Top Five Songs by The Fall

Absolutely gutted by this evening's news. Rather than wallow I thought it would be good to remember the great man's music. Because The Fall produced so much music, I'm gonna be cheeky and go for 5 originals and 5 covers. This is one of those that could change daily though.

Originals

Bingo Masters Breakout
Container Drivers
Spoilt Victorian Child
Prole Art Threat
Lay of the Land

Covers

Victoria
White Lightning
Rollin' Dany
Mr Pharmacist
Stay Away (Old White Train)

  • For me the stand outs are Totally Wired, Rowche Rumble, C.R.E.E.P., Container Drivers, Lie Dream of a Casino Soul (which I used to have but got nicked). I loved the way they got semi commercial in the mid 80s when Brix was there then went back to industrial noise after.
Not heard anything new by them in years. Interested to see if anyone has any recent recommendations
  • F-Oldin' Money from 1999 and Theme from Sparta FC from 2003 are two good later period ones
  • Constantly changing but off the top of my head...

    New Puritan
    Cruisers Creek
    Spectre vs Rector
    ROD
    Sparta FC
  • Although I apparently should do at my age according to Jeremy Vine, I know nothing of The Fall's music. I won't say I've never heard of them as I think I have. So "massive fan" Vine has just played Totally Wired. I don't think I've missed much if this is one of their great songs.
  • For their more recent work, the Peel Session version of ‘Blindness’ is pretty special

Sorry to bang on about Peel Sessions, but the session version of ‘New Puritan’ is fantastic too

The Fall aren't for everyone. It's all a bit rough and ready and half the fun is enjoying the humour of it. If you're the sort of person that's comfortable on a diet of traditional pop it might be best avoided, there aren't many sweet melodies or close harmonies in there. Kudos for listening though.

    And nor should they be.
All this eulogising and hand-wringing will have MES laughing his cock off, rarely has one person enjoyed himself so much cos so many people completely miss the point.

Sorry, sworn to secrecy. But as MES said once, Fall fans are the salt of the Earth. Feeling very salty today.

Ahh the old emperors clothes excuse for awful 'music'.
I knew nothing of the Fall (fool) so checked it/him out, the band appear to be tight but he just comes across as a complete bellend, yeah you'll say that was his point, but really anyone can be a dick, that Glastonbury set in 2015 was turgid, he had even pissed himself before he went on, and no I don't believe that he spilt a drink on himself......righto!
However to give balance to my post, music is totally subjective, so if people like the out of tune noise, crack on.

I met him once when he was hanging around in Edwyn Collins' studio when we were recording a Vic Godard album. Scary.
  • Extricate was probably the most listenable LP. Great opening salvo of "Sing Harpy", "I'm Frank" and "Bill is dead" - superb.

I was nearly laid out in his presence, but not by him. A Fall gig at Crocs, Rayleigh, in the eighties - the Bend Sinister tour I think, or possibly Nations Saving Grace. Smith was 'singing' through a megaphone made out of an old cornflake packet. I was out of my head on the dance floor having a whale of a time wrecking away. The bloke in front of me told me to calm down a couple of times, but I didn't. He got increasingly humpy and at some point turned around to thump me. At that very instant my legs collapsed. He took a big swing and, so I'm told, tripped over me to land his punch on a huge bloke who'd been standing behind me. By the time I'd got to my feet, the big bloke had taken the angry bloke outside. And the band played on.
  • Hit the North-ah is the only one I can get all the way through.
  • This is hilarious and nice to see us first up:

God - for someone who don't like the Fall you seem committed to telling us why. Now THATS the emperors new clothes
