Why Chris simply CAN'T fail.

edited January 2011 in General Charlton
I know we probably don't need another Chris Powell thread, but I need to say this.
Chris Powell can't fail.
The reason is shown in the outpourings of joy shown elsewhere - ie, the positivity engulfing the club.
The way I see it, there's a distinct chance we wouldn't get promoted whether managed by Parky, Howe, Poyet or anyone else. The difference is, if Chrissy fails to take us up this year, we'll be content that he'll give it another go next year. Christ, people were even saying that about some of the other potential managers!
Chrissy Powell is SO loved at this club that the atmosphere at home games will transform overnight. The effect of a supportive crowd on the team will only be positive.

And now, and for me this is the most important thing, I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEXT HOME GAME! I haven't looked forward to watching Charlton for an awfully long time. I've seriously considered giving up my season ticket for the last four or five years (yes, since before Curbs left) but now I can't wait.

I love Chris Powell. I know most of us do.
It doesn't matter whether we go up this year - We always will love him.

THAT'S why he can't fail.

Comments

  • If only real life was like that......
  • Thing is - I get all the Chris Powell euphoria but a couple of things

    1) Do we really want a sentimental appointment
    2) Experience - he is a coach at Leicester not a manager or a number 2
    3) He will relate to the fans but will he relate to players that have arrived after him

I think its a massive gamble
  • In fact i think its highly possible any manager in the betting could fail - Curbs was unique and set high standards !

There's no one available that stands out - we certainly don't want a manager with baggage which is why imho EH was the right man

Even the managers that were not available were a gamble. Poyet certainly would not have guaranteed success- although would have loved him at The Valley whilst there were many questions about Eddie Howe stepping out of his comfort zone. In the last year we have seen the likes of Darren Ferguson, Alan Irvine and even Woy struggle to maintain their good reputations.

Very pleased with Powell and despite his lack of experience at management level, he ticks more boxes than many of the names spouted around.

How much would a manager like O'Neill cost per year ? I know its a pipe dream but honestly would it be feasable to plough any available transfer funds into the management of the club rather than the players cos i think we have good enough players - just need a man to motivate and coach them properly !
  • On the contrary, he is the one person who CAN fail and it won't matter! He won't be blamed and the board won't be blamed. As people have said on other threads I now don't see promotion this season as imperative. And I hope the board and the fans make that clear to him. I have reservations but I would absolutely love for him to succeed and I want him to be given a reasonable chance.
  • have to agree choice, it's a massive gamble.

I know we had sucess with lennie and curbs in their first jobs but they both had a ruthless streak and i'm not sure chris has got that in his nature.
  • Chris is ( if it's true) a bad choice. This is no time to appoint a novice manager, no time to experiment, a new man must hit the ground running and there is certainly no time to waste in getting the playing side of things right. There are no players left from Chris's playing days and only a few on the admin/coaching staff. I hope that I am VERY wrong but i forsee a love affair between CHRIS AND THE FANS ending badly.

A Gary Johnson or a John Still is what is needed, that is an experienced man who knows the lower divisions and is an experienced man manager with a lot of tactical nous. Sorry, Chris Powell is not yet that manager.

    Jon Fortune is around.

I think you underestimate the man.

Chris comes across as a nice guy, but that's just the way he conducts himself - dignity with a touch of humour.
But underneath that he is a strong character.

And there are several stories around telling he can be inspirational to others.

He's been a manager waiting to happen. Lacking managerial experience?
Certainly, but over the years he's been around enough managers, good and bad, to have learned in his head the traits he'll use to his advantage.

Otherwise it's just down to getting games under his belt and ensuring his assistant and 1st teamcoach provide the right support and balance.

Charlton supporters are no less indebted to Richard Murray or appreciative to him for all of his efforts for the club despite often questionable judgement in his latter years in charge.

Same as kinsella in my mind. Sadness is the only slightly negative feeling i have thinking about those two in that it didnt perhaps work out in the Hollywood style they merited. I have nothing other than respect and admiration and other positive views for them based on their intentions throughout and actions in the long term.

I would say the same for Powell.

If mendonca had come back for a swansong for half a season and not netted once it still wouldnt have tarnished his achievment and status in Charlton history in my eyes.

Better to have loved and lost and all that.

  • Assuming that Eddie Howe was offered the job, but turned it down and that Chris Powell has been offered the job then it suggests to me that the new owners are looking for someone who doesn't necesarily have that much managerial experience but has excellent coaching credentials and will grow with the club and be a mid-long term appointment. I'm sure they'd liked to have given the job to Poyet, Hughton and maybe one or two other names but the chances are that they would have wanted too much money up-front and might not be around in a couple of years when a Prem team comes calling. I see Murray's fingerprints on this - he had a great working relationship with Curbs, just as Varney did and using that as the template they've gone for a slightly unexpected choice, but one that will be popular with the fans. There can be no better club for Chris Powell to cut his managerial teeth at and no better time to join - we have half the season to go, we're in the play-off spots at least and it seems there's some money to invest in new players, with Nathan Eccleston arriving today.

No - I was gonna make some really paranoid comments about backroom control over an inexperienced management. And although he is inexperienced, at the end of the day Pardew, Dowie, experience, high profile, presumably strong characters who know what they want, and what di they achieve?...zilch and more zilch. CP is fresh from the field and should be able to tell it like it is to the team. Really hope so.
  • Chris Powell WILL get more passion and consistency out of the team than Phil Parkinson did, he is a man who every player out there, he comes into contact with, respects immeasurably. He was made PFA chairman for a reason you know.

I have no doubts about this and most importantly neither did the board, which includes Varney and Murray.

Do people just think he has fluked getting into this position. No, no, no, he deserves it and he has earn't that chance.

    In Chris we trust!
  • What a let down the players will be if they continue to maintain their poor form especially when they hear the applause and adulation from the fans for Chris. Surely, this will be enough for them to give everything they have for their new manager. I really do believe he will get the best out of them but expect it may take some time. The new owners have brought a breath of fresh of air to this club and I for one commend them for that.

Chris Powell last played for us in May 2008, so...

    Jon Fortune
    Rob Elliot
    Chris Solly
    Scott Wagstaff
    Jose Semedo
    Therry Racon

    Damian Mathhew
    The Kitman

I'm sure we could go on....

(You never know, he might even be able to get Kelly Youga playing again...!)
  • Reading the FoxesTalk forum ...... Leicester fans totally worship Powell, and so does everybody within that club.

He's been there, what ....... 3 years? All they can say about him is "Legend", and "Gutted he's leaving"., and "Wish him all the best, he's joining the perfect club for him".

And laugh about his 100% record as Leicester manager! ;o)

According to the Leicester forum, somebody read a Tweet from the Charlton kitman to Powelly, calling him '"Grandad".

    :o)

Think that was his nickname at Charlton. Matt Holland said on Twitter that "he has the body of a 20 year old and the face of a 60 year old"
    Harsh ;-)
