Unbelievably sad. Was on SSN a few days before he became unwell talking about looking forward to the world cup and who he would have in his team. 2 weeks later he's gone.
Had struggles in his later life but always came across with dignity and responsibility.
In an era when many pundits want to outdo eachother with character assassinations and shock statements Ray had a child-like enthusiasm that came through, always speaking about the game as if any level of football was between mates over the park.
Absolutely gutted. So sad to learn of his passing today. Seemed a real gentleman and as much as he may have been made fun of with his “my word, that young man is impressive” sayings, he was a football man, and one that is going to be sorely missed.
61 years old is no age for anyone. But life throws things at us sometimes that makes us realise once again how precious and short life really is.

He came across as a lovely man. I liked the calm way he went about his punditry. To many pundits like to hear the sound of their own voice and only theirs. He never came across that way.RIP.
RIP Ray Wilkins. When he was at Chelsea I thought they had two players called Wilkins. Ray and Butch. When we were youngsters he was always one of the players that everyone seemed to recognise.
Played in the first match I ever saw Chelsea v Fulham, Boxing Day 1976. A Christmas present from my Dad who had no interest in football but just took us to the game. Just like Exiled Addict his death will really hit you if you were a kid in the late 70s and early 80s. Felt the same about Cyril Regis an icon of my youth passes and it makes you feel very mortal.

Watching him on the old Big Match's on BT Sport highlighted what a great player he was from a young age.
