Selling players

Can someone answer me a question?
In the 5 years of Duchataway's tenure, have we sold a major first team player every season and replaced them with youth team prospects/loans/frees/no one at all every year?

    Pretty much.
  • Diego Poyet was replaced with Franck Moussa (Free)

I would say Yoni was the replacement for Poyet, then Kashi his.
  • I don't think I'll ever get over Yann being replaced by Polish Pete.

Could also add Alnwick being replaced by Thuram. That's on par.

Very true... I didnt think to look at the incoming loans for that summer
  • I'd say the major players we've sold / replaced with are as follows

I've not included the summer after we were relegated from the Championship

    2018/19
Josh Magennis was replaced with Lyle Taylor (Free)
Ezri Konsa was replaced with Krystian Bielik (Loan)
Ahmed Kashi was replaced with Josh Cullen (Loan)

    2017/18
Ricky Holmes was replaced with Kaikai and Mavididi (Loan)
Lee Novak was replaced (eventually) with Leon Best (Free)

    2016/17
Ademola Lookman was replaced with Mavididi (Loan)
Morgan Fox was replaced by Dasilva (loan) | Page (Undisclosed)

    2015/16
Joe Gomez was replaced with Patrick Bauer (Undisclosed)

    2014/15
Michael Morrison was already replaced by Andre Bikey and Tal Ben-Haim (Free)
Diego Poyet was replaced with Franck Moussa (Free)

    2013/14
Yann Kermorgant was replaced with Polish Pete (Undisclosed)
Dale Stephens was replaced with Astrit Ajdarevic (Loan)

    Thanks for that.
Now I can't remember the deal that Taylor is on, but if I had to speculate that if Duchataway still owns this club as his contract runs down he won't be offered a longer/improved deal but will be offered a short same/less money deal which he would refuse therefore the owner would move him on. So the cycle goes on.....
  • Fairly sure Morrison was replaced with Oguchi Onyewu FA

True but Morrison was effectively replaced when Bikey and Ben Haim came into the side which is why I chose them

They forced him out of the first XI, but Bikey & Ben Haim replaced Wood & Dervite in the summer.

Morrison was 3rd choice (Gomez 4th) and Onyewu was drafted in when Morrison was binned off.

Good point... Plus Onyewu for Morrison looks better on this thread as shows again how awful our transfer policy has been

  • Selling players and bringing young players through/ loan deals has been happening for decades at Charlton.

As such I can understand the maths behind doing it, although at the time of some sales it does make me sick.

However the Rolly experience is far worse, no planning whatsoever takes place. For example If we were going to let Grant go we should have made sure we have the right cover in place before even allowing him to talk to people. However because we don't tie players up on contracts this makes it impossible.

The people running our club day to day (who are they?) haven't got a clue and Rolly just don't care.

The really stupid thing is that by strengthening the squad slightly would very much give us a better shot at promotion, which would help the sale and maybe even get the Belgian a better price.

So to sum it up under Rolly we are fucked.

Josh Magennis was replaced with Lyle Taylor (Free)

Ahmed Kashi was replaced with Josh Cullen (Loan

the only season where all the replacements have been an improvement !

Testament to Bowyer's signings this season. But notably RD has made money on both Konsa and Mag but has spent 0 on the replacements.
  • Well we'll wait and see next season... they were improvements this time round but being loanees there is no guarantee they'll be as good next time - Its the irritating thing for Bowyer in the sense that he cant build a squad that is together a bit more long term (Okay there will nearly always be a sale or two) and so improve better, instead every summer its straight back to square one

To be fair there have been upgrades as well, e.g.
    2014/15
Danny Green replaced by Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson
Marvin Sordell replaced by Igor Vetekele
    2015/16
Naby Sarr also came in . Hopeless then but now a decent player
    2016/17
Reza, Pigott and Tucudean replaced by Ajose, Magennis and Novak (the first 2 for fees)

Harsh, as that underplays the job Gallen is doing with Bowyer. Taylor might have been free, but I bet he got a nice signing on fee

And if anything Kashi's replacement was Pratley, Cullen came in to cover for JFC

we only got them signing because they were loans/free roland would not have paid for them, that is the point i made about luck!

How is getting in the likes of Taylor, Cullen, Bielik, Williams etc luck?

Being able to get quality players on loan or frees is an essential part of managing a 3rd division club. I doubt Pompey or Luton have splashed much money on transfer fees
