Lead singer of Soundgarden and probably most famous over here for the Bond theme for Casino Royale.

  • Shit! 52 is no age at all. Superunknown forms part of the soundtrack of the most fun period of my life. RIP.
  • Fucking hell

Absolute legend - favourite rock vocalist of the last 30 years

    RIP
  • Jesus that's a shock. His voice was utterly stunning. In the era of grunge inspired rock he really did have one of the most powerful and captivating voices going.
  • Really sad.

I'm not a massive fan of Soundgarden but I used to absolutely love Audioslave. RIP

  • You are kidding me? Holy shit! Was listening to Audioslave this week.

An incredible talent although not particularly charismatic as a front man.

I was fortunate to see Soundgarden play a few years ago, Motorhead were also on the bill as were Faith No More. Thankfully Mike Patton will live forever!

  • What that actual fuck!!!!!

Preferred Audioslave to Soundgarden but saw Soundgarden at Reading just before Neil Young and they were great that night.

    RIP

I like RATM and Soundgarden but thought Audioslave, who I'll never get the chance to see play now, were better than both of them.
  • Being a metal head and rock fan, I love the music of the 80s and 90s, not a massive Soundgarden fan but enjoyed their stuff like Black Hole Sun.

    RIP
  • Maybe one for cover to cover - this is a fantastic version of Nothing Compares to You.

  • First loss in ages that made me go SHIIIIIT. Great up with Soundgarden. Superb singer
  • Black Hole Sun on repeat this morning, tune. Even his Bond theme is decent, gutted
  • I saw him play an acoustic set at Royal Albert Hall last year. He was jaw-droppingly good.

I was still harbouring hopes that Audioslave would get back together for a new album.

    RIP
  • Absolutely gutted. What a voice
  • What a shame.

I loved this one by them.

  • Yeah very sad, RIP. Will be putting some Soundgarden and Audioslave on today.
  • Audioslave formed when I was a teenager getting into rock/metal music and I absolutely loved them.

    RIP.
  • Soundgarden were right up there with Nirvana for me during my university years. RIP Chris - another shocker.
  • Always have Cochise on my permanent play list. RIP Chris.

  • Terribly sad and shocking this news, he possessed an incredible voice. Loved Soundgarden and his work with Audioslave but I'll be playing Temple of the Dog's 'Hunger Strike' when I get home.

    RIP Chris.

Found Soundgarden while I was into Nirvana. Jesus Christ Pose one of my favourite Soundgarden songs. What a great voice.

Mike Patton has one of the best voices to grace this earth.
  • Looked at your thumbnail avatar @Bedsaddick and thought that Lawrence Llewelyn Bowen had died for a minute.
  • Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley, Scott Weiland and now Chris Cornell, only Eddie Vedder and Anthony Keidis left from the bands I was into most growing up.
