As we get older the decision every individual has to make is when it is the right time to retire.
I turned 70 in February and I was pretty sure when I was 40 that I would retire at 60. At 50 I thought the same and at 60 I was motivated to carry on. At 70 I still feel very self-motivated to achieve things. Of course having good health is pivotal to what we all decide to do in our careers but having survived cancer and a heart attack it does give you a different perspective on life. Many people of course can’t afford to retire as we live in an era beset with high mortgage repayments and rents, excessive energy costs, a cost of living crisis and the highest tax levels for decades.
I have been very lucky in my career in football to have been involved in 4 promotions and 2 League Championship wins but more than that I look back at the reconstruction of The Valley and the Kuflink Stadium with considerable pride.
Co-founding an Electric Vehicle Charging business (Virtus Energy Ltd) which is growing following its’ acquisition by RSK has been a real buzz and in my role as Executive Vice Chairman of Millwall Community Trust I am at the very heart of an organisation that is doing so much to positively affect the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in Lewisham and Southwark and I work with some brilliant and inspirational people.
I have a personal bucket list and sooner or later I have a decision to make as we all do but who knows when the right time is to retire.
All advice is welcomed particularly from people who have retired or are currently deciding when to retire!!!
Still think he was setting his sight on a role back helping us. Think that ship may well have finally sailed now sadly, hence his statement? Did great service to all the clubs he worked for.
Life is sometimes about timing - much of which is out of our contract PV will always remembered for the many great things he did at CAFC He was a big part of probably the best part of our recent history It’s a shame things got bad between him and Richard Murray - but we move onto a new and hopefully long overdue better chapter in our history. Either way I wish you well PV
Always hoped Peter would return to Charlton at some point in some capacity but it seems that now not going to happen. I’m not one for going back on what was but PV was so instrumental in what was achieved both on the pitch and off it. I think had he been involved at any point since he left, we as a club would be better off than we are now. I’d hesitate to offer advice to Peter but as someone who has retired, apart from everyone is different. Not having a focus for some people is torture but for others (like me) having time at home and being able to help out with grandkids is more than I need. Whatever he decides I hope it works out well. Not many football club CEO’s have the fondness with which he is regarded by the fans as Peter. Bit of a ledge really.
52 and aiming to retire at 60 - would retire tomorrow if money wasn't an issue - do a job that i don't love and has become increasingly more hassle and have plenty of hobbies i'd love to be doing instead - different for PV - guess he's one of the few who's work is something they enjoy
What a guy he was…..especially during our Premiership days and lead up to promotion. First one in on match day mornings and just about last to leave (around 8.00 am I was once told)…..he had his foot in every door and knew the match day workings in every department from start to finish, as well as being on first name terms with many of the staff on the day. We’ve never had a guy like him at the helm before or since …….as far as I know anyway. It used to make my skin crawl when the likes of Meire used to rock up (done up to the eyeballs), at around 1.00pm…..shocking example to all concerned! 😠

Great with the redevelopment of the valley. I wouldn't be too proud of the stand at the kuflink/stone bridge road ground. That stand is shocking architecturally though the facilities are good. Used to be rusty old roof and a terrace with no facilities apart from a tea hut and an always flooded urinals.

That thick kid is properly dyslexic and being entirely sensible to spell it like it sounds and hope for the best. Americans consciously altered spellings to make it easier for immigrants to spell properly - again sensible. As we all know, Albert Einstein was dyslexic and (perhaps not despite that, but because of that) made a massive contribution to the advancement of human knowledge. You presumably aren’t dyslexic and gave CharltonLife 21 discussions including the groundbreaking ‘worst sports kit’ and the intriguing but ultimately equally disappointing ‘Easter would ya’.
Retired at 66 a couple of years ago and made a list of things I could do if I got bored… totally unnecessary as there are always things to do or people to see. Enjoy your retirement and thanks for the good times.

I know it’s a tired old cliche but I really don’t know how I found time to go to work. My time is completely filled with things of which 95% I enjoy doing. Never watch daytime tv. Enjoy my home, garden, my children and grandchildren, getting out and about and definitely not the grind of daily work life. I accept it’s not for everyone but I’m generally like a pig in shit. 👍
