  • Imagine how much higher they'd be if we had 18k instead of 8k every game
  • Would have fully expected the Championship to be up, as Newcastle and Villa are two of the biggest teams to be in there for donkey's years. Very surprised to see a 400k increase in League One. Though, that's not nearly as big once the Charlton regime's attendance lies are taken into account. League Two saw a slight drop.

  • Any articles on the EFL trophy attendances? Thought not.

    Did KM do the counting?
  • Over 21.7 million supporters passed through the turnstiles of an EFL competition in 2022-23, with the highest cumulative attendances recorded for league matches since 1953-54.

Of that total, 19.8 million attended a fixture in the Sky Bet Championship, League One or League Two and the end of season EFL Play-Offs, ranking the season in the top 10 highest regular EFL season attendances of all time.

All three divisions featured in the top 20 best attended Leagues across Europe in 2022-23, while a record 443,765 fans attended the 15 Sky Bet EFL Play-Offs, the most since the format was introduced in 1987.

Highest EFL attendances since 1953-54 in a cost of living crisis and plenty of our fans tell us they can't afford to attend. You wouldn't think we were some of the poorest fans in England.
  • Three divisions in 2022/23 beat the four divisions in 1953/54?

Or are they doing a BBC / SKY and pretending that the other lot don't exist?
  • UK population in 1953 was 50 million; UK population in 2023 is 67 million. On those figures alone, if football can’t attract more people to a game then there is something going wrong.

I suspect a lot of fans would have purchased season tickets before the cost of living crisis really started to bite.  Base rate, for example, was around 1-1.25% when STs went on sale.  It’ll be interesting to see what happens with this year’s numbers.

To be fair, the financial shit storm started after last season began. Would be interesting to.see how this year goes and the average age of purchasers. You're probably less effected if an older fan, with no mortgage and a decent pension/savings behind you.

I'd put money on it that sales to 20-40 year olds are down.
  • The announced figures are virtually meaningless these days. They were probably undercounted in 1954 and they are certainly overcounted now.
