Young Guns

Posted on the player marks thread but thought it deserved its own thread. 7 out of our 11 players yesterday were 24 and under.

Gomez 17
Cousins 20
Vetokele 22
Tucudean 23
Solly 23
Gudmundson 24
Etheridge 24

Are we expecting too much from our young guns?

Well, we were repeatedly told that the young players were now older than last season as a justification for running such a thin squad.

Didn't make sense then or now.

There are some good players and good prospects in the 18 from last night but we are asking a lot of people like Gomez and Fox. Others, though older are new to England.

Great to see young players come thru but in reality we have no other choice given our lack of depth. So we have to be a little patient when they make mistakes IMHO.

    - Gomez definitely needs more time and needs to be played in what he believes is his natural position, if he knows it as of yet.
    - Cousins must be getting knackered, he's being used all over the field every match bless him, he needs a rest.
    - Vetokele is still learning, looks like he needs another rest too
    - Tucudean's main problem is the jump from Romanian top tier/2nd tier (the 2nd tier is a worlds length in quality away from Championship) to the Championship. Not sure quality is enough, but he needs more time so we can judge that.
    - Solly's only problem isn't maturity or age, just his knee problems and lack of suport.
    - Gudmundsson is very mature for his age, football in Iceland is a big thing and they train quite often even from a young age.
    - Still a lot to see of Etheridge, not done anything outstanding but not done anything wrong as of yet .

Most of the 23, 24 y.o's are at an age they should be ready for this level, fully grown men that have been playing football for plenty of years, just this league they need to mature in imo

    Are you Lawrenson in disguise?
    Can't win anything with kids.

I agree but I think if we're going to let anyone off getting flack because they're young then we need to let them all off, except maybe Gomez. Hard to believe Vetokele and Fox are almost the same age yet we expect Vetokele to be the main man and expect Fox to slip up because of his inexperience.

Our squads average age is 24.2, the joint youngest in the league with Huddersfield and Fulham.

    Or Hansen....

It is good to have some youngsters in the team but not if they are only playing cause we have got no one else.

Gomez looks like he's been quickly Charltonised compared to the composed displays when he first played.

It's good to have the youth being used, but only with a good balance of experience alongside them.

Also good if the fans can realise they will make mistakes, but will try to learn and improve.

Try playing them in their proper positions, playing their natural game, like Poyet did, and they will do just as well.

So, in the league of the three youngest, we are top

Has not played in best position yet which is CB.
Did fine at RB in most games.
Played poorly at LB, in last two games. (can't tackle with Left foot if winger go's on outside)
i belive he was changed to right side during the game?

    Q. which is the only position in the back 4 or 5 he should not play. (other than goalkeeper you clever dicks)

if you are good enough you are old enough and age is nothing

Gomez 17-fair play you can have him
Cousins 20-2nd season as a first teamer
Vetokele 22-Champions and Europa league Experience
    Tucudean 23-Europa League Experience
Solly 23-almost 150 Charlton games now
Gudmundson 24-Champions and Europa league Experience
Etheridge 24-been around a few clubs but never broke into anyone's first team

Gomez is fair play and possible Etheridge due to lack of games but everyone else has good in some cases great experience
