  • Yes its actually tonight and they have had a really good first half  in the San Siro. Goal-less but plenty of chances at both ends. Viktorka are putting in one of their nerveless ooo-the-effing-ell-are-yoo performances and nearly scored after just two minutes. Ibrahimovic looks very dangerous, and Marek Cech has made two brilliant saves to deny him, but as I know him the longer it goes on without him getting somewhere, the more he gets the hump and fades out of it. Its a big ask second half, but once again Viktorka have exceeded all expectations
  • Undone by as harsh a penalty award as you will see all season
  • Ended 2-0, second goal was class and deflated them but they never caved in, and Lubos is looking forward to the return game.
  • How do you pronounce Plzen - it doesn't exactly roll off the tongue
  • How do you pronounce Plzen - it doesn't exactly roll off the tongue
Well in German it is written Pilsen, if that helps. It's where Pilsner beers originate from. Especially the king of them all, Pilsner Urquell.

Thank you for that - I wouldn't have guessed. It might be decent beer, but I am not sure Urquell is the king of all beers. I think this needs a separate thread.
  • Tonight they are in the Nou Camp....

Some stats form the Czech web site about the financial mis-match

Annual budget Barcelona : 430,000,000 euros
    Annual budget Viktoria:         3,420,000 euros

Most expensive player Barcelona: Lionel Messi, 100,000,000 euros
Most expensive player Viktoria: Daniel Kolar,         1,700,000 euros

On the other hand, these big boys rarely bring more than about 1,000 to away UCL games here. Tonight Viktoria are taking 5,000 to the Nou Camp.

3 goal or less defeat will be a result as that should keep their goal difference better than the Belorussians, their competitor for third spot.

Wish them luck, they will need some. I'll be following it on TV, golden brew at hand, natch...

  • PA, your post about them being good on their travels made me put a double on my pools coupon and accumulator. Barca or draw.
  • #LargeAddick

Am I the only one who every time I see the thread title think it's about the exploits of some Eastern European super model ?

    Basically yes...

Oooof..they are not that good, a draw at the Nou Camp is a huge ask. 1-0 down on the half hour mark.
  • Made it to half time without conceding more, and have got their game together nicely after a shaky start. But Messi smacked the post with a free kick with the last kick of the half, and sometimes it seems like they have two more players on the pitch than Viktoria, the technique and movement is simply awesome.
  • Ended 2-0, good result. Possession 72-28% !!!
  • Ended 2-0, good result. Possession 72-28% !!!
Absolutely no shame in that, Barce averaged 72% possession in all their games last season.
  • Tonight the return game at "home" - in Prague - against Barca.

No chance of tickets for me, raging black market.

Not good that BATE Borisov held Milan. Muppets. Milan, I mean
  • Bah! Referees. Viktorka were the better side for the first 20 minutes, and should have gone ahead from  a one on one. But the ref had already given an alarming number of dodgy decisions, including booking a Viktorka player who accidently ran into him. So when a Barca player got his legs clipped in the box, this joker pulls out a red card (rather than the yellow that was deserved) thus ending the game as a contest and short-changing all the people who paid perhaps a week's wage to see the game.

I accept that refs miss things but deliberate decisions like this... we all deserve better.
  • Messi's fourth hat trick of the season. Unbelievable

Had them on Eurosport duty again last night. Match updates archive including a link to my full report above.

Apparently (unbelievably) there some stick floating about in Spain because he hadn't scored in 3 games.

Then he hits hat-tricks in the next 2.

    Greedy sod.

Out of interest Liam, did you see that penalty trip as a clear goal scoring opp? Trouble is of course, its a judgement call at any time. But I do not think he was shaping to shoot nor was he one-on -one.

    Ah well...

  • Sorry for no immediate reply, the thread kinda sunk without trace for 3 weeks with no CL action. From what I rmeember of the game and of the incident, it was definitely one of those instances that seemed to rely on how close to the goal it was rather than the other important factors of what makes a goalscoring opp as you said.

The fact it had to be given by the assistant when the referee was there says it all.

But the reason I tracked this thread down was of course because of last night's first CL win for Plzen at BATE.
  • Yep, missed the action, being out on the piss on business in Vienna. But that's the result they wanted. Unless BATE cause a major upset by winning at the Nou Camp, Plzen will be in the Europa League, and the great adventure continues. Hopefully, they'll draw Manchester City :-)
  • Nice coupon buster tonight.

2-0 down to Milan and came back to draw 2-2.
  • I missed it, my Czech TV signal has been knocked out, and I thought it was tonight. Just caught up with it in the papers. They were actually 2-0 down on 89 minutes.

They played in Prague again (filled the place), and afterwards their captain Pavel Horvath announced that the team bus back to Plzen would be stopping to pick up a large amount of beer to be consumed on the journey. Imagine if they did that in Britain, the entire bus would be impounded:-)

So the adventure continues in the Spring with the Europa League, and I fancy some big name is going to be scalped !

  • Currently 1-0 up against Schalke 04 in the Europa League last 32.
  • Got them in one of my accys
  • Yep, just got in for half time. Lots of talk beforehand that they might be a spent force, lost a star midfielder to Wolfsburg while another player failed a dope test and was sacked. And their manager is being courted by Slovakia to manage the national side.

But you write off Viktorka at your peril

For some reason I've only just caught up with this thread.

I clicked on it hoping to see some east European porn.

How very disappoiting to discover that it's about some poxy football team. I had this wonderful fantasy in my mind of what Viktoria looked like, too.

Sorry, Prague. There's always someone who will lower the tone. And over the course of a fairly long life, all those who know old Incorruptible (ironic name, if ever there was one) have grown accustomed to it being me!
  • Wish I had a TV now!
