Sand and Water used in early measurement of time

How was the sand and water calibrated to measure time? A bit of a chicken and egg question for me.

Sundial a good shout I guess, or just calibrated for the length of time they needed it to measure?

By using any relative point of reference, which could be anything you choose, as long as it is consistent.

Well if the sand is covered in water, it's high tide, and if the water if far away it's low tide. From there you can divide the days. This basic structure would eventually allow the fourth official at Chelsea to hold up 4 minutes of extra time.

It's a little known fact that in the same way that football did not exist until The FA invented the Premier League, time did not exist until Casio invented the watch.
