When it's good it can be very good.

Today with Nigel Owens was excellent. Look it up on the BBC player. Told his story well and with real bravery I thought.
His music was cack though.

Sorry but I wasn't given any option as to where to place this thread other than General Charlton.

    Just listened to Brad Wiggins and Tony Adams today on a long journey. I really enjoyed Noel G's and Tom Hanks. Those been my favourite so far.

    Davina McCall was a surprise to me recently, Springsteen was very open too and good music. The guy who does the choir who's name escapes me was good.

    Radio 4 is worth the licence fee on its own.
    think the same. though for me some of their dramas/comedy dramas are poor they make up for it with their insightful documentary type pieces. most on subjects I wouldn't of thought could be so interesting. the panel show programmes and of the in depth news pieces are usually really good as well.

    Agree although sometimes I stumble on a drama and really enjoy it.

    The news is excellent and I live the obscure subjects they cover in documentaries, from our own correspondent, etc.

    Listen to the podcasts, they only play a very short bit of each song.

    I always marvel at this sort of narrow minded comment! His music was 'cack' purely because you didn't like it? Music taste is in the eye of the beholder and one man's 'cack' is another man's heaven. I'm sure he'd really enjoy your Miley Cyrus and Slipknot collection.

    In my opinion his music was cack. As you say it's in the ear of the hearer, however more importantly I have great admiration for him and the way he told his story. Which was actually the point of my post, which seems to have passed you by.

    Neither Miley Cyrus or Slipknot are to be found in my music collection.

    The (three hour) 75th anniversary program is interesting with snippets from each decade. Towards the end there is a reminder of Simon Cowell's luxury item ... a mirror ... obviously.

    I have subsequently listened to Captain Eric 'Winkle' Brown - charismatic ace pilot, who at 95 had led a life and a half.

    I thought the Kenneth Williams Desert Island Discs Archive podcast was very funny. The archive covers 2005 to 2011 and includes an eclectic mix of guests, such as Dennis Healey, Johnny Vegas, Fay Weldon, Morrisey, Jerry Springer, Alan Sillitoe, Stephen King, Alan Johnson etc.

    In terms of the other Radio 4 podcasts, I like 'A Good Read' and 'World Book Club', as well as some of the shorter 8-9 minute podcasts like 'Inheritance Tracks' and 'Witness'. The latter covers aspects of relatively recent historical events and, as the name suggests, features testimony from those involved at the time (some of it from the archives). All manner of historical events are featured - e.g. Chairman Mao's Cultural Revolution, The Big Bang, Exposing Child Abuse in the Catholic Church, Race Riots in Liverpool, The First CIA Coup in Latin America, the Wayne Bobbitt Story and his wife's subsequent trial (hard to forget that one), Smoking and Lung Cancer (the early research), the Battle for Mixed Race Marriage in the US (now featured in the film 'Loving'), The 1968 Thalidomide Trial in Germany, Kim Philby: The Third Man, Angela Merkel (her early career as a young East German scientist, under the watchful eye of the Stasi), the inadvertent discovery of Viagra, The Plot against Harold Wilson and The Sale of London Bridge.

    He's always a pretentious prick. He was on BBC breakfast the other day and kept saying "go on. Say someone famous and I bet I met them. Go on say someone! Yep met them." Charlie on there was looking at him with disgust.

    First Desert Island discs I remember listening to was Chris Bonnington, when he broke down talking about his friends dying on the mountains alongside him.

    I think the R4 Dramas are 50-50. There is a good one on at the moment Red & Blue about War Games. The episode this week was about Flu epidemic. pretty insightfull view of the state of street markets in Hong Kong and China.
