Away Support (Heracles Almelo FC)

Heracles Almelo FC travelled to Amsterdam last night (roughly a 300 mile round trip) to play Ajax at the Amsterdam Arena in a Dutch Premier League match.

Heracles are a relatively small club and don’t usually take that many supporters away.

Last night they took 15, so rather than opening up the away section of the ground and spending money on stewarding and catering staff, Ajax officials closed the away end and put the 15 Heracles in an executive box. They really rolled out the red carpet for them as well giving them the full hospitality experience.

Nice story I thought. I reckon the way things are going, only the executive boxes at The Valley will be in use at home games before too long!

82-83 away to Newcastle....so few of us, the police took us from the station to the ground in a couple of their vans. That was their equivalent of the red carpet treatment.

Remember that well...my 1st visit to St Jamses....can't recall the score though..maybe a 2-1 defeat.

Lost 4-2. Newcastle 2-0 up then Martin Robinson scored twice with low shots 2-2. Then Imre Varadi got at least one and that was that. Good game though.

Unless you are thinking about the 2-1 defeat 1983-84 (a week after we got bashed 7-0 at Brighton). That one is on Youtube.
  • I got a police escort from Leeds to the station once. Unfortunately not the train station.

Well, if you must travel National Express....

Must have been, I think I went to both, always liked going up to Newcastle. The 7-0 defeat was my 18th birthday weekend, so will never forget that....party in Thamesmead (another mate's 18th) and then all off to Brighton for the day (via the Market Porter) a cracking day despite the 7-0 drubbing.

Drizzle at Brighton and proper pissing down the following Saturday in Newcastle!

St James Park back then was a fantastic place to go. The crowd felt as though they were on top of you and when they got going, the noise along that terrace in front of the main stand was something else. I wish the TV cameras had been on the other side because you never got to see that terrace on the box.

A few years later, May 87 I think, we went up there and done them 3-0 which from memory either relegated them or very nearly did and made for an interesting get away from St James's Park. Things were reversed though with the police taking us back to the station for our own safety.

I drove up with a right mix in my car, 4 others went with me from Stockport that included a Man U fan, one Glasgow Rangers, one Villa and a Gooner (long story). At the end of the game I remember the Gallowgate end pouring over the fences and snapping the crossbar en route to our end where our hand full of fans were congregated. There was a major riot going on when suddenly from nowhere a big geordie copper stood on a little flat roof adjacent to our terrace and through a megaphone announced 'Charlton fans, as you can see we have a bit of a problem, at the moment the gates are locked but looking at what is going on on the pitch it is probably wise to open the gates now and try and get you out safely'. The Villa fan with us shouted back at the copper, what do you mean try, you'll do better than fucking try he screamed with one eye on 10k rioting Geordies on the pitch heading our way.

It was certainly squeaky bum time outside the ground that day

I was there. We got a lift back to the train station, in a police van.

I was at that one too. A BH Monday and we won 3-0. Miller, Crooks and Leaburn's first goal for Charlton (and his last one for quite a while!)

Newcastle had been in deep shit at the bottom of the table but had signed Paul Goddard, whose goals made them safe before that game. We weren't safe and a defeat would have meant almost certain relegation.

After the game, I went straight to the pub with a mate and his Geordie relative and only just made train home at 1am (went straight to work the next day). We were in a club/bar and as I came out of the bog I bumped into Glen Roeder, Peter Jackson, Kenny Wharton and Martin Thomas (the keeper). A quick reenactment of Crooks' goal didn't go down well....especially with Jackson, so I fucked off.

  • Not only did Ajax put the Heracles fans in an executive box, they even let them display their banner as well. I wonder if it covered any advertising boards??

I went up on the coach for this one, Gazza was still playing for them then. I've got the video of the game and there's an incident when him and another Newcastle player go for the ball, collide and go arse over tit. Pretty sure we bumped into the team at a service station on the way home and got my programme signed.

All other Dutch teams' supporters' clubs announce they will be having a draw for which fifteen lucky supporters get to see their team play at Ajax.
  • Feyenoord and ADO Den Haag will be unlucky than ......Away ban inforce for them.
