I couldn't do that myself, clap Charlton off yes, but not watch the other team celebrating and parading the trophy about, and then you'd be stuck with all their fans leaving the same time as you as well.
Being an old git there have been many occasions where Charlton and Sunderland have interacted, and indeed historically some very interesting links.
Sunderland are a massive club with a great and proud tradition and history, and it is significant that they have a solid identity being a one city club.
Sunderland fans, indeed many non-London based fans sometimes struggle to identify and differentiate London clubs.
Our origins are as humble as they come. In a heavily industrialised part of London, where gigantic ships propellors were made, where docks operated, where a huge munitions factory existed, where engineering was very much a local industry, where the Army were garrisoned, a group of 15 year old boys met up in the meanest of mean streets that could be found anywhere in Britain and they formed our club.
No church involvement, no benevolent local businesses, no factory owners creating a works team, and certainly no speculators like those who founded Crystal Palace and Chelsea in the same year hoping to cash in on the football craze and exploit already existing infrastructure.
Perhaps the only difference between the origins of Sunderland and Charlton was that there were no natural resources locally like coal to help create a community, but both clubs in their own way were tied to the sea and related industries.
The most obvious similarity are of course that Sunderland and Charlton are football clubs, sporting institutions, and the reaction ought to be thank god for that, who would everybody play if we didn't have and indeed cherish each other?
Sunderland fans are overwhelmingly cool and gracious in my experience. They get it. They know that the SKY dream future of Manchester City playing Manchester City reserves for eternity is not right. They know that the glorious variety of our football clubs is to be celebrated.
In one way no club is 'big time' or 'small time'. To a Hartlepool fan or a Leyton Orient fan, to a Sunderland fan and to a Charlton fan their affection for their own clubs is the brightest star in the galaxy of football, and to those true fans none of those clubs are either big time or small time.
They are a map of, and a force that defines the community they are a part of.

Sunday’s game will all be about what mind set we have as a team and can we manage the big game atmosphere. Sunderland have more experience in that department than we do, especially with the crowds they get and the recent visit to Wembley. I’m not expecting an easy win or even a win at all.

I’ve not stayed close to it if I’m honest and I’m not an avid reader of our own board.
From what I’ve heard we’re a couple of thousand from selling out but ive not fact checked that at all.
I predict there’ll be a last minute flurry though, people pissing and moaning about train/hotel expense. They’ll all cave in as the clock ticks down.

Whatever happens I hope it isn’t that tense! I’d dread penalties. Not so much 98, I think the Checkatrade final will be in the minds of our players if it comes to that.
I think our best chance is in normal time. If it goes beyond that I think Charlton will do it.
In terms of North East clubs and Wembley, I can’t think of anything. Although I was born in the late 80s so there’s a chunk of that time that I’m not terribly familiar with.

That was a game to end all games. Had a laugh with a great group of your fans in a pub before the game and you were certainly favourites. Ran into them on leaving the ground and they thought we were going to take the piss, but the truth was that we knew exactly what they had gone through - as so had we.
Always had an interest and respect for your club and supporters since then, and wish you all the best for automatic for next season!

You are mostly very confident I see. I'd say its a pure 50/50. No favourite at all.
We go into it ok-ish. Obviously the season end was flat but beating what many seemed to think was an unbeatable (for us) Portsmouth has given us a boost. I think the poor season end was overplayed, with the Southend on last day especially being a nothing game for us.
We won't have Mcgeady of course and that is a blow. He might make the bench but he hasn't trained for a month and in the minutes he has played with the fractured foot, he's looked understandably off the pace.
But I'm still reasonably confident. Despite what some Sunderland fans think, personally I think this squad has good mental strength. The defense has been ok and although we are not high goalscoring, we can get one of two.
I think we will set up for a tight game. Can't see anything like a 3-3. Think your best opportunity against us is height and pace.
Despite all the talk of biggest budget in the league when you analyse our squad it's slow and small.
On the crowd front we are not convinced we will sell out. The checkatrade final seems to have blown everyone out in several ways. Money seems to be the main issue, and having already been there only weeks ago, there is not the same motivation to push the boat out again. It's only Tuesday though, they might have been sold by the end of the week. I'm not expecting the Trafalgar Square display again as many more are there and back in a day to save money. What it might help with though is the atmosphere, with everyone being completely ruined by time CT kicked off from the day before.
There won't be any trouble anyhow and there seems to be good relations between the two sets of fans.
Even though it's Charlton and we can never take anything for granted, my inner belief was building a real head of steam until last Friday. On the plus side we did enough and guts'd our way through, but Donny did a real number on us and sowed the seeds of doubt in my mind especially if as likely Jack Ross was paying attention.
