Blackburn v Charlton | Sat 03 Aug 2019 | 3pm KO | Official Match Thread

Well, here we go. Join us for the match thread as the new season gets underway. Teams and lead-up news as it happens, followed by all the action.

Personally, I'm not sure what to expect. We're woefully underpowered, but I suppose anything can happen.

Up the Addicks!

Dropped two places already... #AnnounceRelegation #BowyerOut!!
  • From the BBC:
Blackburn are without defender Derrick Williams because of a calf injury.

Sam Hart, Jacob Davenport and Dominic Samuel are also set to miss out but Christian Walton, Tosin Adarabioyo, Bradley Johnson and Stewart Downing could make their debuts and Sam Gallagher is set for a second debut.

Charlton Athletic have Chuks Aneke and Lewis Page out with hamstring problems.

  • Also from the BBC:

    • Blackburn have won their previous three home league matches against Charlton without conceding a single goal.
    • Charlton have won only one of their past eight games against Blackburn in all competitions (W1 D1 L6), though that win was in Lee Bowyer's only game in charge against Rovers in April 2018.
    • Blackburn are winless on the opening day in each of the past eight seasons (W0 D4 L4), since a 1-0 victory over Everton in August 2010.
    • Charlton have won just one of their 13 most recent away league games played on the opening day of the season (W1 D3 L9), a 3-1 win at Sunderland in August 2005.
    • Blackburn manager Tony Mowbray has won just one of his nine league games on the opening day of a season (W1 D2 L6), leading Coventry City to a 2-0 win against Wigan Athletic in 2015-16.
    • Charlton manager Lee Bowyer led the Addicks to 30 wins in all competitions last season - they've only won more in two previous campaigns, 32 in 1980-81 and 33 in 2011-12.
  • Yup is the team we expected:

    Phillips
    Dijksteel | Lockyer | Pearce | Sarr | Purrington
    Lapslie | Williams | Pratley | Forster-Caskey
    Taylor
  • 2 or 3-0 loss based on that team.
  • All of the stats above mean a 0-0 draw is on the cards

Thanks for putting the team up properly.

  • That Blackburn team doesnt overly scare me!!

Dack is their main threat but none of them really have that much pace!!

In 1938, when we finished fourth in the top tier (then called Division One) we only won 16 matches (out of 42).
  • Burn that team with fire

    Would take that
  • Hope to be proven wrong, and no disrespect to the players who I am sure Bowyer and Jackson will have up for it, but that first XI has to be one of the weakest in the league. Such a horrible midfield.
  • I'm hoping that Dick of steel starting means he is going no where.

Wonder if someone like Williams or JFC will play just behind Taylor rather than that being such a flat midfield
  • Glad Dijksteel is starting. Fingers crossed.

  • That, inevitably, is a significantly weaker team than the Wembley winning one. And we all know why. Cannot bear to watch, will stick with Test Match Special and follow this thread with trepidation. If Bow gets us anything from this game he will have enhanced his reputation already.

    Taylor
3 CB's, 2 Wing backs, diamond 4 with JFC at DM and Williams AM.

    Taylor ploughing a lone furrow.

Edit: That's my guess. But Williams more in the hole, to run beyond Taylor at times?

  • Take a point all day

    More likely

  • Least we've options from the bench this season too

Was so frustrating against Sunderland because we started so well (against expectation) yet lost because we didnt have the adequate bench

Would be surprised to see a similar start from us today only for us to sustain the performance this time with Gallagher | Bonne | Solly | Oshilaja as options to come on to do whats needed
  • From the OS:
    https://www.cafc.co.uk/news/view/5d457b9c0bf86/team-news-lockyer-handed-debut-for-addicks-season-opener-at-blackburn-rovers

Tom Lockyer will make his Addicks debut today as Charlton begin the club’s first year back in the Championship at Ewood Park against Blackburn Rovers.

Fellow summer signings Ben Amos, Deji Oshilaja, Conor Gallagher and Macauley Bonne will be available to Lee Bowyer from the bench.

The Addicks are expected to line-up in the 3-2-diamond-1 formation that Bowyer has utilised at times during pre-season.

Dillon Phillips starts in goal with Lockyer, captain Jason Pearce and Naby Sarr likely to make up a back three.

Anfernee Dijksteel and Ben Purrington, who joined the club permanently in the summer, are expected to start as wing backs.

Jake Forster-Caskey, Darren Pratley, George Lapslie and Jonny Williams may operate as a diamond in midfield behind last season’s top goalscorer Lyle Taylor.

Chuks Aneke and Lewis Page miss the game through injury with Albie Morgan, Chris Solly and Brandon Wiredu joining the new boys on the bench.

Charlton: Phillips; Lockyer, Pearce (C), Sarr; Dijksteel, Purrington; Forster-Caskey, Pratley, Lapslie, Williams; Taylor

Substitutes: Amos, Oshilaja, Gallagher, Bonne, Morgan, Solly, Wiredu

  • We need Dijksteel to pick up a minor injury in the 90th minute, just long enough to keep him out until next Friday  :)
