Would this team have been more PROFITABLE?

Hamer
Konsa, Morrison, Gomez, Jenkinson
Shelvey, Poyet, Stephens, Aribo
Lookman, Kermorgant

That team is made up of players recently sold, or looking likely to be sold soon. Some of them went for fees and each sale effectively reduced the wage bill. So, the owner might argue that each sale specifically - and all sales, collectively - were good, profitable decisions.

But here is my question - would Charlton be more profitable if these players had not been sold? The transfer income would have been much lower and the wage bill higher (you could argue that it wouldn't be *that* much higher, as we would not have been paying big wages for the likes of Texeira, Watt, etc). But, set against those "savings", would we be languishing in the third tier? Would we, instead, be in the Championship, preparing for an FA Cup tie? Maybe even pushing for a play-off place? Or better? Would we be playing in front of four-figure crowds at The Valley? Or pushing 20k - and more? Would we be on TV more often, ths benefiting from TV income?

The thing is, it's very easy to criticise any of the player sales on footballing reasons. Because, frankly, they were pretty much all terrible decisions, as anyone could see (unless you're weighed down with a laptop and your man-cub hair prevents you seeing properly). But are they also equally ridiculous business decisions.

Even though they currently own and run our football club, you can't criticise RD and KM for their lack of football experience, after all, he made his money outide football, and she's used to be a lawyer. So, if they make bad football decisions - which, let's face it, they have, over and over and over again - it's almost understandable. But as business people surely they should be making smarter business decisions?

Anyway, back to the question. Would Charlton be more profitable had those sales (past and future) not been made?

    Classic cop out. It depends.

If able to gain promotion to the Prem undoubtedly with all the money washing around but if not then it is problematic. Would we have needed all the non-playing dross we are still paying for like Tucudean, Polish Pete and others? If not then maybe those high wages would equate to the present position plus dross.

Charlton can only realistically be "profitable" in the Premier League and I don't think that team would get us there, so no.
