Cover to Cover: Tears of a Clown

In light of the sad death of Ranking Roger two versions of this classic.

Do you prefer the Smokey Robinson and the Miracles original or the Beat cover.

No other versions considered.

  • No Contest . The Beat !
  • No Contest . The Beat !
You may prefer it but certainly can't say no contest. That's Smokey
  • Sorry, as a soul purist, it's Smokey Robinson & The Miracles for me. Originally an album-only track, would you believe.
  • Smokey....no contest.

As Martin Fry sang - It's Smokey's Tears!
  • No Contest . The Beat !
Says the man who also said that Sean Connery was the worst Bond!
  • Smokey. And I suspect The Beat would agree. Nothing wrong with their version though!

My least favourite bond . Worst is subjective
  • Decent enough cover version, but the Smokey original is an all time classic

  • Both fantastic in their own way........but when Smokey Sings.....'it beats every-thing'! (as the song goes)
  • No Contest . The Beat !

FFS.....he is ‘THE’ James Bond......all those who came after were mere pretenders, as admirable as they were/are.

  • Smokey. Loved the Beat but Smokey's version is an absolute classic.
  • Smokey
  • Smokey by a long way ......

Tracks of my tears has a lot of good covers
  • Got to be smokey, though I like both. This live version is quality, and I never knew that Romesh Ranganathan was one of the miracles

  • No Contest . The Beat !
PM me your address & I'll send you some cotton buds to clean your ears out.

Appreciate that not everyone likes Motown (Although this actually came out on the Tamla label in the States) but really, no one could better the Smokey version.

  • Smokey, sorry Ranking Roger.
  • Smokey, by a mile.

BTW, do those Google links work for anyone? They just take me to a blank page.

Yes miming sadly like 100s of other clips from the 60s/70s
  • Sacrilegious to suggest any other than the great Smokey Robinson.

  • I cant stand either version!, Im scared of clowns.
  • Love both. Which I prefer depends on time/place. Love the energy of The Beat's version and the attitude; Smokey's voice and the tremendous bass line just edge it for me at the moment.
  • Smokey for me , good version by The Beat though.
