In order to keep food and drink prices down, Wim did not employ additional casual staff. He didn't have the ability to take cash for a drink and give change. All his other bar staff were volunteers and could not have used a till and it would also have taken much longer to serve each drink.
So we agreed a voucher system, possibly more complex than was really needed.
At stayen, I have had the same issue, I finally remembered to bring the 15 chips I had bought previously back and spent them, they were still the same colour as before.
I still ended up with around 8 chips at the end of the night.
I think it's a cash handling issue more than anything else. It makes the job of serving drinks easier and quicker.
Also means the bar staff can't serve the drinks and pocket the money in a situation where you don't have the infrastructure for other controls that achieve the same thing.
Interestingly what caused the complexity was wim trying to be fair and to offer soft drinks and Jupiler beers at a lower cost to those drinking them than the more expensive beers.
At least you didn't have to suffer my ideas of the night before that involved rubber bands and neon pen marks on your hands....

After finally arriving back in Greenwich late last night, and reading all the comments herein, i would just like to add to Neils comment about Wim - not many people have mentioned Wim to any great extent, but i would just like to add my sincerest thanks to him and his parents for everything they have done for us over the weekend. What many people might not know is that he came under pressure from the ST police to cancel the buffet/gig etc when they found out it was being held there - but he pushed them away. In all the times we have been to ST, Wim has now become a friend - and, if you are ever thinking of returning to ST then i wholeheatedly suggest you stay at Wims place. Also, his business has been hugely affected by RD opening Stayen Hotel . In that respect, thanks to @Miserableoldgit who 'found' Wim. Paul, hope you are well mate.

Why do I have participated in the protest march?
1) since the advent of Duchatelet our sports policy is a mess. Every year is a coming and going of players, with some stability there is no question. However, this stability is a prerequisite to be able to take steps forward.
2) Roland Duchatelet literally states: STVV has no ambition club, but a social club. I want as a supporter to make clear that the essence of football is still the pursuit of sporting success. I do not expect Champions League at Stayen, but the first president who just another readily admits that results are of secondary importance (as long as it is conservation but assured), I have yet to meet.
Were the past seasons have been better with a different president? STVV played meanwhile else already at Herk FC? That is possible, but equally we had a different owner and we did indeed bring to PO1. What is possible at Zulte-Waregem and Oostende, here's terms of potentially also possible. The essence of the problem: the reluctance of Duchatelet to also invest in the sport and WANT to do better. I'd rather play against Herk FC in a lower range, knowing that it will again steps forward the club, then go for every season in first at position 15.
3) The entire Duchatelet era STVV two x could take a step forward: under Guido Brepoels after PO1-season and last season under Ferrera with Schoofs, Junior, Dompé and co. Two x happened the same scenario: an exodus. Guido Brepoels this happened only after that fantastic season last season actually after a few rounds. It confirms point 1 and point 2: WIL sporty Duchatelet not move forward with STVV.
4) The stadium is a loose story for me. While I think that the construction of the stadium say enough about the vision of Duchatelet: business first, football is secondary (large stands with a lot of retail spaces but few seats). But if STVV can play football advantageous in the stadium, then that's fine for me. I also have no problems with the peripheral activities around a football, which is all part of today. Arrived back home about 1.30pm last night having stayed on in Belgium for unrelated reasons.
Just before arrival at the Veermarkt (and many thanks to Pico for driving me out there and to travelling companion Seth Plum for his great insights into the club and life in general) I discovered that I was to be the Duchatelet Balloon carrier for the day!
So apologies if you were nearly decapitated on the march by an out-of-control Roland but in fact he behaved quite well apart from a spell around the Bus and Train station when he seemed to run out of steam (or should it be air?).
Anyway, he recovered sufficiently to engage in some vinegar pissing outside the ground before being ceremonially deflated (i.e. a lot of people jumped on him until he was a meaningless blob - if only?). (just a joke facebook scrutineers - just a joke - calm down).
Apologies also to those I had arranged to meet up with out there but not possible to phone message etc. without the risk of Balloon Roland escaping although had he done so and then contrived to come down on the pitch during STVV v Eupen that would have been quite a coup.
Finally, I realise that at heart I must be something of a shy person and I would loved to have met all those who post on here and were in Belgium and put faces to names. Leaving this aside I was proud to be alongside you all and be part of another special day in the history of this famous football club and I take my hat off to those who organised the travel, the events at the bar, the co-ordination with local authorities and the inventiveness of the banners (Seth Plum's banner alone must warrant a future place in the National Football museum).

