CL's Favourite Albums: Nevermind vs Exile on Main St.

These are obviously two very different records. Nevermind paved the way for a number of "alternative" artists to achieve mainstream success (knocking Michael Jackson off of the top of the U.S. Billboard 200 in the process). It seems to me that Exile came in as rock music (as well as the Stones themselves) as it was known at the time, was in transition.

I threw in the quotations when describing Nevermind as alternative because I think it's very accessible and quite poppy. Kurt Cobain was known to say that he wanted his songs to be simple, almost like children's songs. It's definitely a collection of very catchy, melodic songs and was the gateway for me to bands like Sonic Youth and The Pixies.

Up until Friday, I had never listened to Exile on Main St. I've now listened to it three times and found it to be thoroughly enjoyable. Personally, seeing the heavy influences of roots music, country blues and gospel as well as the rawness of the finished product makes it a very pleasing album to listen to. My personal favourites were All Down the Line, Sweet Virginia and Ventilator Blues.

So, which do you prefer? Please feel free to add any personal stories linked to the albums or any facts/ memories you might have.

Would also be interested to hear accounts form our very own music analysts out there, particularly for Exile as it's an album I'm a lot less familiar with.

Easy easy easy ... Nevermind by a mile.

Love almost every track but Smells Like Teen Spirit puts it to a level above. Stunning track.

I should add that Nevermind is one of my all time favourites and I'm actually asking myself why it wasn't in my initial top 5. It's difficult to listen to an album for the first time and try to match it up against a long standing favourite that means so much, so it was really always going to be Nevermind for me.

Easy for me, Exile. Nevermind to me is one of those albums we are all "supposto" love and call great, but which in reality was more of an important album than a great one. Exile was just great. And is actually not all that well known.

Exile for me too. Both great, great albums but that was the Stones at their peak, which means almost untouchable.

To think they released Sticky Fingers and Exile within 12 months of each other. THAT's amazing.

Lol. What a weird, topsy turvy world that would be  . The way I've listed the album tracks on my PC doesn't seem to translate well on my phone and might be jumbled on other people's mobile devices too.

Nevermind. I was 17 when Nirvana happened and they were the band of my late teenage years.

It's a bit like comparing apples and magnets. I could buy the Pet Sounds / Revolver choice but these are two very different albums separated by years.

    Having said that - Nevermind

The 20 year gap makes the comparison trickier, but Nevermind has 'Teen Spirit' and for that alone is the winner.

Nevermind. When I first properly heard Smells Like Teen Spirit, it just... fit, if that makes sense. I was coming into my teenage years, and it's resonated with me since. Exile is class, absolutely, but it's shaded by Nevermind for me. The gap between them does make it hard to compare, though.

And although they released some good music subsequently they never reached those peaks again. I find it hard to articulate why an album like Goats Head Soup is not at the same level, but it doesn't come close.

Hard to believe that had he lived, Kurt Cobain would be 50.

Completely agree. There may be some odd match ups and it won't be possible to compare. The idea will be to select your favourite of the two if you're able to separate them.

Nevermind by a distance, I fear for Mick and the boys with this match up.

    Good points.

Exile was an album that was made in a week and then released and not really noticed. Nevermind was considered a game changer.

So maybe a better comparison would be...

Nevermind v. The Clash's first album?

Not sure where you getting your info from @NapaAddick but Exile wasnt made in a week, nothing like it. The Stones were holed up in the south of France for months making it and later mixing it. It was more like two years than a week.

And it was number 1 in the UK and the US so hardly never noticed. The Stones were the biggest band in the world at the time.

    Anyway, back to the question.

Exile. It's maybe too long but it has brilliant tracks throughout.

Nevermind was groundbreaking for many but for me after a few songs it gets very samey " here's a loud bit, now here's a quiet bit".

The Stones in period were at their best playing the type of music I love so only one winner for me. Exile.

Exile for me is the better album, but nevermind has better singles, but more filler.

    I'll go with Exile.

(I just missed the boat with nirvana, and got into them about the same time as the stones)

Never got the American Nirvana. Loved the original British band.

Exile is a classic, one of my all time favourites. So it's the Stones for me.

well lithium is one of my favourite tracks and Nevermind was one of my first cassettes as a kid with the lyrics to smells like teen spirit printed on the tape "Oh well, whatever, Nevermind"

Love both, hard to pick. In Utero is better than Nevermind though.

    LOL.
Well, I agree Rainbow Chaser is a classic.
    It's also nuts.

I'm a big Stones fan but Exile is not one of my favourites; I prefer Beggars Banquet, Sticky Fingers and Let It Bleed. As a single album with the best of the tracks it would have been a classic but a few of the songs are forgettable, others not quite up to the standard I'd expect from the Stones at their peak, and I consider that lineup with Mick Taylor to be their best.

I reckon this round could be swung by age: over-50s going for The Stones, under 50s mainly choosing Nirvana.

Well, I'm going to buck the trend and vote for the album that put grunge on the map and paved the way for some other great bands.

    Nevermind.

Nirvana overrated - although Nevermind is a decent album. Exile is one of the best albums made by the greatest band of all time.

So, so easy for me - Exile.

(but by the voting so far it looks like I'm backing a loser!)

Exile on Main Street. The one I always pick is my most favourite album. Wasn't also Tumbling duce the first song (& only ?) where a video produced by the band was shown instead of a 'live' appearance on Top of The Pops ? Pop Videos on main channel TV, it'll never catch on.

Nirvana, overrated, really? Please explain yourself.

Not really a massive fan of either band. Nevermind is a fantastic record and for me Exile is a slightly better than average one.

    On that Nevermind wins.

It's personal opinion, of course. For me Nirvana (like The Stone Roses) are a band that everyone is supposed to revere. But I just don't get the Emperor's New Clothes bollox.

Nirvana good, Stones the best (for me). Everything is relative as Albert would say.
