Benno's Column (oo-er)

Comments

  • We need statto here. What exactly are Bensons goals per game stats ? and how does that compete with BWP who we know is a good goalscorer.
  • This season Benson has 10 goals from 27 league starts, plus 3 Cup games. There were a further four appearances as a sub.

BWP has 21 goals from 19 games at Charlton (8 goals for us) and 13 goals from 17 games at Plymouth.

  • FOR US ONLY THIS SEASON:

    League: 27 starts, 4 substitute appearances - 10 goals, 2 assists

FA Cup: 3 starts, 1 substitute appearance - 0 goals

    JPT: 1 start, 2 substitute appearances - 0 goals

3 yellow cards (1 League, 2 FA Cup), 2 red cards (both League)
  • Thanks chaps
  • TBF that's not too bad - 1 in 3ish in the league BUT at the same time if you're a striker that only scores every third week or so you have to make your contribution in assists as well. 2 in 31 games tells it's own story.

As it happens I think he does has something to offer and hope that his improved form continues but, as others have said, if he's to be the first choice partner for BWP come August I think we could be in for an underwhleming summer of signings.

  • I agree with OohAah and others who say Benson is a good honest pro.

    That's
one of the attributes we need in a Charlton player, because in recent
times we've had far too many "I'm only here for the money" mercenaries,
who punch their time out doing the minimum possible they can get away
    with.

So he has the right attitude.

Secondly, he has a pretty decent conversion rate from the chances he has actually had.
    His
previous manager said at the time we signed Benno, " Get the ball into
the box early, and Benson will get you 20 goals a season".

    Well,
the team are not actually very good at getting the ball into the box
early (Francis perhaps is the best we've got at doing that?), so all
things considered Benson has done pretty well feeding off scraps and the
    occasional decent cross.

With better service, both he and BWP would surely have each scored more?
  • If we could get someone like Danny Green on the right, he would certainly provide plenty of crosses into the box. Whether we have Benno or another target man type forward up top with BWP, think they would be benefit from someone like Green. Hoping Jackson will be fit and available for us on the left come August.

Also if Daggers go down on Sat, which I think they will (tough game away at Peterborough), Green will not want to drop back into League 2.

  • Agree, Dan. Whoever we play up front, we must give them the service in the box.
Presently, we don't have penetration wide often enough, and consequently rarely get crosses into the box.

Benno, BWP or indeed any striker, needs the right service to play to their strengths.
  • Benno has done well to force his way back into Powell's side. He seems to of created a good partnership with BWP. Personally I think next season he will do really well after having this season to settle in.

  • FA qualified? That's hilarious!

So you can set a few cones out, give out bibs and put a plaster on a 8 year olds knee and that means you are allowed to slag off professional footballers ability and make unfunny personal remarks.

  • Enjoy Cyprus Benno.  While most fans flop around in excrement in grey, wind-swept, credit crunched Britain trying to gather together enough small coins to loyally follow their heroes over the next season.

If you had any regard for the supporters you'd take Jess and Ruby to a damp cave in Lincolnshire to huddle under a plastic bag for a week eating mud and spiders and pondering what you've done to loyal supporters .  Think about the poor pensioner that will probably go without heating this winter to pay your wages, Paul, while you live it up on  fish and other fancy stuff in exotic Cyprus.

  • @McLovin - "while you live it up on  fish and other fancy stuff"

And i bet the no-good charleton asks for it to be filleted as well. grrrr

  • he was taking the piss Kap10!!
  • Reel him in!
  • I might dust the  Roller off and take a trip to the take away to get some fancy stuff and chips tonight

    @ Chirpy Red

Sorry that my FA badge and semi-pro coaching experience (with senior level mens teams by the way, not eight-year olds) doesn't impress you.

I take it you never criticise the Government for example, never having been an MP yourself?

Take my comments as a one-off coaching session for Benson.  If he puts the things right that I have identified (and which no-one has found issue with yet), he'll be a much better player.  And I for one will be delighted.

  • You missed my point David.

Why mention your FA badge at all? You may may have a  FIFA XXX license with bells on for all I know. Even one of those makes you no more qualified to comment on anyone.

However you can say what you like, I really don't mind, but trying to justify what you say because you've done a workshop or two just comes over very arrogant and we've enough of those on here already.

  • If anything was wrong with Benno I would say it's that he hasn't got a coat with his name on the back!
  • @ chirpy  red

    1) He didn't bring up his FA badge, someone else did

    2) Not sure why you make a fuss over "unfunny personal remarks", look at your "Easy to when you're perfect I guess" post for one of those

    3) Isn't the point of forums like these to post thoughts and opinions about Charlton?  You don't need to be qualified to see Benson has those limitations mentioned, plus more, so to say Dave has no right to comment on anyone is absolute garbage!

  • @Curb it

As was I in my post which seems to have been lost on some!

  • @ Chirpy Red

As has been pointed out, it was WSS who mentioned my qualification.  Do you prefer that I deny it?

It's curious that someone like yourself (who presumably doesn't have the same qualifications and experience) is so dismissive of it.  Do you really believe that taking and passing the FA course and then supplementing it with several years of practical experience doesn't make someone better qualified to comment on a player than the average fan might?

    Now that is hilarious.

  • What has this got to do with fish?
  • @eldavide Let David speak for himself or are you two one and the same? <rubs chin>

@David - No. Now go and laugh your socks off.

  • @ Chirpy Red

    *types with eyes streaming*

So, now enlighten me.  What would it take, in your view, to allow someone to criticise a professional player?

    Are you Robbie Savage?

  • I think this was a fairly good thread with a mix of views and opinions that has now descended into a shambles. Shame.
  • @David.

Please read my posts David if you want to continue talking to me.

I said you can say what you like. Just don't add stuff that you think makes you more qualified than anyone else. Ok, I didn't see WSS comment but then again you didn't have to mention it too.

Am I Robbie Savage? No, I'm Steve Claridge!

  • Not a perfect analogy but I would say being a qualified medical practitioner makes your opinion on medical matters more credible than a non medical qualified person. Extraordinarily arrogant to suggest otherwise I would suggest.