We tried, but my phone had died so we had no idea where it was. @TCE and I in the Grote Markt accosted a group of ladies. They were two mother and daughter combos, who told us that it would take an hour to walk there and anyway it would soon be closed. Then they said with some emphasis " WE are going for a gin and tonic" , but our "playing" days are long over, and we let that pass and headed over to a bar behind the square which they had recommended.
There we met up again with @oohaahmortimer and @ThreadKiller. Just as they were leaving the bar, the women turned up again and some interaction took place. I was still inside trying to explain to a paralytic bloke with no English that my scarf wasn't Eupen. I turned for the door and that's when I noticed that two more middle-aged ladies were sitting with their drinks and regarding me with some interest. Admittedly, this was probably because they had never seen a near pensioner bloke in a burka before, but mark my words, stuff happens in Sint-truiden on a Saturday night :-) .

I think everything I wanted to say has already been said. I travelled on the day coach and the whole experience was wonderful from start to finish. I didin't know anyone there apart from my husband but everyone was friendly and welcoming. I would just like to thank CARD, The Belgium 20, The 2% and WAR for all their hard work and fantastic organisation. I felt really honoured to help hold the WAR banner during the protest. COYR

Many thanks to all those who must have spent ages arranging everything so that the day ran smoothly. Doing all this around jobs, studies or things that take over lives in retirement cannot have been easy. All I had to do was get up early and do lots of driving either side of the channel. A great time in the bar and it was quite amusing when late arrivals didn't realise we were watching again the 1st half of the Northampton game and thought we'd equalised. I've generally accepted the view that ultimately we are 'all Charlton' and different views should be accepted, but as mentioned elsewhere some of the views on the Facebook page about the protest are beyond belief or any rational analysis, but that shouldn't be allowed to detract from the day
Seeing as how it has been mentioned, I am pleased to say I started the RRR song. I had discussed finding an opportunity to get it going on the drive over with Pico and Coyotejohn.
Firstly, a very big thank you to all who put in such huge efforts to get all this together. Evidently there were quite major difficulties in selecting a suitable route for the march, which I'm guessing, wasn't in an area we would have chosen ourselves. But that we got the go ahead at all was by all accounts quite an achievement.....demos of any kind in Belgium right now are understandably under the microscope and I got the distinct impression they are not really a part of Belgian culture anyway......and certainly not in sleepy little St Truiden! The people of the town were very pleasant indeed and took on board what we were about........but some were clearly a little uncertain of how to react. About an hour before we were due to begin the march the heavens opened up....I defenately conclude that this had a significant effect on the number of locals who might otherwise have joined us. Us Addicks were of course fully committed as we were going whatever the weather. It tipped down just at the very moment any ST fans who may have considered joining us were about to leave home to link up......ironically and thankfully the rain packed up about a quarter of an hour before the march began. As for the stadium and the atmosphere therein, the less said the better.....the plastic pitch was perfectly in keeping with everything else......plastic from start to finish......the fans were about as enthusiastic as a man on his way to the gallows! Myself, Addickted, el pietro and LBTS left at half time (me with my Roland Out plaquard somehow still in my possession). We made our way to The Brewery.....a huge converted barn like building with an amazing wooden ceiling the height of the average cathedral......yes, truly fantastic ambience and of course it being a Saturday night it was packed.....my plaquard was respectfully raised on several occasions and everyone there knew of our presence........no riffraff in this very classy establishment, everyone dressed up for the evening, so I suspect many of the clientele were, shall we say, from the "demourange of glitterati" of Sint Truiden, so an excellent place to subtly get our message across and in a location where one can be sure Goldfinger and Pussy Galore (when she's in town), hang out from time to time. Should there be a 'next time' march, those of you having any doubts need to rethink very very seriously about your misgivings......honestly, if Goldfinger won't come to our patch we have to go to his......quite simply as things stand at the moment, due to his evident cowardice, there is NO OTHER WAY!!! If you can think of one, then please let us know......I'm sure we'd all be interested to hear it.

