Thought before and afterwards Sunderland fans were great, nice to just be able to have a decent chat with the opposition without the fake tribal stuff.
Hope they go up next year just like 99 (but without us going the opposite way!)

Every single Sunderland fan I spoke to before and after the match was utter class. There is a reason why they are such a great club. Even on the tube, I spoke to a couple from Sunderland, trying to be apologetic and empathetic I suppose. The man said the best team won, and the lady kissed me on the cheek.
Made a point of talking to as many Sunderland supporters as I could after the match, told them not too worry about today and that they would smash league one next season, and get over 100 points.
Probably not what they wanted to hear right now, but there is a mutual respect I hope between Charlton and Sunderland fans.
‘Well done deserved the win but in the cruelest way for us (other than pens again! ) Hopefully Roland will buy a few players to help you stay up. God knows what the future holds for us - to say I am gutted is an understatement. However you did deserve it in the day....Not going to lie, that was worse than 98’
Found them to be pretty arrogant and cocky early today...One pointed to me and said....look its Charlton's one and only fan. Best team won a scrappy final.

Yeah I shook hands with him, felt a bit sorry for him bless him, but nice lad to be doing that.
Testament that both teams have quality fans that there is a thread like this on both fans sites. Chatted to lots pre game and was taking quite a lot of pre match photos for them while I was waiting for family to show up. All a credit to their club. It's safe to say a defeat like that could have turned other clubs' fans nasty and they never did. Fair play. Good luck to them next year.
Yeah all Sunderland fans seemed really nice pre-game, only funny moment was post game there was some Charlton fans celebrating over the little walk way to the Green Man post game with some Sunderland fans walking underneath, and one tried to lob a can of beer, it hit the railing and just spilt all over himself.
Obviously I wanted Charlton to win but Sunderland are a club that is bigger than us and I don’t care admitting that. Always liked them, working class ordinarily people who love their club. Glad we won but I feel for them. Someone has to win , it was us today but they will be back, division three football is not their natural level. Im rambling and pissed. Both sets of supporters a credit to sport
To a man and a woman, Sunderland were pure and utter class.
I spoke to several before the match, and they knew enough about Duchatelet to empathise. And one of them - a really drunk dude - got in a singing shout-off with me, and immediately offered me a beer after, wishing us all the best!
And after, the first thing was exiting the stadium, we applauded their fans who stuck around and I don't think anyone on the walk down didn't do so. And they felt the pain, and we knew, and we did our best in our elation to give a few words of comfort.
And speaking to them on the walk back to the tube, every single one congratulated us as the better team on the day, and wished us all the best going forward.
Will always rather be a Mackem than a Geordie. Always.
I'd love to agree however we had a lovely chap on our coach with his dad who had downs, a little bit of banter as we were stopped unbelievably right in the middle of the Sunderland fan park. Started with him booing them and them giving him the finger and ended with them throwing smoke bombs and beers at the windows nearly putting them through.
The worst part was our coach was predominantly over 65s, women and children, hardly a bunch of burly pissed up men. I thought they were a bunch of vile wankers after that.
Loads of Sunderland jumped on the tube at Kings Cross, very noisy and made my daughter very scared (she’s 9 and was in tears), as we got off at Wembley Park, on of their fans told her they’re a nice bunch really and gave her £20! What to great gesture and what a nice fella.

You must have been near us. I saw that. What a great young lad. Saw that and my tears flowed as nearby there were adults in tears. That's what football does to you. It gets you to the heart.
