Sorry Billg I must have missed it, but how many Championship goals has he scored since again?

750k is a ridiculous fee, and can only imagine it's heavily loaded in ons.

No one knows if he would have done it at Championship level, but what we do know is that at Div 1 level he is a lethal scorer and he was not given a chance, for reasons we do not know by CP, who persevered with BWP when he went without a goal for something like 3 months.

If only we'd kept him we might have gone up that year as Champions with 101 points. Clearly a huge mistake by Powell.

  • Anyone know why his stay with us was such a flop? I recall Airman suggesting Clarke was foisted on Powell by Jimenez. He had been idle for a while following his spat with Di Canio, and came to us grossly unfit.

There were perpetual rumours about his attitude too as I recall it. He started out unfit but expected to play on reputation, whilst CP was never particularly enthused by the signing in the first place if the stories were true, and was not inclined to cut him much slack. His talent was not the issue, his refusal to apply it probably was. Maybe the whole experience was something of a wake up call.... Maybe.
  • Started a game for us alongside Yann and didn't impress, they didn't look suited to playing with each other.

In the end it came down the fact that we had better strikers that were on form at the time. BWP scored around 20 that season and Yann looked a Championship player in League 1. Last season Haynes' pace caused a lot of problems, Yann had a good season and Fuller was also a better option.

Don't see the issue. You can't play all 4/5 of your strikers regularly. When you do let them go there's always a chance they'll do well, otherwise you wouldn't have signed them in the first place.
  • Good luck to him. Obviously a good player.
  • He's 28. He's played for 13 different clubs in his career. In 8 years at Championship level he scored 31 goals at a rate of 1 in 5. His most prolific seasons have been at Scunthorpe, Chesterfield and Coventry in League One. He has a reputation for being unfit and overweight.

I think if we were signing him we might have a few issues with that record. Fair play to Cov for getting that much money for him, but I'd be amazed if he scored anywhere near as prolifically in the Championship. I don't think we've missed him.
  • Be interesting to see how he does against us tomorrow.

Not had it good at Wolves, think he likes being a big fish in a small pond.
  • NEWS: Malky - "Leon Clarke has suffered a neck/shoulder injury and has been taken to hospital to be assessed."

The Charlton jinx strikes again. Hope he is back fighting fit soon.
  • They let 4 of there Fa cup winning team leave now 5 players have got bad injuries plus sickness, plus the manager and chairman have been up before the FA.

And to cap it all you lose 3-0 to a team that had gone 14 games without winning before Saturday !

Their doomed, i tell you, their doomed.

They still haven't warmed to him by the looks of it; just had a quick look on Twitter to see if there's any news about the guy - and I saw this:

To be fair, I think his stats say a lot - he's generally loaned out for short periods of time and that, combined with the rumours, suggests he isn't always a good influence to have at a club. Even if he was a positive influence though, his actual goalscoring stats are pretty poor - and I'm glad that he's at Wolves/Wigan and not here. I don't see him as a Championship striker, and think League One is his level; that said though, even at Wolves in League One he still managed to have 30 appearances with only 3 goals.

Despite all that, it sounds like his injury could be serious and I wouldn't wish that on anyone. Hopefully it isn't serious though, and he can kick on and settle in at Wigan, what with their (rather ridiculous) injury woes at the moment it could be an ideal time for him to establish himself.

  • I hope he gets well soon, but it's a sign of how far Wigan have declined from their slick passing football, to a much more direct style on their boggy pitch
  • I'm sure he's fine. Watching the clip of him lying on the pitch, he was moving his head around without any problem, so I'd imagine is was precautionary more than anything else.

More likely down to his body not being used to moving faster than walking pace............
  • seen reports it is a suspected spine injury(obviously that could be horrible, not only for his career but his life in general), if anyone finds out anymore please post

As we found out last season, it's hard to play slick passing football on a boggy pitch.

  • Now at Bury..

Another very interesting player. Does not perform at bigger clubs. Likes being a big fish in small pond.
  • Bury will be the 16th league club he has represented .
  • Three year deal . Unusual nowadays .
  • Hope his injury isn't too serious, don't like seeing players, from any team, get hurt.

    Even Joey Barton?

Yes, especially when you look at his nomadic history. He's a decent enough player at L1 level, maybe they're paying him a lower salary, but he signed for them due to the security of a 3 year deal?
  • he was very unimpressive for charlton ..a lower league player

It's the old "tie him in to a three year deal" to get a better price for him when Chelsea come calling as their replacement for Diego Costa.
  • Scores two in the Championship for soon to be 2nd place Sheffield Utd tonight, after getting one at the weekend.

Was obviously not fit when debuted for us then was quickly frozen out. Undoubtedly had talent.

Playing for a proper team with a proper manager. They have more than "come good" they are flying.

If you include loan spells while contracted to us, he's scored 65 in 155 appearances since leaving us, according to Wikipedia at least.

Not bad for a player widely derided as a waste of space by Charlton fans. A lot of amateur football scouts on here being shown up yet again by an ex player.

Who was he supposed to replace in the team, Kermorgant or BWP? As is well known, Powell didn't want him. Fans took their lead from that.

If you look at his career prior to joining us he was a 1/4ish journeyman who'd played for 10 clubs in 9 years. I agree a lot of fans are quick to judgement (myself included sometimes) and sometimes that means writing players off too early. I fear we've done that with 20 year old (turned 20 last week) KAG and I can already start to see it seeping in with 21 year old Fosu. But at the time there wasn't anything to indicate that Clarke was particularly special.

Also worth noting just how lucky with injuries we were that year. Yann and BWP must have played around 40 games each. apart from Dale Stephens, I can't remember anyone having a sustained period on the sideline.
