Open night in the pub

Don't just cover stuff.
Do your own songs.
If all you can do is pallid copies of standards why bother?

Comments

  • Did you sing Minute By Minute by The Doobie brothers?
  • No....
Telegraph Road by Dire Straits. All 15 mins of it.
  • I did my 23 minute Kim Grant medley, seemed to go down quite well if I say so myself.
  • A thread iv waited years to be started, and now it's here. Disagree, I love a tune I know, rather than some shit, a beardy long haired yoof has written in his bedroom.

I love live music. It's just dispiriting to hear open mic nights where awful covers are done by people who can't sing or play above a very low level.

Low level is where people get started.

  • Out of interest where were you? I've done a few myself and nearly always play my own material but the problem you have is no one knows it and you need people to hear your songs more than once so they get to know them. Covers will often go down better for that very reason as people at least know the song, even if they've not heard my somewhere between folk and punk approach to it.

Sorry, I was just having some fun in the pub and i know I'm a bad guitarist and worse singer. It's open night, what can you expect.

TBH you shouting "Oh Jeremy Corbyn" (out of tune) all the way through my set didn't help

Not those Billy Bragg covers again, Henry!!
  • Think anyone with the balls/passion to get up and perform in public is worthy of a great deal of respect, their own composition or someone else's.

If not for you - Dylan

The night they drove old dixie down - the band

Sweet Home Alabama (acoustic version is great)

Agreed. Those that I have done have been with musicians of varying quality. The common theme is that everybody is encouraged.
  • I tend to do some open mics to promote my music on Spotify etc. But I always do some covers and some originals. But with the covers, I always do my own version and not direct covers, something they could attach to but understand it's my own variation. Always fun to meet like minded locals.

If anyone wants to come down, I tend to do some in Sidcup and Blackheath more than others.

    This.

Anyway, it's about keeping music a living breathing thing.

Whether it's good or bad, my mantra is ....... "it's Live Music, FFS!"

  • Pretty girl on the hood of a Cadillac, yeah....
She's broken down on freeway nine
I take a look and get her engine started
I leave her purring and I roll on by... Bye bye

Free love on the free love freeway
The love is free and the freeway's long...
I got some hot love on the hot-love highway
I ain't going home cos' my baby's gone
    She's gone...

A little while later, see a senorita
She's caught a flat trying to make it home
She says "Por favor, can you pump me up?"
I say "Muchos gracias, adios. Bye Bye."

Free love on the free-love freeway
The love is free and the freeway's long
I got some hot love on the hot-love highway
Ain't going home cause my baby's gone
    She's gone...

Down the road, I see a cowboy crying
"Hey buddy, what can I do?"
He says "I lead a good life, had about a thousand women."
I said "Why the tears?", he says "cause none of them was you."

And free music at that! Pubs have it easy and a lot don't even offer a drink for your performance anymore.

Boring isn't it, bumping an old thread on a football forum just to make some David Brent jokes. Not for Chizz, he likes it.
