From my parents influence, 60s Motown, buddy holly, del Shannon. when I first had money to buy my own records I was (and still am) into 80 soul/funk stuff. Evelyn champagne king, kashif, sos band etc.
The Church The Teardrop Explodes The Triffids Bowie Husker Du Orange Juice Motown early 80s soul - bit of a catch all, but the sort of stuff I'd hear when I was out but would always go home and listen to John Peel and I now find I don't listen to the "difficult" Peel stuff but do listen to Oddysey, Chic, Shalamar etc. The 17 year old me would have expected it to be the other way round. The 53 year old me is happy that it's turned out this way and really doesn't want to revisit Theatre of Hate.
Before I went to my first rave in '94. To this day today, my preferred music is still Tech-house, techno and minimal, although I don't mind a bit of rock now and again
