Non-Charlton Saturdays and England

edited October 2006 in General Charlton
hate them, really do.

Even if we are away and i'm not going, it occupies all my thoughts, and i spend half the afternoon finding out the score etc.

England games are just not doing it for me at the moment. Used to enjoy watching the national team, particularly as all the guys in our group all support different clubs, so it was nice cheering on the same team for a change. But Sven spoilt it for me, and i find it really hard to warm to this present crop. Didn't even know who we were playing till i saw it on a poster last night.

So painting and DIY for me tomorrow. Hate that to, but needs must.

What are you doing, and does the national team still do it for you ?

I am moving the people in my office from a temporary space to a newly refurbished office. Assuming the bits for the desks arrive, the cable guys turn up before 11am and the one armed Frenchman turns up with the wobbly wall.

If I am lucky I will listen to the England game on the radio on my way home.

Your kiddin right ? I Love watching England play, well not love enjoy, ok not enjoy watch out of obligation & the fact that Iam English & proud to be so. Always used to go to the old Wembley, have stopped going since England started to going 'On Tour' around the country. Will definately start going again when we return to the new Wembley. For now, I am happy to settle down in the pub a few hours before kick off, get lashed watchin the game & stay out on it for the rest of the day.

Charlton by choice, English by the grace of God. I feel AFKA's comments are not from the heart, just an "in" thing to say.

I always go and watch a local game in the Kent League - Tomorrow I'm off down to Slade Green to watch them play Lordswood.

"in" thing to say - rubbish!.. i feel the same. Ill watch it but cant get excited about it at the moment... when it starts gearing up a notch i will but i think me and most of my mates are still feeling pretty flat after that crap world cup we had. too soon after it.

the only thing i will really look forward to tomorrow about that match is to see if and how parker plays.

tomorrow i'm a chauffeur to the boys in my life taking them to and from a stag do. so going to pop to me nan's, me mum's, me mates to see her kids, and probably catch the game round hers, but probably talk the whole way through it, and then chill out with a bottle of wine in the evening, butch cassidy and the sundance kid and a chinese for 1.

do watch england if i'm in, and usually see it as an opportunity to socialise with friends in the pub or at a bbq, more than watch and concentrate on the game. i don't watch it in the same way i do charlton. ie, wouldn't miss a second.

i suppose i should be interested if my plans go into action and i go to the euro's in a couple of years, but i had to ask les last night who we were playing.

Won't get a more pround Englishman than me.

I just can't really get fully enthused with cheering people like Crouch, Defoe, Ashley Cole, Lampard, Rio etc at the moment.

Watching England can be like watching Charlton, you might not enjoy it but it has to be done.

and your right with that oracle.

I can just never remember an England team having players in i didn't like before, yet there are about 5 in the current set up that i can't stand.

I'm not sure whether its due to us now playing against these players every week on an even footing that has done that, or whether this current crop see themselves more as celebrities now than footballers. I think its the celebrity thing.

I can't really remember any regular players under Robson, Taylor, Hoddle, Keegan who i really did not like.

I'm with AFKA...I have no real enthusiasm for England at the moment. Sven and his clueless tactics did it for me. The last England game, midweek away from home suggested that under McClaren nothing hasn't changed.

The other factor that hacks me off is constant media fawning over and hyping up of England during the WC it was clear that Sven was out of his depth and that the England team were boring to watch, with too many players playing out of position, an over-reliance on Beckham, that Crouch just wasn't up to it etc instead of a dose of realism we got more hype. Interesting that the players before the tournament were all behind England and the management but since then there has been a steady trickle of players coming out to say that they had reservations about the style of play - Ferdinand being the latest.

I'm keeping an open mind about McClaren and hope for the best but the enthusiasm hasn't returned yet, maybe I'll watch the match, maybe not. More than likely I'll be drawn in hoping that a bunch of multi-millionaires who owe their living and fortunes to the game can somehow find the enthusiasm to see off a bunch of third rate European opponents without making it look like they are going through purgatory in the process. But if they do we'll get flooded with England are on course to win the European Championships hype...

Having a couple of Charlton players round the squad really got me excited about the national side again. When Bent wasn't selected for the WC I actually wanted England to lose games in a kind of 'ha serves you right' type sentiment.

I guess now i watch the games but i don't support the side.

Totally agree. I'm still suffering with a sven hangover and haven't really got much enthusiasm for England games at the moment.

Got a 3 day old in doors that I'm sure will keep me occupied!

I enjoy watching England because I want them to win. I associate myself with them but not just because I am English as I never follow the England Rugby team and in fact hope they lose. What makes it fun is that I'm not that bothered if they lose certainly not in the way I am when Charlton lose or even draw. Don't care for McClaren but didn't care for and about any of the managers. Has no effect on whether I watch or not. As it is on BBC I will. If it wasn't wouldn't bother.

Wife if working tomorrow so it will be homework with the boy, housework and then, if it's not peeing down watch Bromley v East Thurrock (or the big shopping centre derby as it is known), back home to watch England play whoever it is and then , best of all now that Dr Who is off air a bit of dad and son telly , the new version of Robin Hood.

i'm 'doing' the monopoly board tomorrow. a drink on every street, so by kick off i'll be lucky to make sense of the game anyhow.

    right, ok.

Was in the pub with 5 others. England was on, and it was a 'corner of the eye' thing rather than outright watching it.

Apart from when we hit ithe bar in the 2nd half, i never really watched any of it. 12 months ago, i would of told you that England was more important to me than Charlton. I have lost it THAT much in 12 months.

So anyone that watched it, what was your assessment ?

Saw that Bent never got a run out again. Will there have to be a national outbreak of cholera before he gets a chance ?

England always has one of those games when they could play for another 24 hours and still not score. There were too many players out there who were having one of their bad hair days -it happens. Didn't think little Bent would make an appearance on the pitch, but pleased he didn't, as he would have had to take all the blame. Still don't know how that Downing gets picked for the England squad let alone in the team (Mr McLaren - he might be your son but he is not good enough...honestly!) and as for Lampard - what did he does he do other than play for Chelsea?

The only good point is that for some strange reason, I had a dream last night/this morning and witnessed Sir Clive putting one in the back of the net for England and the whole pub went berserk!

exactly how many goals will Benty have to score before the papers start putting him forward ?

    I reckon its 78 in a season.

England seem to have changed their game to accomodate Crouch which seems rather Bizarre. When everyone is fit upfront will be Rooney & Owen, so who's game is nearest to Owen's Crouch/Defoe or Bent ? Well it cetainly ain't Crouch. Very dis-appointed again, a few players are gonna have to raise their game Wednesday or we will get beaten. Personally I think we missed Hargreaves breaking up the play on Saturday. I won't comment on Downing or Lumpolard as their performances spoke for themselves.

Went out and did knowledge stuff with my knowledge partner. Roads were lovely and empty surprisingly.

Watched the highlights. But can't be bothered to watch to be honest.. Mclaren is no different to Sven. Picks players off form CONTINUOSLY because of who they are.

Game looked like it was crying out for someone who can makes runs off the last man. Someone like Benty.

Wasn't it said before the world cup that pace was the secret at international level?

So why exactly did we have the slowest England side for the last 10? I'm quicker than Crouch, Carrick, Lampard & Downing. It says something when the quickest player in your side is your centre back.
