Don't know much about the Royd Meister! Anyone here comment on his personality, style of play, success in the transfer market. I know he got Watford up, but they went back down in a flash.
Believe it or not, I remember him talking about a two year plan - must have been when they came back down, I guess.
I think there is some dispute, isn't there, about whether Pardew ever actually uttered that infamous phrase ? ...well, I can tell you Aidy really did say it!
Bothroyd worked brilliantly to get a Watford team looking at relegation to promotion.
Wasn't helped that he had to sell King halfway through the season last year, like we did with Reid. Not sure who they got in the summer transfer wise but they seem to have worse finances than us, they had to close one stand.
I wrote this about him when he was first mentioned and people were saying he was rubbish...
"The guy is a victim of his own success, The football he played when he got Watford promoted was not the long ball hoof he became known for in the Premier League. He played a slick passing game with two geniune wide players in Young and Bouazza and two strikers Henderson and King who were scoring for fun... They went up too early and were hoplessly under prepared for the premiership, it was after all mostly the same side that finished in the bottom half of the division the previous season. When they went up he decided (much like Curbs did when we went up) that playing so open would be suicide so played a direct style upto King and henderson hoping they could play off the scraps (as Stoke are doing this season) he still managed to get to an FA Cup Semi final despite King being injured for the entire season (how would we have coped with out Benty?).
Since they came down he got the play offs last season on a much smaller budget than we did, despite there being a firesale and spending exactly £0 on transfers over the summer they're still above us in the league and listening to my own mates and the SSN voxpops, the games were entertaining, and in many cases they were unlucky to go down to the odd goal. Given that they don't have any decent defenders at least the problem is obvious and can be rectified (with money) i'd take over us having loads of defenders that Pardew can't get the best out of...
The only thing Boothroyd could be questioned over is his record in the transfer market (but you could level that at Pardew). Not Saying we should get him, but he's a better manager than we've got and perhaps not the long ball merchant he's made out to be"
[cite]Posted By: CHG[/cite]Looks to be named as Coventry City manager this afternoon.
Started to read this thread from the begining totally confused. Poor old Kevin Lisbie another manager. After all those years with Curbs he has now had Dowie, Reed, Pardew, Ipswich manager before Keane, keane, lambert and Boothroyd. Wonder what deal Boothroyd was one, Colchester will be cheesed at losing a manager so soon
Personally don't like him, he is like many managers had instant success and has lived off that for a while. Plays horrible long ball football shown by Colchester this season who played at The Valley like a lower league worse version of Stoke. Would not want him at The Valley.

Neither would I. Hopefully it will weaken Colchester and that will be one less team to worry about next season.

With benefit of hindsight Bothroyd really hasn't done anything since leaving Watford.
Sorry to bring this up but was speaking to an ex player the other day (youth player/reserve) and he said that the squad was sat down and told that Boothroyd was taking over the next day but then they never heard anything more after that and Parky was given a contract to become permanent manager.

Met him and Pardew on the same evening a few years ago. Aidy was a really pleasant chap, happy to talk to a football fan and swap stories. Pardew wasn't.
I can't help but think that without Ashley young Watford would never have been promoted. Their performance the following season was poor. The only think Boothroyd has ever achieved was that promotion. If he'd not had young that season I suspect none of us would even know who the bloke is. His achievements since then have been non existent.
I've got nothing against the bloke, personally, but I really hope his agent enabled him to earn enough to retire on the back of that eighteen months with Watford, as there's no evidence to suggest that he'll be doing much else in his career.
To be fair he has done a decent job with Northampton taking them from relegation candidates to the play off final. Style of football is still pretty ugly but at that level is also pretty effective.

Marlon King was the key - he could control the ball up well and score goals but he got injured in about October of the Premier league season and we were stuffed.
Also Darius Henderson was out of his depth - couldn't get away with bashing everyone in the top flight.
Ben Foster was our best Premier league player - and well he is the only one still in it now Aidy Mariappa went down with Reading apart from Young himself.
Mind you and no offence to your current manager as he was a fine player and good bloke signing Chris Powell and Matt Jackson on a good wage at their age hardly was the ideal move.

They are a decent sized League 2 club though, their aim was always up but he's done alright

Would suit our style of play at the moment surely, "Booooof, on yer ed Deon"
