Well Oggy, as the majority of Irish are now English speaking and for some reason have been for some time :-) I would expect that to be the case, although, 'The Republic' is also fairly widely used in everyday language.
However if you were to discuss the issue with the few pockets of Gaelic speaking folk, you might get a different answer, much the same I suspect as with Wales and Cymru.
Most of my customers are of course in Dublin, Cork or Galway and warm friendly people they are too.
I've worked with most of them for around 5 years now, so got to know some of them quite well.
Eamon is actually a real person and a close friend who lives near Galway, a twinkle in his eye and sparkling sense of humour - and that's the sort of answer he would typically give me if I asked (although I might have to bribe him first with a double Paddy's).
Nobody calls it eire. It's on the coins though... It's the noun form of Ireland. Much more common is Eireann, which is used in other cases such as "in" Ireland and the people "of Ireland" etc. And in the National Anthem, "Sine Fianna Fail, ata faoi gael ag Eireann".
Eire is nice, short and looks well on all the stamps and coins but as spiced said, you'll rarely hear it used within the country. Anyone into their Paddy's is a madman, that stuff is a nightmare.
You forgot to mention the stamps and the official seal of the president Spiced! :-)
'Nobody' would certainly be stretching the truth somewhat but I doubt everyone wants to see a protracted discusion about the areas of Ireland that although small, still hold Gaelic as it's native tongue.
It seemed in the 70s and 80s that the ROI was often referred to as Eire in the UK press and in particular the football team was so called in magazines, programmes and yearbooks etc.
Then that seemed to stop in the UK and ROI became the commonly used term.
Didn't know it was Gallic so I've learnt something new.

Nordies!
Anyway, back to the original post>: I had a look through the top two leagues and realistically Rob "Eire" Eliot would only really have to get past Paddy "Benilyn" Kenny and Kieran Westwood if Shay were to retire.
To get to England no.1 you MUST be playin in the premiership.
On top of that Ireland have only really had three first choice goalies since about 1988. Bonner, Kelly and Given.
Where as the last time England had a solid number one was Seaman.
So I'm not saying that he won't be England goalie in the future but rather that it's more likely that he'd get a game for ROI.
Kenny won't play for Ireland again as he is banned for a while to come and has not been in a squad for a number of years, he did say he wanted to be overlooked by Staunton and Trapottoni a while ago but I believe he changed his mind. Think if Elliot is playing in Championship he will be ahead of Belly Kenny

Wasn't Joe Lewis in the squad when he was in the fourth tier, and sat on the subs bench if my memory serves me right.
Personally if Elliot does make it as an international goalie I'd rather it be for Eire. England just fucks around with you, and you then get idiots like Keown and poor journos in the red tops saying you're not up it a la Robert Green; who has been outstanding, consistent and better than most of the top six sides' goalies.
not on tonight's performance he won't. At fault for the third and just as responsible as Llera for the first. Not knocking him though as he's been great so far this season so just a blip tonight. Needs to learn from it though.
with my charlton specs on i have to say that he has the potential to be the best keeper in the world and i never see him make any mistakes.but in the real world.....

Joe Lewis was playing for Peterborough in the third tier, but to be fair the matches that he sat on the bench for were end of season internationals vs Trinidad and the usual suspects had been given that tour off.
Ellliots distribution is top class, his shot stopped is pretty good to, but he needs to stop coming way out of his goal for crosses. I know on occasions he comes and gets a good fist on it but there's been a few times this season where he comes and flaps at it, he didn't need to be where he was for their 3rd goal
He has not even reached 50 games for the club but looks like he has the potential to be number 1 for years. He is only going to get better and certainly an international call up (for Ireland not England) is not beyond all possibilties. Weaver made many mistakes last year and did not make as many top class saves as Elliot has this season (could you see Weaver saving the Carl Cort header) so I think he can be excused a couple of flaps as long as they don't start leading to goals regularly.

Our defence hasn't quite managed the total shut-out of opposition chances just yet.
Depends on who and where you ask Henry!!
And without exception they all refer to Ireland as Ireland, and not Eire.
Perhaps I'll ask a couple of them tomorrow.
Example: "Eamon, should I refer to Ireland as Ireland, or Eire.....?
"Hi ya, Rob........in Eireland, the Eirish always call it Eireland. Tanks a millyon for asking!"
See what I mean?
;o)
