  • Last game I played, which was probably 12 years ago I scored a fifty against Nat West Saturday 4ths. My first and only senior cricket 50. Scored plenty in junior, schools and District cricket but became a bowler as an "adult" opening the bowling for Coggeshall in the Two Counties Leagues. Miss cricket. Would love a game now and then!

Guys does anyone here play for Catford Wanderers or know what's going on with them?

They're meant to be our oppo this Saturday, but of their three league teams, they only fielded one, and I've not been able to contact anyone except their handbook 3rd team skipper contact - who's left the club!

    Any help would be great.

EDIT: don't worry, just got in touch with them.

If you haven't done so already, I would drop Brian Smith an email at KRCL who should be able to tell you what's going on or at least an alternative contact there - in case you don't have it email address is Brian_Smith_SCC@hotmail.co.uk

Thanks mate - have just heard back from their fixture secretary.
  • My season's preparations got even worse on Thursday, took my match bat into the nets and snapped it.

Also, had a late one last night, knowing that I was playing 4's today.

Woke up to the 3's skipper on the phone saying I'm with him ... away at Dartford! FFS.

Seb did the same thing with his bat on Thursday. Worse was to follow unfortunately - I received a call from Seb's school yesterday. He'd had a fall (it wasn't a fall as such - he was tripped by a school friend using the strap of his bag). He's in a cast now as he has done some damage to his wrist, the extent of which we will ascertain on Monday as he has an emergency appointment at St Thomas's.

He's been training for six months and worst case scenario is that he is out fort the season - before he's even hit a ball in anger!

Thanks for all the good wishes - original diagnosis regarding the wrist incorrect as the specialist at St Thomas's has confirmed that the boy has actually fractured his thumb. Which, in itself, is good news because he should only be out for 6 weeks or so as opposed to our fear that he would be out for the season.

From a financial perspective it's actually bad news - because we've got to replace that bat!
Only just seen this AA. My very best wishes to Seb for a speedy recovery.

Thanks mate. It could have been a lot worse and I'm sure he'll appreciate his matches even more as a result of this - playing as many as 50-60 games in a season can lead to the attitude "it doesn't matter if I miss this bus because another one will be here soon" when, especially as a batsman and wicket keeper, if you aren't up for it then it can become a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy. Kent have been really good and said that they want him to be part of the match day squad for the first match on Sunday, a pre-season friendly.

Hope all is good with you and yours.
  • Played for the 3rds today as our game was called off. Bowled out for 33 chasing 224. Wasn't given a bowl, weirdly, but was then sent out to bat at 3 against one of the better bowlers I've faced. Mind you I only faced one ball

Have no idea what happened to the 3s on Saturday. Looked pretty disgraceful. What happened with the batting?!!

They were good bowlers, and we batted extremely badly. I got a good ball at least. Their batting innings was characterised by five stumpings and a six-fer for the incredibly slow spinner who plays for our fours, but this was simply symptomatic of an ultra-aggressive mindset that saw them score at six an over and pulverise everyone (especially that slow spinner). We also dropped catches. I even dropped one - admittedly, the hardest chance that went down, diving forwards to a cleanly-hit glance at backward square. I then caught one at slip. I'd like to say that this confirms me as a safe slipper, but it was taken at about the fourth attempt and involved, at one point, a kick-up
That must have been an awesome sight. Shame I missed that, having sacrificed myself to fill in for the 1s - my first such appearance since 1998, at which point I embarked on what turned into a 17 year exile in uncivilised countries that don't play cricket.

Inevitably this meant I was finally dismissed, but looking on the bright side, I now possess an average for the season so far.
  • My mob had a good game against a team called Waggoners who made 190 in a time game.My skipper dropped a catch second ball and mangled his finger..the bloke went on to make a ton.

I then dropped the other opener when he was on 3 and he made 50.With 3 of our bowlers missing I had to chuck a few down, needless to say they ended up in the next postcode area.

a brave effort to get the runs fell 4 short in the end.

