Post Malone - Rockstar

can someone a bit more 'gansta' than me explain the lyrics. Couldn't understand most of them and now I've read them I'm still none the wiser.

Here are Post Malone and 21 Savage's "Rockstar" lyrics for your reference.

Post Malone:
Hahahahaha
Tank God
Ayy, ayy

Post Malone:
I've been fuckin' hoes and poppin' pillies
Man, I feel just like a rockstar (star, ayy, ayy)
All my brothers got that gas
And they always be smokin' like a Rasta
Fuckin' with me, call up on a Uzi
And show up, name them the shottas
When my homies pull up on your block
They make that thing go grrra-ta-ta-ta (pow, pow, pow, ayy, ayy)

Post Malone:
Switch my whip, came back in black
I'm startin' sayin', "Rest in peace to Bon Scott" (ayy)
Close that door, we blowin' smoke
She ask me light a fire like I'm Morrison (ayy)
Act a fool on stage
Prolly leave my fuckin' show in a cop car (ayy)
Shit was legendary
Threw a TV out the window of the Montage
Cocaine on the table, liquor pourin', don't give a damn
Dude, your girlfriend is a groupie, she just tryna get in
Sayin', "I'm with the band" (ayy, ayy)
Now she actin' outta pocket, tryna grab up on my pants
Hundred bitches in my trailer say they ain't got a man
And they all brought a friend (yeah, ayy, ayy, ayy)

Post Malone:
I've been fuckin' hoes and poppin' pillies
Man, I feel just like a rockstar (star, ayy, ayy)
All my brothers got that gas
And they always be smokin' like a Rasta
Fuckin' with me, call up on a Uzi
And show up, name them the shottas
When my homies pull up on your block
They make that thing go grrra-ta-ta-ta (pow, pow, pow)

21 Savage
I've been in the Hills fuckin' superstars
Feelin' like a popstar (21, 21, 21)
Drankin' Henny, bad bitches jumpin' in the pool
And they ain't got on no bra (no bra)
Hit her from the back, pullin' on her tracks
And now she screamin' out, "no más" (yeah, yeah, yeah)
They like "Savage, why you got a twelve car garage and you only got six cars?" (21)
I ain't with the cakin', how you kiss that? (kiss that?)
Your wifey say I'm lookin' like a whole snack (big snack)
Green hundreds in my safe, I got old racks (old racks)
L.A. bitches always askin', "Where the coke at?" (21, 21)
Livin' like a rockstar, smash out on a cop car
Sweeter than a Pop-Tart, you know you are not hard
I done made the hot chart, 'member I used to trap hard
Livin' like a rockstar, I'm livin' like a rockstar (ayy)

Post Malone & 21 Savage:
I've been fuckin' hoes and poppin' pillies

Fuckin' with me, call up on a Uzi
And show up, name them the shottas
When my homies pull up on your block
They make that thing go grrra-ta-ta-ta (grrra-ta-ta-ta-ta)

Post Malone:
Star, star, rockstar, rockstar, star
Rockstar
Rockstar, feel just like a rock...
Rockstar
Rockstar
Rockstar
Feel just like a...

  • Very repetitive, so here is my interpretation.

I've been fuckin' hoes (Ladies) and poppin' pillies (Taking paracetamol)
Man, I feel just like a rockstar (star, ayy, ayy)
All my brothers got that gas
And they always be smokin' like a Rasta (Smoking the ‘old doobies!)
Fuckin' with me, call up on a Uzi (A machine Gun)
And show up, name them the shottas (People with Guns)
When my homies (Pals) pull up on your block
They make that thing go grrra-ta-ta-ta (pow, pow, pow, ayy, ayy) – (Shooting noises)
  • What a load of nonsense.
  • He feels like he's a rockstar because women get very promiscuous around him, whether thats in his trailer after a show, in the hotel, up in house and pool parties in Beverly Hills, it doesn't matter.
He also feels like a rockstar cos he keep popping pills, smoking weed, snorting coke, drinking lots and generally partaking in reckless acts like throwing a TV out a hotel window, riding about town with guns and smashing up a cop car, to name a few misdemeanors
  • Ben Folds once decided to turn gangster rap into a love song ballad thing. I think it's better this way:

"Hundred bitches in my trailer say they ain't got a man"

at least I get the gist of it now even if some of it still doesn't make sense, thanks.
  • The important thing about Post Malone is that he speaks for all rappers ever, and all rap is basically exactly like what he does
  • I've been fuckin' hoes and poppin' pillies
Man, I feel just like a rockstar (star, ayy, ayy)
All my brothers got that gas
Someone has been having sex with garden tools, has mistaken paracetamol packets for bubble wrap, and in the meantime his brothers are farting a lot

    Tank God

He is thanking the Lord Almighty for an as-yet undisclosed reason.

