I was in Washington (DC) on business a couple of years ago. Happened to land at Dulles about half an hour after a Saudi Airlines 747. The terminal was ridiculous - it was like a standoff between the TSA and armed police one side and families the other. At one point, a bloke happened to step about half an inch over a line whilst waiting to be checked by passport control and some roided-up meat-head with a submachine gun screamed at him to get back across the line. The bloke had two pre-school age kids with him ffs

They may or may not be facts, if they are facts, they dont really explain the reason behind all of these deaths. Dont get me wrong, at the moment, these latest two shootings look to me as though the police are in the wrong. this goes hand-in-hand with the death-by-police rate being 2.5x higher for black ppl

I meant 'actual criminals', as opposed to a criminalised population. Agree with the points raised about institutionalised racism, and whilst I normally take 'conspiracy theory' type stuff about 'the system' with a pinch of salt, I definitely agree that the prison business in the US relies on criminalising a huge swathe of the population to keep feeding it new meat.
I remember when I was a kid, lots of my mates were black - largely as a result of growing up and going to school in Deptford. I started to notice them drift away from me when I was about 14 - and didn't 'get it' at the time. It was only when I got to about 16 or 17 and the few black friends I had were getting regularly stopped by the gavvers (sometimes two or three times a night) that I started to twig - especially since I was a proper little shit at times and was more likely to ahve done something wrong than they had. Now imagine what it must be like to be black and go through all that shit in the US, where the coppers stopping you are heavily armed and quite possibly unhinged?
Thing is, the US is a particularly bad example of where brutal free-market economics ends up when it's allowed to run rampant and unchecked. Their country is, largely, fucked.

I'd argue that only an idiot would be in complete denial of the fact that there's a massive problem in the black communities in most US cities with em shooting each other, leading in turn to the Police shooting them. I should clarify, first of all this was a genuine question, and secondly no, black people do not commit less crime, there can be many arguments for why, the one I go for is socioeconomic, for example we know you are more likely to be a criminal if you come from a poorer background (less life options etc) and a lot of black people unfortunately come from a poorer background, and if you are a criminal you are more likely to get shot.

IMO had MLK and Robert Kennedy not gone the same way then things would have progressed, however shocking JFK's assassination was. At that point it seemed that anyone trying to do the right thing was a target.
The gun culture is out of control. If everyone is (potentially) armed, then not surprisingly the police will overreact at the merest twitch from someone in a tense situation, and we know they are more likely to overreact more to people with particular profiles. Prison & arrest are not deterrents, which is why the jail population is ridiculously high.
