Africa Cup of Nations - Togo

Not sure if its been commented elsewhere. Today is the last day of the African Cup of nations and you will recall the tournament began by the Togo team being attacked resulting in players being wounded and other members of the team being killed along with the coach driver. Togo withdrew from the tournament.

Today, or was it yesterday, Togo were banned from the African Cup of nations fortwo years. I presume that FIFA are complicit in this, personally I think it stinks.

FIFA has of yet refused to comment.

As I stated on the other thread, I find the decision appalling, deplorable but perhaps most disappointingly, predictable.

CAF and all its involvement including the World Cup should be suspended indefinitely until they retract this sick decision and apologise to the Togolese FA and Government. And the bloke that gave the "told you so" interview should be escorted out of the building as it were.

So what are the authorities trying to prove exactly? That football really is more important than life and death? Thought even Shankly said that tongue in cheek. Appalling.

Agree with all the above. Self important blazers with no touch on reality, and no humanity. Idiots of the first order.

Think i read a quote somewhere from the AFC that it was the government of Togo that refused to allow their players to return, the players themselves wanted to play.

Decision is still a joke tho.

As Gary alluded to, there is more to it than meets the eye:

It's a strange one ..... because CaF has actually encouraged Togo to appeal ......(!)

Just read both articles and I can't see how there is more to it than meets the eye at all.

It sounds like a stupid, heartless decision made by wankers, and it is a stupid, heartless decision made by wankers.

Cant imagine him not sticking his oar in if something similar happened to the French, Argentine or England team in South Africa...then again i dont suppose Togo give a lot financially to the game and i doubt very much he gives a shit about the people there.
