If Burton Albion Beat Man City Over 2 Legs...

Burton Albion, due to play the first leg of their Carrier Bag cup semi final tonight, if they were to beat Man City over 2 legs, would this be the biggest cup shock of all time in British football?

Yes - but it’s not happening . I’d say there will be 7 or 8 goals in Man City’s favour over two legs.

    Not gonna happen.

Tier 3 beating Tier 1 isn't that unusual. Over two legs makes it harder but "biggest cup shock off all time" is a big claim.

QPR beating Arsenal in the League cup final in 1967

A third division side beat three division sides in a row in the FA Cup in 1922/23

For the record Wimbledon beating Liverpool in the FA Cup was NOT a cup shock. Wimbledon finished 7th in the top flight that year and had beated Liverpool at Plough Lane the year before in the league.

In a one off game , i can understand it not being such a shock if City lose , but over two legs, and with the money spent and squad assembled , they should in theory wipe the floor with Burton Albion over 2 legs , they are at a different level financially to pretty much most clubs in the world.

I think the fact that it’s the League Cup diminishes its claim a little, but it would be incredible.

Burton will win, oh and the rat will sell Charlton to Varney for £1.

Would make us top of this mini-league and champions of England by default

The win the season before was at Anfield not Plough Lane

I was thinking last night what a pity the first leg is at The Ethiad as the 2nd leg is going to be pretty pointless for Burton fans. At least the other way round they would have had something to shout about for the first 20/30 mins.

Means they can take their 1-0 victory back to the Pirrelli and park the bus with 11-Goalkeepers

More chance of our takeover going through before the Qatar world cup than Burton winning this tie.

It is a nonsense with big clubs moaning about too many fixtures and FA Cup replays getting pulled by more rounds away from the final that this is still 2 legged particularly when all other rounds in this competition are settled on the day

But for the smaller club, such as Burton, it means two gates as opposed to one. And they get to host City which if it were a one leg affair, they might not do.

But why only at the Semi Final stage, why not the previous rounds

Because of the combination of fixture congestion and a lack of crowds until the latter stages of the comp.

like this view. i should respectfully add:

Wrexham 2 v Arsenal 1 - Old 4th division beats the reigning 1st Division champions

Sutton 2 v Coventry 1 - non-league beats the team that one it 2 seasons before. This would be the top if they were the cup holders IMHO, but it was 1 season too late!

Hereford 2 v Newcastle 1 - lowest ranked team ever to beat a top division side. also a screamer worldy by Ronnie Radford.

so....going be the above...if Man City do lose, it will be by 2 goals to 1 :)

What are the odds on Burton winning both games.

Wack a £1 on that. Just out of interest...

Bradford's League Cup run takes some beating. As a League Two team beat Notts County (L1), Watford (Championship), Burton fittingly(L2), Wigan (Prem), Arsenal and then Prem Villa over two leagues, which was an incredible result, before losing to Prem Swansea. Only one team wasn't in a higher league than them on that run