Well, I can tell you that, before the advent of Duchatelet, the atmosphere at Staaien was often very feisty, - such that it was widely known as "Hell van Staaien" or Staaien hell.
What you witnessed on Saturday was the result of 13 years of his stewardship.
We can see how the atmosphere at the Valley has deteriorated after only 3 years. Try to imagine how it might be10 years from now, should we fail to persuade Duchatelet and his minnions to go

They no longer attend matches or spend money on the club but are still in love with STVV and still travel home matches to demonstrate against RD but wont spend any money there to line RD's pockets but go onto to a nearby bar. They only attend away matches to watch their team.....all this sounds familiar? They even said that its not down to winning matches as they have always been average.
What was very special is they went on to say that they were taken aback by not only the numbers that travelled over from London but the sheer range of ages from youngsters to the oldies plus many females. They said Charlton must be a real community club which is something they had pre-RD.
They thanked me and we all wished each other the best of luck in ridding this curse and walked off with the anti RD placards. I continued on towards the station with a sudden sadness for the STVV fans. I dont think STVV have the numbers that will come together to fight against RD and he will deny their families from enjoying a real community based football club.
I felt proud of being on this protest march. I felt proud of our community spirit and our family of supporters. I felt proud that we made the effort to do something to ensure that our soul is not completely destroyed by these people that dont understand what a football club means. And this has truely hardened my resolve to continue the fight against this awful regime. Let's hope that these STVV fans get that success too.
And finally, safe journey home y'all and many thanks to all those that pulled this together....awesome!

You might have seen from me a demand for action which will hurt him such as a total boycott. He obviously lives for money so you must hit him financially. It is not because of Roland that Charlton fans behave well when protesting; the contrary view is that even the well behaved fan are unhappy and protest so Roland cannot be liked! Have the protests worried him - yes, we know that they have. Well, maybe not worry, but certainly embarrass him in his own locality, and that must hurt his ego.
A total boycott would be great, but it is unfeasible - some fans will go to games whoever is in charge. But the boycott by some fans (of attendance, or on merchandise and food outlets) is hurting his pocket every week.
I note that you then switch to "you must" and "you are" for some reason - are you not going to join in the protest @Grumpy (in whatever way you feel able)? We are as one! It would be great to oust this incompetent and his lying puppet but we have to do it legally, and without violence/disorder as that would play into his hands and ultimately hurt the club.

Should there be a 'next time' march, those of you having any doubts need to rethink very very seriously about your misgivings......honestly, if Goldfinger won't come to our patch we have to go to his......quite simply as things stand at the moment, due to his evident cowardice, there is NO OTHER WAY!!!

What you witnessed on Saturday was the result of 13 years of his stewardship.
All I hope for is what one of the guys said after the march ended at the ground: "Well, if he doesn't listen to 250 fans, we'll show up with 2000 the next time." You can be sure me and some mates will be there.
In the short term my hope is that GrAS can develop into a seriuous pressure group and then proceed to be a thorn in Duchatelet's side. Maybe then he'll listen to the legitimate concerns of STVV fans
In other words I am questioning whether you have done anything to worry him, or move him to change his ways. You might have seen from me a demand for action which will hurt him such as a total boycott. He obviously lives for money so you must hit him financially. We have a massive problem with this ignorant individual, if you are not prepared to play legally but unpleasantly to an extreme you might as well give up. Think about how wonderful it would be if we can oust him and his puppet, and then get very very angry !
A total boycott would be great, but it is unfeasible - some fans will go to games whoever is in charge. But the boycott by some fans (of attendance, or on merchandise and food outlets) is hurting his pocket every week.
I note that you then switch to "you must" and "you are" for some reason - are you not going to join in the protest @Grumpy (in whatever way you feel able)? We are as one! It would be great to oust this incompetent and his lying puppet but we have to do it legally, and without violence/disorder as that would play into his hands and ultimately hurt the club.
