Tommy Robinson quits the EDL

He says they no longer represent his views. He was the public face and despises far right extremism & the EDL was formed to combat Islamic extremism & to support the British forces.

He wants change to come from dialect not standing on street corners. He has a problem with extremism.

Good for him. A courageous thing to do.

Good luck with this one CE

  • "He says they no longer represent his views."

Hopefully Miliband will follow his lead!
  • It's a very significant move in terms of British "politics" and worth discussing, if everyone can keep it civil.
  • Ultimatum by Simon Kernick - only a silly fictional little novel for the train journey but surprised me a bit by what might be possible.
  • Why, what might be possible?
  • Will be interesting to see what his next move is
  • I'd say well done to anyone who changed their ways for the better.
  • Probably won't be the end for the EDL. Depends if they unite behind a new (likely worse) leader, or split into minor groups.

However, it's interesting that he claims not to hate Muslims when he's called Islam a disease in the past....

If he honestly does turn around and work positively with groups to help them be more accepting of each other and combine against the terrorist groups that both Muslims and others hate, i'll respect him.
  • Just heard a commentator on Radio 5 comparing this to ETA and the IRA renouncing voilence and giving up their arms! Hardly. Tommy Robinson and that other Luton Thicko are deluding themselves. A bit of PR methinks. No-one will take them seriously from here whatever they do.
  • Says he was unable to control the more violent elements of the EDL and the more extreme views of some members which is not what he started out to achieve.

Taking it a face value. Fair play to him.

    THE THREAT

8am: an explosion blasts through a cafe in Central London.

    THE ULTIMATUM

Minutes later, a call from an unknown terror group warns that a far greater attack will be launched in

    12 hours' time.

    THE PRISONER

William Garrett, AKA Fox, is awaiting trial for mass murder. He claims he can name the bombers. But only at a price.

    THE CLOCK IS TICKING

It's a terrifying race against time for DI Mike Bolt and DC Tina Boyd as they chase their targets across the city in a desperate bid to stop a major atrocity - before it's too late ...

    Go on, PL54. Your point?
  • Will give him more time for his archaeology.
  • Or his gay rights indiepop
  • His next step is the important one.
  • It's a very significant move in terms of British "politics" and worth discussing, if everyone can keep it civil.

With respect CE, its not really politics as he and the EDL has nothing to do with politics in the same way other political party's do. He and the group were a 'protest street movement'.
Other than that I agree with you.

    Of course it's politics.

Politics is not confined to the Palace of Westminster.

I understand what you're saying. That's why I said "politics" in inverted commas.
  • It's politics. With a capital P and a full stop.

Basically this. Everything is politics in some way. I hope this leads to a decrease in right-wing extremism and therefore less baiting from UKIP + Conservatives to win those votes. But its doubtful.

It is possible to change and renounce views once held dear. Ray Hill, Bernard O'Mahoney and Matthew Collins were once active in the world of far-right 'street protests' yet all three became sickened and disillusioned with the lives of hate they were living. Both Hill and Collins went onto work with Searchlight to reveal and expose the truth about the activities of parties and persons on the far-right.

Whether Robinson does something similar or just fades into the background to live a quiet life remains to be seen.

On a personal note I've renounced some views I had when I was younger and cringe at the memory of my flirtation with the Socialist Worker Party. You live and learn.

I think he will carry on with what he believes. He is against Islamic Extremism and my guess is that he will keep this view. He doesn't like the racists that follow the EDL and as much as he has tried to distance the group with it they still attract some racists. He didnt form the the EDL with that.
  • That was always going to be the problem SE9. I'm not a racist but am firmly against Islamic extremism but would never dream of getting involved with the EDL because of the peripheral racism brought to it by ignorant pricks who equated 'anti-Islamic extremism' with anti-Asian.
  • Time will tell.

He'll either seek to further his political crusade more legitimately, or he'll chase the coin as a Dougie Brimson-style social commentator, popping up on everything from Newsnight to This Morning every time there is some terrorist incident.

As for EDL, it will probably take the NF and BNP routes of fading away, only to be replaced in 2-3 years by some other fad angry mob. EDL were relatively successful in terms of creating a known 'brand' in a short space of timeand tapping into a segment of society we know exists, has always existed. However, when its main aspect is centered around boozed up angry lads singing No Surrender, its only ever going to have a limited shelf life.

Personally i thought people like him get a kick out of the fame and noteriety, but maybe he is smarter than i give him credit for. The cynic in me though says if he was going to step out of it for the reasons he stated, then he would have done so a while ago because from what i can see, it hasn't really changed from the start, only got bigger.

No point - read the book, no biggy and as I said a simple silly story but left me thinking.

  • The EDL are just like any other extremist organization, they have a full hatread of Islam however I do support them fighting against Islam extremisum that we have in this Country. We should deport these people.
