Hong Kong for 40 hours with two kids?

On our way to Denmark from NZ in June, we've got 40 hours in Hong Kong. Staying at Novotel Citygate, near the airport.
On the way back to Auckland, we've also got 40 hours, staying at the same hotel.
Without making it too stressful, I guess we can do one outing, while we stay there in June and then another outing, on our way back in July.
If there are two things so see, what would they be? Big Buddha? Central Hong Kong? Where in Central Hong Kong?
Any must see thing, which the kids will enjoy too, when we're there for such a short time?

  • Its a shame that Kai Tak isnt in use anymore... Would love to see planes flying in to land there...
  • Disney Land is fun, Giant Buddha is pretty cool although not sure how much the kids will enjoy sitting in a cable car and climbing a billion and 4 steps.
  • Go to the top of one of the hills and get a selfie with the Bruce Lee Statue. I can help more with Auckland.
  • If the weather is good, take the funicular railway up to Victoria Peak, then once you are back down, cross the Harbour on Star Ferries over to Kowloon.
  • I'd go with the Peak Tram too for the kids. Great views once up.
    And Disney Land.

  • We'd rather save a trip to a Disney theme park for at least a couple of years. They're 5 and 7. Especially the 5 year old will miss out on a few rides.
Besides, we're already doing Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen plus Legoland.

    Peak Tram sounds interesting.
  • You will get loads of good advice, I am sure, on this thread. Because Hong Kong is packed with fascinating and spectacular things to do and see. But, if you have kids with you, you might want to try this, at least on one of your trips...

Stay on Lantau (the island where the airport is). Take a bus from the airport, across Lantau, and onto a place called Discovery Bay. It's a residential "town" built up around a man-made sandy bay. You can spend time on the beach literally a few steps from several restaurants of every type and price range. If the beach is a bit too dull, you could take a boat to Peng Chau island, buy fish from the fishermen and take it to a restaurant there to have it cooked. And, towards the middle of the evening, you can watch across the S China Sea to the Disney park in the distance, where, every night, without fail, they have a firework celebration to close the evening.

So, a bus ride, a beach, plenty of places to eat and drink, free fireworks and staying out of the crowds. Give it a go!

  • I lived on Discovery Bay back in the late 90's and went back last year for the first time. With such a short time frame, that's one I wouldn't recommend.
  • Drop them off at a crèche and go and get wankered.

    Beat me to it.

I've lived in Hong Kong for the past 6 years. Here are my top suggestions.

The Peak is a must for any short stay. I recommend taking the Peak Tram up and walking down, depending on how hot it is. There is quite a queue for the Tram with all the mainland tourists. Hopefully it's a clear day. If it's a bit foggy then try another day.

Take the Star Ferry: Central to TST. This is also an absolute must. At night it's pretty spectacular. And when you're at TST, you'll get off at Victoria Harbour. Which has the most spectacular and iconic view of the Hong Kong skyline. There's a light show (where all the buildings light up) at around 8pm.

Dim sum. I usually eat at places local to me so can't really recommend one in particular. Best to do research. sassyhongkong.com usually make good recommendations.

Take the tram for a ride. Central to Kennedy Town is quite nice. Get off in Kennedy Town, it's a very chilled out area and great for lunch.

Go to Stanley. It's a lovely seaside place with restaurants next to the water, and a big market. Again, very relaxed and a nice place to spend some time. Probably quite far away from you, though.

I have honestly never been to the Big Buddha so can't comment on it.

Like Curb_It I would not recommend Discovery Bay which is a rather artificial place.

Hope you enjoy! Should be absolutely sweltering by then.
  • I’m going to be stuck in Rochdale for about an hour before kick off any suggestions what I can do or see?

What about the other 58 minutes?
  • Thanks for the reminders Chunes. I am going back in January for 6 nights for my big birthday. I cannot wait.

Listen to Chunes and avoid Discovery Bay unless you fancy Milton Keynes in the sunshine and Ocean Park which is like a theme park of a naff 1950s theme park.

Fabulous place, super safe, vibrant and friendly. You and the family will love it.

    What, 4 - 0 comfortable home win ??
  • See if Hong Kong Phooey is home?
  • I love Hong Kong, desperate to go back. We stayed in the Park Lane just off Causeway Bay nearly bought some Pong G15 (Ping snides) golf clubs £150 delivered to the uk. Fascinating country, all places to visit been suggested, cleanest tube stations in the world. :)
  • Another vote for visiting Stanley...
  • Stanley sounds great, but it's rather away from the hotel. Too long a trip, if we're only there for such a short time.
  • Sorry just though of something else..

Tai O is easily accessible from your hotel by taxi or bus and is an authentic stilted fishing village on the end of Lantau island..very fishy but you can take a boat out to look for Chinese white dolphins and have tea/food at the wonderfully restored Tai O Heritage Hotel which is the former marine police station from the colonial days.

Very cool and gives a taste of the Chinese culture in rural Hong Kong.

    Nice one.
Looks like Big Buddha and Tai O could be done in on the same day.

Then on our way back to Auckland, we could do central Hong Kong.