I've been fuckin' hoes and poppin' pillies

He is now explaining that he has had relations with women, for in this lexicon, 'hoes' tends to refer to women in general, rather than garden rakes or prostitutes.

He has also been taking narcotics.

Man, I feel just like a rockstar (star, ayy, ayy)

This is an effect of the narcotics.

All my brothers got that gas

His brothers are in fact his friends, and not blood relations. I am uncertain what the 'gas' refers to, could be the aforementioned drugs.

And they always be smokin' like a Rasta

They are smoking marijuana, much like rastafarians would.

Fuckin' with me, call up on a Uzi

His friends are playing games, possibly teasing him. Seems extreme to pull out a gun, but that's what he claims he did.

And show up, name them the shottas

Hmm. This has escalated quickly. He is now referring to getting shotguns for...

When my homies pull up on your block

... a drive by shooting. It would seem the singer is now directing the lyrics at an enemy of some sort.

They make that thing go grrra-ta-ta-ta (pow, pow, pow, ayy, ayy)

This is a reference to gunshots, much like how a child makes gun noises when shooting toy guns.

Switch my whip, came back in black

Switch may be a reference to the teenage party game that's much like 'spin the bottle'. And now he's now referring to the Australian hard rock band AC/DC's album, Back In Black for...

I'm startin' sayin', "Rest in peace to Bon Scott" (ayy)

...this is a twist I didn't see coming - a reference to the Scottish-born Australian singer and songwriter, best known for being the lead vocalist and lyricist of AC/DC from 1974 until his death in 1980.

Close that door, we blowin' smoke

Come on in and join us, for we are getting high in here!

She ask me light a fire like I'm Morrison (ayy)

A female smoker has joined him, and this has become a clumsy reference to The Doors.

    Act a fool on stage

It's not quite Don McLean, so hard to say how much depth this line has. I think he's referring to himself.

Prolly leave my fuckin' show in a cop car (ayy)

    He's a bad boy, apparently.

    Shit was legendary

If he doesn't say so himself.

Threw a TV out the window of the Montage

Seems unlikley he did this, possibly a reference to Keith Richards.

Cocaine on the table, liquor pourin', don't give a damn

    Well.

It's unclear who the singer is now referring to. If it's me, I take offence to that. Seems to be a breakdown of life as a music star backstage at a gig.

  • I think it was about some bird who was filmed on a tube

who’s G got a cab paid for by a sister but they never turned up N and she is gonna piss on da mother’s grave

    I think that’s what I heard
  • Sounds like a cnut
  • A common theme in popular music which goes back to "I get a Kick out of You". Here's that badass motherf_cker Sinatra. :-)

  • 'Gas' usually refers to people getting over-hyped about something or someone, usually themselves or a girl.

A whip is a car, so switch the whip is literally changing cars. This could be a reference to J Hus who's song Did You See contained the lyric, "did you see what I done, came in a black Benz, left in a white one"
  • thank you OneLung, that explains a lot

I tease! Obviously Post Malone is a total wanker
  • What about reverse gangster wrap?
    Anybody want to try:

    "Macarthur Park"

Spring was never waiting for us, girl
    It ran one step ahead
As we followed in the dance
Between the parted pages and were pressed
    In love's hot, fevered iron
Like a striped pair of pants
MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
    Oh, no
    Related

I recall the yellow cotton dress
    Foaming like a wave
On the ground around your knees
The birds, like tender babies in your hands
And the old men playing checkers
    By the trees
MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have the recipe again
    Oh, no

There will be another song for me
    For I will sing it
There will be another dream for me
    Someone will bring it
I will drink the wine while it is warm
And never let you catch me looking at the sun
And after all the loves of my life
After all the loves of my life
    You'll still be the one
I will take my life into my hands
    And I will use it
I will win the worship in their eyes
    And I will lose it
I will have the things that I desire
And my passion flow like rivers through the sky
And after all the loves of my life
Oh, after all the loves of my life
    I'll be thinking of you
    And wondering why

MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
    Oh, no
    Oh, no
    No, no
    Oh, no

  • They don't write 'em like they used to.
  • Inspirational
  • "Hit her from the back, pullin' on her tracks" this would be the obligatory train reference
  • Not a clue what he’s on about but quite like the tune
  • It's pop music. Elvis and his groin thrusting and the Beatles with their long hair had the oldies gushing once upon a time.
