Controllable home wifi

I've seen BT are doing this. Does anyone know of a version that will work with the sky router?

It'd be nice to be able to switch my kids wifi access off without switching off the router.

  • @buckshee Looks interesting as would like to schedule times for my daughter to have a break. It says in the advert you don't need to be with BT - that it works with other providers. Bit pricey though.
  • It's simple to log into any router and change the password. Just log in change it and then set it back in the morning.

Ah right, I wonder if it works with sky then. Will have to look into that.

I’ve been able to do this for a long time (Apple routers) but the wife won’t let me as our daughter hates it..
  • There are ways round this for the more technically advanced child (mac spoofing), but it's relatively simple to log into most home WiFi routers and block the mac address of the device(s) you want to limit. Most of them also have schedulers that you can put on for this. We do it with the boy's phone, ipad and DS - no WiFi after 9. Of course, his fucking arsehole of a father pays for his data on the phone and doesn't guve a shit that his kid is up until 1 in the bastard morning, so only works when he runs out of 4g towards the end of the month - so we have to physically remove the devices at bedtime.

  • Your broadband supplier should offer this service. I am with Plusnet (who are owned by BT) and they have a system on line called Safeguard.

You can log in and either select entire sections to block i.e. porn, gambling, etc or you can add individual sites you want blocked.

After selecting the above you can choose between a total ban with no access or access at certain times of the day.

So for example if you did not want your child to access Facebook between 7pm and 8am that is what you select. If you do not want them on it at all you ban social media total.

It is very flexible and I would be surprised if other suppliers do not offer the same.
