Spoke to his dad today, he (his dad) was not aware of the situation at Charlton, or who the owner was. That doesn't mean Billy doesn't know. Mentioned that Billy and his wife had just bought a house in Bradford and that shes not too happy with this move, but that Billy was out of contract and as hes turning 30 this year the 2 (plus a third year option apparently) year contract on offer from Charlton (with a sizable salary increase) was too good to turn down.

Well as long as she's not a massive curry addict, I'm sure his Mrs will enjoy the lifestyle in London vs Bradford.

    so we've signed -

a player is will be 30 in Dec & his best years are behind him

his goal scoring ratio for Bradford, who were chasing promotion last season, was 1 in 4

Just bought a new house in Bradford & so his wife may not be happy to re-locate

offered him more money than he was on before

...........whats there not to like ?

He wasn't out of contract, had another year left, hence us paying a six figure fee, undisclosed of course.

Sorry yes, out of contract at the end of next season I meant to say. One year left vs 2 and an option.

Is he tall enough ? Those two lads look almost the same height as him in that photo...

we only want players who really want to play for Charlton. As soon as Billy heard we were in for him he wanted to come....hmmm

How many players get to play for the club they supported as a kid?

When you see them kiss the badge it is because that's where they keep their wallet.

Like the rest of us, money is what gets you up in the morning. How you perform when you get there is down to you.

As a fellow Corkman. Best of luck to him. Pity we didn't go for Seanie Maguire too!

Don't disagree and my post was in no way meant to be a dig at Billy Clarke. Fair play to him for getting a decent contract.

He's a no 10. He's a left footer and not so great with his right foot.

He's not a goalscorer and hasn't necessarily got a great shot, but he's quite skilfull and is good at passing.

But if we play to his strengths, he could do well.

He's a trier and is popular. He picks up a fair few injuries.

Just a word about media releases. They are written by staff who specialise in writing such material. They write the quotes for the management person whose name then appears in the papers or on BBC/Sky etc. Slagging off KM all the time is getting very boring.

Oh come on they've at least got to make the quotes believable, even in the slightest .

Don't know anything about him but good luck to him, hope he has some decent players playing alongside him, but most of all hope we get new owners so I can see for myself how he gets on.

All for giving the bloke a fair chance. Hope he does well for us.

Going by the fact he's left a Statement on twitter to Bradford fans (not something many do) / the fact he's unhappy Bradford didnt try to keep him

It all points to one thing... He might not be the best Footballer in the world but he appears to be a "Fans Footballer" he appears at the moment to be one of those who wont give up trying and put his heart into every performance for the club and the fans almost like Ricky Holmes and Josh Magennis do at the moment (just with differing playing qualities).

On this basis he almost appears what you'd call an Alan Curbishley signing... Someone who wont take the piss and really work their socks off and over recent years and over the coming years we need that sort of player within the club more than ever because we've got a bunch of owners who appear the sort who are happy for the players to simply turn up collect their wages and bugger off again

This thread exemplifies the cynicism some of us have been harbouring over the last three years.

Maybe there's another ism to contend with - realism. Realistic to know that the vast majority of the players we have imported with RD at helm have been pony, and we've had enough of bringing in players who are , basically, sub-standard.

Rather have a grafter with a modicum of skill than a skillful big head who prances around as if he should be in the Prem but is doing us a favour. At 30 Billy isn't going to be having many offers so lets hope he can up his game and become a first team regular and fans favourite. Welcome aboard the skylark.

A journeyman player - what do you expect? We're unlikely to get another Kermorgant.

    Totally whelmed.
Not over or under just whelmed

Couldn't have put it better myself.

We need a squad, and that includes depth in attacking positions. He provides that.

If we go on to sign Reeves and Martin and Marshall and keep Holmes and Magennis this looks like a very shrewd bit of business. If not, then...yeah.
Not leaving anywhere for Messi and Rondaldo.

    could be the next Batman

So I should be grateful that we sign a player who will have no re-sale value & is only here because he can't get a gig anywhere else.

    Great.

Or in Charlton's case because they need to restart their implants.

In the past Charlton have been well served by players in the autumn of their careers.

Ron Saunders, Cliff Hilton and Ray Crawford spring to mind.

    Give the guy a chance.

As soon as I saw we'd signed Billy Clarke I knew it wouldn't long before the conversation turned to those two.

Luckily we're known for playing to players strengths ........ Oh wait.
