If Serbia stay at a draw and Ireland win, Ireland would win the group

It's based on GD isn't it? Serbia have better GD.

Serbia will win the group on GD as it stands

Serbia are 1-0 up now anyway.

Who would finish bottom out of the 2nd placed teams.

    Greece?
    Slovakia

Yeah it's a bit confusing but 90% sure it's Slovakia missing out as it stands.

There's still games to play tomorrow so it complicates it.

As i understand it Slovakia's only hope is Wales equalising in the next few minutes.

What if Greece lose - they only have 16 points!

5 minutes - i reckon Wales will have two chances in those 5 mins. Not saying they will score - :)

What if Greece lose - they only have 16 points!

They are playing Gibraltar who will definitely finish bottom of the group so that result will not count towards the second place table. In the unlikely event that the Greeks didn't beat Gibraltar they can be overtaken in their own group by Bosnia and Herzegovina who would then make the playoffs but it won't help Slovakia.

Wales trying to be too sure - giving defenders time to get on them.

The loss will be against the sixth placed team in their group and so won't count against their points total towards play-off qualification.

Greece will have 13 and Slovakia will have 12.

HOWEVER, if Bosnia beat Estonia while Greece fail to win against Gibraltar then Greece will finish third in their group and Bosnia will be the unlucky ninth team who miss out. (Bosnia would have only 11 points towards play-offs in that situation).

That free kick was something else.

Didn't we beat Gibraltar a couple of seasons ago?

Bosnia cannot go through in any way at all. That's Slovakia's last hope.

    Hard fought win.

Wales lacked that quality without Bale. Enjoyed the second half for the tension rather than the quality.

Unlucky to lose Bale for these matches, but Wales massively overachieved in the Euros, and this is the flipside.

    Is the playoff draw seeded?
  • Options
yes, using FIFA rankings - top four are seeds and will play an unseeded side. Important for Northern Ireland!

I thought the seeds were the top four Play-Off teams?

So based on the above would be: Portugal | Italy | Denmark | Croatia?

Really glad that the Republic of Ireland won...

Means we wont have to endure the BBC lovefest that they had during Euro 2016 for Wales, plus its karma for the Welsh celebrations when England went out!!

I'm assuming Northern Ireland will prefer Denmark!

no Bale .. no play off place .. be interesting if the north draw the south in the play offs .. but it seems that the seedings will prevent this

Five teams are guaranteed play-off spots:

Italy, Denmark, Croatia, Northern Ireland and Rep. Ireland...

One spot will be given to the runners up of Group A:
France and Sweden need to decide who will finish first and second in their group (the Netherlands are effectively eliminated).
France play at home to Belarus and Sweden play away at the Netherlands. France are one point ahead of Sweden with a worse goal difference.

One spot will be given to the runners up of Group B:
Switzerland and Portugal also need to decide who will first and second in their group.
Switzerland travel to Portugal for the last game. Only a win for Portugal is enough to qualify. Switzerland are three points ahead of Portugal with a worse goal difference.

The last spot will be filled by Greece or Slovakia. If Greece finish second in their group, they will qualify for the play-offs. If Bosnia finish second ahead of Greece then Slovakia will beat Bosnia to the last play-off place based on results against teams who didn't finish sixth.
Greece are at home to Gibraltar and Bosnia are away at Estonia. Greece are two points ahead of Bosnia with a worse goal difference.

So is there a scenario where Northen Ireland could be seeded? Say if Switzerland come second. I think they are above the Republic and Greece in the FIFA rankings.

Edit: Just checked - no there isn't - both Republic and Northern Ireland will be unseeded teams
