Charlton 1 Millwall 0. 6th Jan 1968.

edited February 2017 in General Charlton
I can still picture the goal.

After the 3 previous fixtures against stonewall had ended 0-0, Alan Campbell was put through on a bog of a pitch, it had been raining heavily, not sure if it still was?

With a defender at his heels and the goalkeeper advancing, he slid in and put the ball through the goalkeepers legs and I can remember it nestling in the back of the net, as I was behind the goal, for the only goal of the game and is why Alan Campbell has always been a favourite player and hero of mine.

Any one else remember the game?

It still haunts me to this day.

We won, how can it haunt you?

That's just it. You shouldn't have won

Ha ha, can't remember if we deserved it or not but surely you can't begrudge us a win, they're so rare against you lot<(:-)>

I was there with my Dad and this was my first season supporting Charlton aged 11 year old. I left the ground thinking of many more wins like this against our local rivals...........................................how wrong can an 11 year old be??

I was there ...... a dull drab day and 2 evenly matched teams, with no quarter given and short on chances, made it a dull drab match.

And as the OP says, Campbell's goal was confidently and superbly taken.
    But that was about it.

It was the first goal scored after 3 consecutive 0-0 draws with Millwall.
Good crowds in those days, must have been around 30,000 for that 2nd Division fixture.

But it wasn't long before things were back to normal.
Later that year, on a glorious sunny, August Saturday afternoon.
We turned up and won 3-4. :)

I was eleven and it was my first visit to the Valley.
I remember thinking how impressive that big terrace opposite
that main stand looked. And how the main stand with that funny roof,
looked like a giant train siding.

    Just sayin'.
Remember that match. Keithy Peacock put us 1-0 up in less than 2 minutes.
First match of the season, fastest goal in the entire Football League.

    Shame about the result.

But it was a cracking game of football on a warm sunny day.
That was the season Charlton finished 3rd - and Palace 2nd and promoted. Brian Clough's Derby County runaway champions.

Can't remember where Millwall finished though.

    Millwall finished 10th.

Just been looking at some old (google) photos.
Good lord, that ground was enormous.

This was my dad's first ever game. He went with a group of Charlton friends, and being a neutral at the time, chose to support Millwall. We won and so his allegiance was set. He still apologises to me to this day. I've now been going 35 years myself...... and have children myself. Hmmm mm????

A good and bad start for your dad, it might of been better if Millwall had won, less angst!

I would of been 14 at the time, not my first game.

That was actually a brilliant game, one of the few I actually remember.

I also remember this game well, just thinking about it they didn't score against us for 4 successive games. Shame it's been downhill ever since.
