Adverts or “sponsored links” on this site

I know we covered this topic ages ago and came to the view that the adverts were a necessary or at least tolerable evil and, by and large, I ignore them. Of late though there seems to be an increasing number of rather distasteful adverts, especially those involving Gary Lineker and his alleged misdemeanours in the trouser department. Am I the only one getting these? I have to say that I don’t much care for them. Any views? (Not about Gary Lineker please!!!)

Yes, I think this the case.

Bloody hell! I’m a relative innocent. God only knows what adverts some on here get!!!!!
  • Well all I'm getting is adverts for Bangcock ladyboys. Com

Why am I seeing the same really crappy adverts for ridiculous fake news websites? I thought the same as @Sillybilly . I've not been googling Gary Lineker fighting with Alan Shearer or Jeremy Clarkson killing anyone. Well...not recently.
  • I'm intrigued to know where you've browsed so that I can find out more about Gary Lineker's misdemeanours in the trousers department. Did he leave Marks & Spencers without paying for a pair of corduroy trousers?

Ha ha I saw the Lineker one the other day and thought it was pretty dodgy and obviously just click bait.

Sadly what I've come to expect of this forum under this ownership in recent years #duchateletout

I did find it funny the other day when there were loads of adverts on the brexit thread for Southbank Investments, presumably for no other reason than because our very own Southbank posts on there rather a lot. I don't suppose the company paying would find it quite so funny, but I guess that's a known risk when you pay for advertising by algorithm instead of advertising by intelligent thought. Anyway I'm looking forward to seeing some adverts for extra large underpants when the Googlebots pic up on Stig Thundercock, and it promises to get even more interesting when they realise our interest in Fanny.
  • Perhaps it wa Stig Thundercock who was responsible for those ice-cold boxers ads :-)
  • Weirdly, at the moment using my phone to access CL, I'm getting adverts for Yorkshire water, and how to report leaks and burst pipes!

  • Ads for- Chinos, suede Hushpuppies and incontinence pants!!
    ;)
  • Adverts are provided as part of Google’s affiliated Adsense programme, so should be reputable. There will always be some strange ones that filter through though (gawd knows what advertisers must pay for it or how they get their return).

The ads provided will go through some algorithm of contextual targeting based on page keywords (ie. Saudi prince being a good example) or personal targeting (ie. you’ve been looking on the web at caravan holidays and all of a sudden Haven ads start to be shown regularly) to determine what you individually view, and also impacted by the rate that the advertiser pays Google.

Sadly as said it’s a necessary evil to offset the costs of providing the site. Personally I think we are at a point where everyone accepts websites have to run ads and a largely oblivious to it, we certainly position-wise do not try to flood the page positions like others and aim to keep them more discreet (and in turn generate less return from them). We could certainly take it a lot further if we wished but there is no appetite for that and I personally refuse to go on click bait sites like News Shopper and Kent Live with all their pop ups and flooded ad pages.

Hope that helps. I know there are ways / programmes out there that block the ads but I appreciate if people don’t encourage others down that route as quite simply we would have to close the site without the cost offsetting that those ads provide when people click on them.

How much would a subscription to CL be if we wanted to avoid ads altogether?

It's lucky you said that you live in France. If you said I live on the continent, you would have got adverts for incontinence pads.
