  • Bertrand was similarly pinched from Gillingham
  • He's a lad of 15, for god sakes, talk about an overreaction...people calling him a "greedy c*nt" and the like. He's been given the chance to play for the European champions.

Yes it's annoying that Charlton get nothing for it, but I think the anger should be directed at the rules (or lack of) that allow it rather than the boy himself.
  • He could be a chelsea fan for all we know...

    Good luck to the lad

Sorry but I don't understand this at all.
    Pretty simple really

He could be a lifelong chelsea fan and therefore his dream move

Not many players make it, so if there is s chance he may not make it, he may as well get paid more money in the time he has

Secondly, he is more likely to get a club being released from chelsea than he is if he were released by us

Many fans wear rose tinted glasses, just because we love cafc and would stay, that doesnt mean its the right thing for this kid to do,

    Good luck to him
    Totally agree
I think the insults aimed at the kid are bang out of order
What would you advise your son seriously
Agree that the insults are a bit out of order but, honestly, I would advise my kid to play for a club where he will get good development facilities and coaching, who have a track record of youngsters coming through and getting their breaks in the first team, that sell on their successful youngsters for a fair whack and where the fans really appreciate seeing and supporting the home-grown players coming through. I would advise my kid NOT to look short term, go for the easy bucks and the prestige and, in all probability, fall flat on his arse when blocked from first team action by huge squads of very expensive overseas players.

  • Secondly, he is more likely to get a club being released from chelsea than he is if he were released by us

Not happy about it but agree with this statement.

Only a kid, who is to say we would have progressed him to a level where we would have started him anyway? Young lad, will probably never make it any further than a carling cup appearance for them.

Premier League screwing over the lower leagues is no shock horror.
  • So we've got nothing against defoe then?
  • So we've got nothing against defoe then?

About £1.4m - but that was under a different system of compensation.

  • Can we please put this into some perspective - he is a 15yr old lad. I suspect many of us will know more than a few lads who have had their dreams crushed by injury, illness or personal circumstances so if someone is going to lay down a road map with a few financial guarantees then more than a few fathers will take what is after all in the best financial interests of the lad.

Sad he has decided to move to pastures new and disappointed for the coaching staff who had worked with him but lets not go overboard here. No disrespect to the lad but I would rather focus on the lads who do pull on our shirts not one who does not.

  • So you're Tom Taiwo or Michael Woods? You're offered pro contracts, with no doubt decent wages and hefty signing on fees. Then because you have a guaranteed contract, you have a reputation, and the usual know-nothing manager's will sign you on loans until the contracts disappear. Then when the contract runs out, you're offered a pay out and there's another bunch of know nothing managers and well connected agents who get's you a couple of chances.

What happens at Charlton? You leave and if you're lucky sign for Ebbsfleet, if not Bromley. One injury nothing happens. These might be two extremes, but Woods and Taiwo prove average pros get chances when reps are everything. As AFK said Bertrand made it, and was given his chance on loan. He'd made almost a 150 league appearances before his 21'st birthday. You are given every chance at a top club. How long do you get after a leg break in an academy team? 1/2 an extra season, or maybe one if you're lucky.

Whoever is aggressively criticising this young lad is pathetic. I'd rather have Solly, who decided to stay with us after other's came sniffing again but leave off someone, who as anyone has to, trying to make the best decision for himself.
  • Solly started at Arsenal. Not sure if they let him go, for him to come to us. I'd guess so.
  • Did I read on here that Defoe's move was all about his mum wanting him in a bigger club? Not that he's endeared himself to me since

It wasn't compensation. West ham broke the rules, and Peter Varney went to court to get compensation when the league did nothing. It is also widely alleged that West Ham bought Defoe's Mum a house to help make the dal go through

The whole system stinks. Cannot blame the parents, still less the kid, when this sort of stuff is going on.

But Chris Solly was on the books at Arsenal and was then released by them before coming to our friendly confines and the rest has been history. Perhaps once bitten twice shy?

