Is technology largely passing you by?

The Uber thread has got me thinking about what a philistine I am in terms of the progression in technology.

Other than using social media, I've never really embraced much in terms of developments, and most conversation on here on things like Kodi are alien to me.

I've got an iPhone but it's the first one I've had and I only probably scratch the surface on its potential. I don't have any music on it, use Siri or anything like that. A few basic apps (less than 10) and that's it really.

I've never used eBay either for buying or selling, I've never bought off Amazon. I've no idea what Bluetooth is or how it works, I've got a basic 10yr old tv, ditto DVD player and no music system. Blue Ray sounds like a geezer from down the pub. I've rarely bought anything online and have only ever used a cash point about a dozen times.

Shutting my curtains involves pulling the curtains and putting the heating on involves flicking the switch. On line check ins baffle me and always involve a phone call to the company afterwards to check if done it right.

So am I running a lap behind the pack or am I more the norm than perhaps I think I am?

surprised you are not lighting fires by rubbing two sticks together!

For someone of your age, which is around the same as me, I would say you are a little behind the curve.
  • Can answer in a word, Yes!

I'm up with the programme me, I rub two IPads together to light my fires.

You are not on your own. I used to think an MP3 was a nightbus!

    Isn't it?
  • I'm very technology focused.

I've an Android phone, am constantly using Ebay and always looking for things to make my life easier, for example have Philips Hue lightbulbs which I operate with my phone and can be turned on when I'm out plus I've the Hive Heating system so can operate the heating without getting off my arse (Plus it saves me a ton of money)

  • @AFKABartram totally in your camp mate, I've got a iphone and my 9 yr old and 6 yr old use it more than me and understand it better. They've downloaded apps onto it.

I'm on twitter (but refuse to do Facebook) mainly to keep up to date with news etc and it's a good way to pass the time on the train.

  • Sounds like you got some shortcomings.
  • These wheel things are great, aren't they!
  • Summin that did get me, the last time I was back in the UK, was me brother paying for beers in the boozer by touching his phone down to the credit card machine.
  • Need to keep up with technology like cameras and computers for my job (motion graphics and video editing). So not me!

Ive got a digital watch, it has a black face with red numbers.

My great uncle had one when they first came out and was talking to my grandad after the clocks went back. He said what a pain it was changing the time and that next year he would just take the batteries out for an hour.

I'm like you too AFKA, this is the only social media site (other than occasionally the welling forum) I'm on. Don't even know what Siri or Kodi are, my 7 year old can navigate her way round the sky box quicker than I can and I drive a 50 year old car.

Hate it when people dig up old threads from years ago just to embarrass people, oh hold on..........

I was introduced to that only last week and now have my debit card 'saved' on my phone !

  • You cannot have reached your sizeable age having only used a cash point half a dozen times, I'm just not having it.
And as for the rest, don't you work in IT?

I've got that set up on my phone but I don't dare to use it. Reckon I'd look a right prat if I did it wrong.
  • A mod will be along in a minute declaring no more new technology threads and asking that you use the existing threads until something major happens.....

That so made me laugh - I'm exactly the same!!
  • I think all this technology is amazing. I mean, remember those times when you used to suffer for days with a common cold but now thanks to....oh....
  • I love technology but do find I'm no longer using all the cool features of the stuff I buy.

Surprised at some of the comments on here tbh
  • You can go into overkill I believe. If you're like @ForeverAddickted and make use of it all then fair play. I tend to pick and choose.

I'm not interested in wearable tech telling me how many steps I've done for example. I don't own my own house so aren't going to be setting up some smart home with a built in entertainment system.

The only time I want to have a better feel for technology, is more about my computer skills in the workplace. I've been in phone sales for 10 years now, my excel knowledge is shite

Haha same, my mates used it and says it's really unnatural when you're at the till and the shop assistant says "that's £5 please" and then you say "yeah sure" and get your phone out and messing around on it.

Handy for apps like the train line and booking tickets quickly though.

I'm with you on this AFKA.
    Just don't visit Japan.
I imagine your head may explode when you go to your first Japanese toilet!

  • I'm amazed @AFKABartram. If nothing else, it is making feel a few years younger today. The only thing I've really rejected is computer games. Having conquered Sonic the Hedgehog 20+ years ago, I've never played a game since.

I'm most curious about the fact that you've only used a cash dispenser a handful of times. I can only assume that you robbed a bank and keep the money under mattress.
