Remembering games against the Orient.

My first full season was 63/64. It is still one of my favourite seasons; we finished fourth in the second tier and it was Eddie Firmani's season back.
We played them away on Good Friday and won 3-0 and to be honest we could have easily doubled that. Played the return game on the Monday and we lost 2-1. There was I thinking we were going to score at least six!
Mind you the scores were wierd in those days with quick turnaround fixtures. I remember in the same season West Ham losing at home to Blackburn 8-2 on Xmas day and winning the turnaround 4-1 I think.
At the time I was thinking how does that happen. My dad put me right on that!

  • i remember one at Brisbane Road when it p1ssed it down and the ref abandoned it at half-time , think Flanagan and Hales were playing.
Also remember another at the Valley when Ralph Coates was playing for them.
  • Two spring to mind for me... the 1-0 defeat on New Years Eve when Hamer got himself sent off, still feel it was a harsh decision and the one where Chris Solly scored his first ever goal for the club.

I assume pre fisticuffs and not post!
  • took my mate (arsenal fan) to his first Charlton game down there in 2009. we won 2-1 after being 1 nil down. he remembers the atmosphere and nearly getting hit by a chair that got thrown through a window of a pub.

Pretty sure that game was my first even live match, no goals and rained off! 1979 I think. Went with the cubs
  • I remember a friendly on a Friday night that was abandoned after about 5 minutes in a blizzard with the score 0-0.
  • I remember a cup game in the 90's when ref Alf Buksh gave the O's a pen quite late on.
  • Our first season in L1, I remember us winning there with Deon Burton doing his Usain Bolt style celebration!
  • 5-1 at The Valley, night game in the late 70's. Gritt scored a screamer at the Jimmy Seed end.

You're not thinking of the game we won 5-2 which was a bit later than that?

Easter 1964 - when we won away 3-0 and then lost at home. My Dad just kept repeating the same words over and over again - something like "they should all be fired", "they should all be fired".
  • I've mentioned this before ... Ted Phillips ex Ipswich and mucker of Ray Crawford, the man with the 'hardest shot in football', smacked in a fierce one from outside the box through a crowd of players .. the ball hit Mike Rose dead centre on the napper and knocked him out .. poor old Rose, he was so unpopular that many on the terraces were laughing and applauding .. this would have been sometime in the early to mid sixties

and Mc Oxo from a dead eye Francis cross?

things dahn the valley just NEVER change ((:>)
  • Went to Brisbane Road with my elder brothers in the late sixties when Mark Lazarus was playing for the O's. One of my brothers commented to Lazarus as he was about to take a corner, that his playing wasn't very good or words to that effect.

To which Lazarus replied 'Why don't you fuck off'. Which was fair enough.

  • Wasn't there a home game against them at Easter 1972? We were in real trouble points wise and were scrapping for our 2nd division lives. I seem to recall we let in a long range own goal and lost 1-2. At the end of that season we lost 0-5 away to Blackpool and duly got relegated to the 3rd.
Also remember the hard fought 0-0 at Brisbane Road, which kept us in the section.

That was late 60s i think? Didn't even last 5 minutes did it ?

PC Dave Shipperley og from the halfway line, that was "Good" Friday & next day we played Norwich also at home lost 2-0 i think, a fair bit of trouble that game & all of the Norwich Coaches had their windows smashed afterwards.

I watched the New Year's Eve game on Sky with my, then seven year old son. After six minutes Hamer was sent off and we bought on reserve ‘keeper Sullivan who replaced Wagstaff.

When Orient scored, I told my disappointed son that it is difficult playing with ten men. He disagreed and said we still had eleven players and that Hamer had been substituted when Sullivan came on. I then had to spend the rest of the half explaining that an outfield player had been subbed and not Hamer who was red carded.

In desperation I got out a set of chess pieces and lined twelve of them up to explain. I still have a bishop with ‘Wagstaff’, a King with ‘Hamer’ and a knight with ‘Sullivan’ badly scrawled on them to this day as a reminder.

In my son’s defence it was NYE and I’d had a drink and perhaps my explanation was at fault.

why did you bring a chess set to a football match?

I think you're right. Maybe, 2 or 3 mins. It was in the days when you played a friendly if you got knocked out of the FA Cup in the 3rd round and had a spare Saturday when the 4th round took place. Nowadays, the players would be given a much needed rest.

Yes, your probably right. More like early 80's - 82 or 83 ? Certainly before Selhurst

Yes that 5-2 Friday night game was early 80's. I can remember going there for a couple of 1-1 draws. Once we scored very early in the game. Can't remember exactly who scored. Maybe Leroy Ambrose or Phil Walker. The second time I am sure was on a Sunday and we drew 1-1 with Paul Elliott heading our equaliser in the last minute. Remember losing 0-2 to them at The Valley as well around the same time.

Also went to the night game over there where we needed a point to stay up and got a very tense 0-0 draw.

Didn't Mark Kinsella score a cracker there once in a friendly. Think he was on trial for us at that time.
  • My first visit to Orient was a 0-0 rained off at half time. I remember in the warm up Terry Brisley just laughing as he was trying to pass the ball and it just stopping in the water. The game shouldn't have started it was so bad and we got drenched. I think the replay was also 0-0 near the end of the season and kept us both up.
  • 1970s harebrained link up with New England Teamen with Paddy and Flash off on loan to the USA weeks before the end of the season left us needing a draw at Brisbane Rd to stay up - a stressful draw was ground out against the draw specialists then known simply as Orient

    Blame Nathan Prior
  • I was at the abandoned game, my only one I think until Donny Rovers.

I remember the 5-2 Steve Gritt evening game & the Hamer sent off game. Great atmosphere for that one.

This was the replay of the abandoned game, and even this got put back 24 hours because of heavy rain on the original date. Jeff Wood made an amazing save in injury time to keep us up - it looked like curtains for the O's but they won their last game and stayed up. It was the year Blackpool finished their games and were something like 15th, but a surreal run of results in a load of rearranged games sent them down. Nowadays you'd say "Unbelievable Jeff".
