London Restaurants

We are coming to London for a matinee performance of the Only Fools & Horses musical so will be in the Theatre Royal, Haymarket area for the evening, can anyone recommend a decent restaurant in the vicinity? I am well out of touch, must be 25 years since I've had a night out in London so would welcome any ideas where we could get a decent steak or anything else other than a curry! Ta

  • Zedel’s
  • Margot and Leicester Square Kitchen are both amazing if a tad pricey
  • Hawksmoor air street.
  • Rowleys on Jermyn Street is great for a steak

Thought this was was a wonderful place when I went.
  • Haha, @Addickforlife is correct.
  • Hawksmoor air street.
    Certainly second Hawksmoor
  • Caprini’s in Waterloo Road and a cab to the west end.
The steaks are superb and the house red is excellent.

    Zedel’s
Second this. The main place I eat in central London, always good food and excellent service.

  • Zedels is great.

Duck and waffle local is nearby too for tasty pre theatre food.

    Hawksmoor pre theatre menu disappointing.

Cant go wrong with a busaba imo.
  • Many thanks for the recommendations so far, some decent shouts
  • You’ll absolutely love the show, it’s brilliant.

we went to Thai Square about 3 mins walk away before seeing it, just down the bottom of Haymarket...couldn’t fault it
  • Heliot Steakhouse in the Hippodrome Casino, Leicester Square. Amazing in every way.
  • Weirdly was about to start a similar thread, as I'm looking for somewhere central (watching the Lion King matinee) that would be good with two young kids but also nice for adults too rather than just McDonalds etc
  • I work in Kingly St and think that Zedels is disappointing. They look to get you out within an hour and food is average. Hawksmoor; overpriced, alright for expense account for a serious lunch. I like the more relaxed places like Kricket in Denman St (Indian). Bocca Di Lupa (Italian) in Archer St is my current favourite. All the places in Kingly Court are great for atmosphere
  • I’m going to add Nopi in Warwick St to the v impressive list. Soho House always delivers too but service can be pretentious. Need membership as well
  • Rowleys on Jermyn Street is great for a steak
Sometimes on Groupon if you want to save a few bob. Keep meaning to go whenever I'm in London but always seem to fail, including the current trip which ends on Tuesday.

    Frankie & Benny's ?

  • Want to avoid the chains if possible, just be nice to go somewhere a bit different than the normal 'been to the cinema and can't be arsed to cook now' restaurants.

Over that way, joe Allen’s or sarastro?
  • Valley cafe.. Sausage, bacon chips two slice and a cuppa £5.40

Being in Covent garden the list is endless. Flat iron on Henrietta street might be worth  a visit for a quick no fuss meal. Reasonably priced and pretty decent grub.
  • Also a favourite of mine being the ivy market grill.

    Maxwells, Covent Garden.
  • Dean Street Townhouse. Superb food, great atmosphere. Nothing mentioned comes close.
  • Cheers all, some good suggestions!

Loved that place back in the day!