All clubs take on dozens of young players and only a very few make it. I would presume that Kasey Palmer would have had it drummed into him that at Charlton players like Scott Parker, Lee Bowyer and loads of other players were given a chance at a young age and at 15 or 16 he could have ben playing first team football with us inside a season or two. On thr otherhand he gets some money in the bank now if it doesn't work out.

    .
  • When CAFC decide a player isn't going to cut it, do the club keep paying him out of loyalty?
  • Shame we haven't got a category one academy.
  • Shame we haven't got a category one academy.

Are we trying to get one or is the budget needed just too high? Am i right in thinking Palace have one?
  • When his charlton youth team mates are playing for the first team every week in front of a crowd, being seen on tv and written about in the papers and he's kicking his heels in the Chelsea stiffs he might not necessarily think moving to Chelsea was the better option... I may be wrong but it's probably not that good odds for somebody in the Chelsea set up to make through to their first team, or is it ?
  • He plays for England for gods sake there shit anyway

I am really pissed off about this. The playing field is becoming less level as years go by.I would like to know who is advising him,a decision driven by money.

See above, the only notable English players to graduate from Chelsea's academy since 1998 are John Terry, Carlton Cole and Ryan Bertrand.

...and they nicked Bertrand from Gillingham, so says AFKA.

  • If he was my son it would be Chelsea not us.
When or if he is not good enough for Chelsea he can fall a lot further through the leagues. He might have a loan spell to a champ side rather than Welling.
It might be his dream came true to be at Chelsea and at his age I dont think we should be too hard on him, most fail but he probably knows different.
Charlton are not whiter than white

Category one academy must have 18 full time staff and an operational budget of £2.5 million a season. Seems pretty expensive for me
  • awful news for charlton and awful move for him chelsea have an appalling record at bringing through young players as far as im concerned if prefer them and man city not to have youth academys as i see it as a waste since none of them will get anywhere near the 1st team i really hope the lad hasnt moved to chelsea for sure for his and our sake

John Terry is the last player English to come through the youth ranks and become a regular at Chelsea. Speaks volumes for me. The kid IMO has been badly advised. John Bostock at palace is a perfect example of how a move to a bigger club at a young age driven by money can ruin your football career.
  • I have said it before i have had a fair few dealings with chelsea at that age group and a couple of years below and they are full of lies and money

Anyone who goes there needs to be warned that your kid better be the best of the best and dont get an injury that takes time to heal
  • To be honest I think Keston has it right. Young lad with stars in his eyes. Who can really blame him. His football education will now be very different. Not better just different. He was presumably cream at Charlton but just one of the hopefuls at Chelsea. I personally think he's been badly advised and would have done better under Paul Hart but I don't blame the lad for his decision.
  • good move if you just want to end up a rich young man. Bad move if you want to earn good wage and actually play football.
  • A sorry episode but not at all surprising, I'm afraid. I actually emailed a Chelsea mate the day of that FA Youth Cup match to say, partly tongue in cheek, that I hoped any of our boys didn't play too well because they's doubtless Chelsea would nick them. In reality, I expect all these youth games are watched on a regular basis and that they've had their eye on this lad for a while.

Defoe's position was under a different system but it's a similar sentiment. As the Curbs or Peter Varney said at the time, West Ham's then Chief Executive, Terry Brown ( ? ), simply shrugged his shoulders and told them " It's the law of the jungle."

It's a shame that this news broke on Academy day but it makes it all the more important, where people can afford it, to support Valley Gold and the work that Paul Hart and his team are doing. Just look at Harriott's impact over the last few games.
  • I'm not sure that Chelsea can really claim John Terry - he started out at West Ham and then moved across London at 14 or 15. Frank Lampard took the same route...

    We are category two:
Clubs that cannot meet the required budget requirements and staff levels demanded by Category 1, but still have an indoor training facility will most likely fall into this category.
They will spend less time coaching players each week.
Will be allowed to take players from age 4 and sign players from the age of 9.
Will require an estimated budget of £969k
The current 90 minute travel rule will not apply.
