  • Very sad.

    RIP Drummer Lee Rigby
  • Disappointing and very upsetting to see.

  • Sigh.

It still amazes me how much misguided hatred some people have.
  • A permanent memorial, protected by 24 hour CCTV

!00% this. Those responsible must be real shits to have attacked the flags and photos, but a permanent memorial is way overdue.
  • Very sad news to read. I imagine there's not much you can do about this sort of crime except replace the flags. The more personal items are irreplaceable.

  • Absolute disgrace! What a horrible world we live in
  • Seems inevitable these days that memorials get vandalised.

That's a good idea just make sure the CCTV camera is working/switched on unlike the one over the road from the Lawrence plaque in Well Hall Road.

Of course, what's the point in having cameras that don't work?

Funny how they got it working after it was vandalised...remember it had a 24 hour police guard for several months as well.

The first camera put up was just a dummy, once the memorial got vandalised and it got out that the camera was a fake, a working camera (CCTV) was installed pretty quickly.

  • Why use a dummy one? Surely they aren't that expensive?

    That would make sense.
  • Does a memorial have to be where the tragedy happened? It’s on a busy road, at the back of a school, at the back of the barracks, at the back of a big block of flats.
Not really the place for quiet contemplation.
As Henry pointed out there is something at St.Georges, but I don’t know how easy it is to get access to it.

Just putting up a pole with a dummy camera on top is a lot cheaper then actually providing the real thing , ie:- providing a fibre optic link to it and back to a CCTV control room.

    @Davo55 @i_b_b_o_r_g

There is a permanent memorial about 700 yards from where Lee Rigby was murdered. It also honours two victims of the Woolwich pub bombings. It's unveiling was attended by Lee Rigby's widow and son.

The people who attacked the flags etc are still scum though.
Thanks @Henry Irving I was not aware.
  • The Cctv camera at the Lawrence plaque has worked since atleast 2005.
Police also carry out a check on it 3 times a day, during which they have to call the control room informing them that the check is being carried out.
The CAD (the longest running CAD in the Met) is then updated.
  • Disgusting things people do! RIP Lee

We left Eltham at the end of 2005, (the plaque was outside my neighbours, we lived at 322)....always something going on outside our house but never bothered us, we must have had one of the safest houses in SE London especially when the plaque was guarded for 24 hours a day....this must have been around 2002-03.

Surprised by that. Putting aside any other aspects that inevitable arise during these discussions, that really doesn't sound like a great use of a stretched police forces time and resources.

St Georges Garrison Church, which includes the Lee Rigby memorial, looking for volunteers.
