CHARLTON ATHLETIC FC ARE SADDENED TO LEARN OF THE DEATH AT APPROXIMATELY 14.30pm ON SATURDAY THE 7TH OF MAY OF FANS FAVOURITE THE CORNER FLAG SOFA.

    A spokesperson said:

In a disappointing season the Corner Flag Sofa has been the one constant and enduring success. Fans were not to know that a lap of honour for the sofa had been arranged for the recliner at the end of the game on Saturday to mark its outstanding contribution in providing matchday experience of the highest quality. This of course did not happen and Roland Duchâtelet has described the incident as an attack on the club by a bunch of mindless Chaise Lounge lizards.

CEO Katrien Meire later stated: ‘We accept that some mistakes were made and have learned from these so we are instead now looking at a range of high quality armchairs…the fans should understand that everyone at the club is committed to working hard over the course of the coming months to ensure that upholstery at The Valley will be the best on offer in League 1’
  • It's a shame that Katrien didn't stay to see the demise of the sofa, she could have asked the Burnley lot for a replacement seeing as their shirt sponsor is Sofa Store.
  • Just saw Neil the sloth outside the homeless shelter.
  • I hear the sofa will be buried at Charlton Cemetery next Saturday with full military honours.

Pinocchio will lead the congregation with a rousing rendition of Otis Redding's "Down in the Valley", followed by Richard Murray leading on an acapella version of "My Old Man's a Dustman".

Su Parkes will then lead an all female choir with "Jump Up and Down and Wave Your Knickers in the Air"

And, to bring proceedings to an emotional close, representatives from DFS will be on hand, giving everyone a copy of their latest sale catalogue.

I hope TVs, and the trans and GQ will be allowed to join in?
  • What actually happened? Did the fans invade the pitch and some took it upon themselves to grab it and rip it to shreds? Was it a pre-planned thing?

Unfortunately I've been travelling most of the day (work related) so haven't really kept up with all the events.

Seemed a spontaneous action by some fans from my perspective.

Stewards desparate to protect it and rough up some people.

Lifer who instigated action was escorted off pitch by police but not arrested as some have rumoured.

Body of sofa survived but cushions are no more. RIP.

A gesture of course but a highly symbolic one that cheered a lot of people.
Henry, you must be sad about this. Didn't you want the sofa to take pride of place in the museum?
Henry, don't accept any of the stuffing into the Museum or the club will have you for receiving stolen goods.

    Proper Charlton question, that.
Was the Henry Hoover manufactured in Cardigan?

    Surprised it took so long.

    : - )
  • Oh my days, it feels like Scooby Doo, I've just unraveled the mystery of what happened to poor old scarfy, he got lost down the side of the sofa.

I can see a remake of Hart to Hart coming to our screens soon and this would be the intro -

This is my boss Roland Duchatelet, a self made millionaire
And this is Katrien, She's the CEO, And she knows how take care of herself,
By the way, my name is Max and I'm the sofa,
I take care of these two by placating the fans with comfy cushions, and arm rests,
But when they put me pitch side,
    It was Moider!

My parents are buried in Charlton Cemetery and the plot has room for one more. My late dad (Charlton through and through) had a dark sense of humour so I am sure he would love to accommodate the sofa's remains, as long as the sofa's relatives are happy for it to be interred in the Catholic section!
  • The real sofa was not destroyed yesterday, the regime had already taken the real sofa to a secret destination

PS How about the Kooks for the music to the footage taken yesterday

  • Its a shame, that sofa was just one day away from retirement.
  • Credit where credit's due, this was a brilliant initiative from Target 20k.

    It was them, wasn't it???
  • If anyone can post a video of the sofas disembowlment that would be great. Overlay Dire Straits' (apt name)song "so far way" would be perfect
  • Just found this, daisy launching the fans sofa. Do you think she took a corner flag to Dubai?

  • I'm amazed the sofa lasted that long.

Sofa king great (geddit?) when that got ripped up.

Katrien, this is what we think of your crumby ideas. Just look at what happened, your sofa got ripped up, boo-hoo. That is what you call iconoclasm. It wasn't ripped up because it's a bad sofa, it was ripped up because it was the upholstered embodiment of you. Now, just go!

    Sofa (1 of 4)

    Sofa (2 of 4)

    Sofa (3 of 4)

    Sofa (4 of 4)

    Sofa (1 of 4)

Looks like Tony Jiminez in the crowd, NW quadrant.
  • I missed my first home game for 16 years on Saturday as a friend got married.

So I would like to thank everyone that ripped that *%*@#*% sofa apart.

I only wish I could have been there to assist.
  • Erm why is this guy topless?

    Not just topless
  • Is that why all the men are smiling at him?

  • You inconsiderate bar-stards. it was my turn to sit on the world-famous sofa for the first home game next season. I will now have to redraw my Bucket List !!!
  • In years to come, Katrien Meire will be seen as a footballing revolutionary thinker.....

Tbf they’ve done a decent job re-upholstering that one from when we had it, you can’t see any bite marks on it at all now  ;)
