    Definitely the second one.

Although this is on the basis of having only listened to the first one, and deciding that anything would be better than that dirge.

I don't need to listen as I can replay them both in my head so clearly.

Anything the unbelievably beautiful Joni Mitchell does is always better than anyone else.

Two contrasting views there but the idea is that you actually listen to the songs.

Joni for me for the reason's Bob gave.

OK. Listened to both now. The second one is not as awful as the first one.

I prefer Matthews Southern Comfort but for personal reasons.
    Love Joni.
Very, very different takes on the song.

Ah its a tough one Henners, I generally always go for originals, because no one can have the feel for a song like the composer, after all its their emotional and creative intelligence that they are using, however the arrangement and harmonies for me on MSC make it a better listen.

Nothing against MSC , good version and the one that I heard first.

But, to me Joni wrote an anthem for a generation for me.
When she played this in concert, as a rather nervous artist at the BBC as did Neil Young, and James Taylor there is just something rather special with that trio at the time.
This version she has the voice of an angel, and yes people can be cynical and sneering about the sentiments', but then I was a child of the time. As I listen to 90 per cent of my music being 'Blues\progressive', the woman is a true artist to me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aOGnVKWbwc

definitely MSC. I like Joni Mitchell but her voice grates on her version.

Good thread btw. have to do some other ones. A few I would pick out are:

Wild horses - Rolling Stones or Susan Boyle (yes, I 'm not joking)
Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin or Rolf Harris (This one I am joking)

She is all of those things, Ken - and so much more.

Joni, for me, is also one of the most beautiful women on this earth. Yes this is an old picture but she has never lost that beauty.

Hendrix or Dylan: All along the watchtower, Like a Rolling Stone.
Jimi would have said Bob, his favourite artist.

Joni Mitchell. Both make me feel very nostalgic. Although the CSNY version is as good as hers IMO.

    Sorry Joni.
I love you and all that, but Matthews Southern Comfort edges it.

Long time since I hear either and fully expected to prefer Joni. However it's MSC that I now go for, love the melodies.

To get through the Joni Mitchell version, I'll go for Southern Comfort, preferably on the rocks.

Have to admit I did not know this was a JoniMitchell song so the first time I have ever heard her version.
Think the MSC cover showcases the song and makes it a hit but I think I prefer Joni Mitchell's rendition. Strangely the video going with it makes her version more poignant, capturing a moment in time.
