I've still got one of GHE teeshirts from after that game the lion with crutches and neck brace.. priceless, in my collection with the donor card tee and the I saw leaburn score a hatrick.. memories..
What a night. After all the years of suffering against them, to finally beat them there (I was there for the Anglo Itallian but hardly the same) and totally play them off the park was very special. The home win in March wasn't bad either.
I still have my shirt that GHE produced - always brings a smile to my face.
Bloody cold that night but the result warmed us all up.Big Terry of the Met gave me his leather gloves that night. My friend took over 6hours to drive back to Crawley via the M25 and God danced on snow(morts)that is.
Was living in Bermondsey at the time. Only had a few drinks but was deliriously happy after and sang Valley Floyd Road all the way home down Ilderton Road past the station etc.
Surprised I didnt get a slap, but not one spanner said boo to me and my mates!

Glad you recollect it in the same way in the 2 years that have passed!
This was a classic game and one of my favourites of all time.
I'd just left school after one year of (failed) A levels and was supposed to be looking for a job. Actually all I was doing was playing Championship Manager with my mate Pikey...a M*llwall fan!
Great memories of the night. Drinking cider in the Oast House at London Bridge station pre match, the orange ball, Grant's goals, Mortimer's amazing performance, the "where's yer rhino gone" song when Stevens went for an early bath, Phil Chapple hobbling back onto the pitch on crutches to salute the travelling fans at the final whistle and best of all...bragging rights over my best mate!
Me and my old man were on such a high when we got back to Three Bridges that we didn't mind walking home in the blizzard. He always says that we didn't leave any footprints on the way back as we floated home!
Was a big morts fan, funnily enough and this is why I chose my screen name. A lot of my mates where split in whether to like Mortimer or not (due to his inconsistency). But add it all up and you could make a great DVD of the man. Some of the greatest goals and skills you will ever see in a Charlton Shirt! 17 years is a long wait to beat your rivals and they didnt like it!
just seen this and i agree with your greatest away game ever fact quote god i loved every min of that game even dodging rock filled snow balls on the way home and loosing my exhaust on me astra on the way there
Great game - remember it being announced thru it that the A2 was closed due to ice and snow. Worried about getting home, I was parked up about half a mile from the ground. Thought for a little while about going to avoid the weather but then thought f... it I'm here and upfor it.
Stayed, lost my voice then got absolutely plastered at my mates house in Eltham.
I love Kim Grant just for this game - the one time he had the right studs in!!
Makes all the crap worthwhile when you have games like this.
Cheers FOD. One of the most memorable games/days I have ever had. Worked in the City and took half day from work and had lunch with a girl friend at 12.30. Then went and met workmates for more lunch at 1.30(ish) and then over London Bridge to The Market Porter for about 3pm to meet GuinnessAddick amongst others for more lunch!
Don't think I have ever been so drunk for a game, but remember it clearly (think the cold helped). Got stopped from falling through the seats after the first goal (although mate did rip my new shirt while trying to keep me upright) and went arse over tit down the stairs at one stage when going to the loo. Tried to play it cool as I ended up on my backside on the steps and a steward told me I couldn't sit there!!
Don't remember much afterwards though!! Happy days ;-))
Just finished watching the playback again! I have no nails left! Singing and shouting at the pc screen! The commentator saying about 3 wins in 74 games at the Den, what a record and probably another 17 years for it to happen again, so next season its our turn again for sure? The second double over them in our lifetime, maybe? What a record
One of the greatest night of my life, those last 20 minutes were agony, I was sure the Scum were going to come back just like they had in 1989 at The Den to draw 2-2.
We had a quality team that year, was really only the fact we had such a small squad that stopped us from going up, by the end of March we were knackered and even Bowyer - what a player he was - had lost his edge.
its 4 now, because of the above result and that was our first ever double over them. That's why I went mental at the time when we won and we have never doubled since! Super record, I don't think anyone can match that against their local rivals, do you? Check the books, it's not a good read.

Happy times indeed!

That is not just a shocking stat, it's actually abnormal.
