Exhibition of photographs marking the 40th anniversary of the 'Battle of Lewisham'

On 13th August 1977 the far-right National Front (NF) attempted to march from New Cross to Lewisham town centre, leading to violent clashes with counter demonstrators and the police.
An exhibition - What are you taking pictures for? - takes place throughout August, at Goldsmiths College.
(Kingsway Corridor, Richard Hoggart Building, Lewisham Way, daily, until 31st August. 9.00am - 9.00pm. Free to enter).

(I am posting this for public information and don't wish to debate the issue(s). However, this being a forum that invites input, please feel free to discuss, if wished).

Thanks for the link. I was there on the day and both the Clash and Sham 69 used pictures of the protests on various promotional material and records.
  • Clash filmed some of the bankrobber video im Lewisham High Street.

    I'd forgotten that, cheers.

    Such a great band
  • Hardly a battle.
One bunch of unwashed thugs fighting another bunch of thugs.

The violent behaviour on both sides shames Lewisham.
Typical Millwall to want to celebrate its criminal past.

It had fuck all to do with Millwall and I can assure you that there were plenty of Charlton Covered Enders there as well.
  • I was watching us play Coventry in a friendly at The Valley. I had to walk home to the Old Kent Road as there were no trains or buses obviously. I remember walking through Lewisham about 6.30 ish seeing the carnage left behind.

Millwall played at home that day to Ipswich also in a friendly.

  • There was a piece about the 'Battle of Lewisham' on Robert Elms's show on BBC Radio London this morning.
In addition to the photographic exhibition mentioned at the top of this thread, there are events taking place tomorrow and over the weekend. Here are the details.

Thanks for the tip, Anna Kissed. Published this week - a booklet of photographs of the battle by the great Homer Sykes: https://www.caferoyalbooks.com/shop/the-battle-of-lewisham-1977-homer-sykes

  • There's a bit more info here, with links to photos, archive material and eyewitness reports: http://deptforddame.blogspot.co.uk/

On your recommendation, Anna Kissed, I visited the Goldsmiths exhibition and found it fascinating. There was a very talented bunch of young photographers covering the battle in 1977, all of whom have continued to make fine work over many years – Homer Sykes, Chris Schwarz, Syd Shelton, Paul Trevor, Mike Abrahams, Chris Steele-Perkins and Peter Marlow.

You got close enough to smell their BO or did you have another way of knowing about their bathing habits?

Its exhibitions like this that make me glad my family emigrated from london.
This event was nothing to be proud of.

Essex may be sneered at for lacking tbe diversity of london, but Essex people are just simply better.

It's not just the diversity it's lacking but also basic intelligence.