Geth's in the 3s this week. Perhaps not such a bad thing, as we can take a stride closer to Charlton hegemony by ousting the Palace fan...

Ugh. Sounds like a terrible day at the office all round really. Here's hoping we'll fare better across the board this Saturday!
  • I helped out my Uncle's team in the 90's - I cant bat or bowl & was there just to make up the numbers. Mainly fielded out in the deep somewhere (boundary chasing) but on one occasion I was at mid on & took 3 catches - felt pretty chuffed !

One match in in West Dulwich always stands out - not anything to do with the game itself but for a scorecard up in the clubhouse. Being a golfer I'm used to seeing the best course scorecards mounted on the walls but this cricket one really stood out. It should the 1st batting team being all out for 27 and the 2nd tem being 24 for 0, and then being all out for 26. I've tried locating this on the internet but found no trace. must be the biggest collapse in history taking into account the small total they had to chase & that they were almost there.

Blimey - that was some match !! Either a dodgy pitch or too much alcohol the night before. I would have thought that the 2 bowlers (Pope & Wood) would have known what the pitch was like as batted accordingly. Noticed that no boundaries were scored & only 1 player got into double figures. The outfielders must have been pretty bored.

The match I referred was rather similar. Lots of 0's

A play-cricket pet hate of mine, but they've not filled in the boundaries scored. A scorecard always looks better with boundaries and balls faced entered.

If you have a look at the match report (written by the winning team) attached to the card, it says that the chasing team hit a six off the second ball of their innings ( 6 out of the 15 they scored)
  • Having an okay start.

Batting well, averaging 53, but been bowling poorly.

Our new overseas arrived on Thursday, though. The second leading wicket taker in Pakistani First-Class cricket last season. 82mph, swings it a mile both ways ... hope to do lots of work with him in the nets.

Fucking hell, you'd better wear your batting boots in the nets to avoid broken toes from the yorkers.

Played against a seriously quick bloke out here in Brisbane a few years back, he bowled this massive in swinger which I barely saw and then just before impact I realised I was still wearing my fucking trainers....

I was plumb LBW but our skipper was umpiring and being a cheating Aussie bastard he gave it not out which meant I got to face a pissed off bowler who spent the rest of his spell trying to kill me.

    Happy days.....

Shitting it to be fair, although he should tone it down in the nets!!

Saying that, a 1s player who has played a bit of Essex 2's not so long ago, was recently bowling slow nibblers at me in the nets and I drove one over his head.

Don't think he appreciated that from a shite 3s/4s bowler who bats.

He ran to get the ball, steamed in from a full run up and nearly took my head off at full pace. 80 plus. Far too good for me, somehow got a glove to it instead of wearing one in the grill.

Did say he could swing it both ways...

Fuck facing that on a green wicket!

    11-0 to 15 all out .

I used to play for shootershill many moons ago and I've played with half that team and there's some decent players there .
Couple of Charlton fans as well , Chris Woods uncle owns Andrews Aircon

During this winter Seb was having a 1-2-1 when his coach recognised the bloke bowling on his own in the net next door and asked him whether he fancied bowling at Seb instead of against unguarded stumps which he agreed to.

He didn't get Seb out but, equally, Seb wasn't silly enough to hit him over the top. I believe, given that the coach worked with the bowler when he was growing up at Blackheath, we are talking about the same bowler you faced.

It's the three run outs whilst chasing 34 that makes me laugh.
Obviously a required run rate of 0.6 per over is a big ask so risks had to be taken.

I suspect we may play in the same league. If you can see to it that you're in the 4s on 24 June, Paddy's army is waiting for you. Don't bring the overseas guy though.

There was a six (see match report) so boundaries not recorded it seems. Most of the Walmer boys still play in the KCL, and have a good chance of promotion this year.

    Looks like we do.

And bring the overseas guy if you like - if he tries to bowl properly, our pitch will probably send the ball flying everywhere, so I'd comfortably expect our top scorer to be byes/other extras...
