Rise of the Smartphone / Tablet - CL Usage

edited December 2014 in Not Sports Related
Just been looking at some comparison stats of CL access, and found it fascinating to see the changing picture over what is really such a short space of time.

I suspect if it wasn't for work PC's, the humble desktop is almost obsolute. Would be interested to know the PC / Laptop split under Desktop.

Anyway, thought some of you might find this of interest

Year … 2014 … 13 … 12 … 11 … 10 … 09
Desktop … 46 … 50 … 63 … 78 … 88 … 99
Mobile … 34 … 35 … 27 … 21 … 12 … 1
Tablet … 20 … 15 … 10 … 1 … 0 … 0

  • What's as interesting is how you can pick up this information.

Tempted to ask what other aspects of our computer usage you can pick up on! :-)
  • Too late to delete your cache now F82M :-)
  • Also fascinating at simply just how dominent Apple are in terms of mobiles.

iOS account for 68% of operating system access this year, Android 28%, Windows Phone 2%, Blackberry 1%

That's not what is worrying me - it's whether you can track I occasionally visit holmesdale.net :-)
  • Can we flag Fortune for that?

Always amazes me when they publish stats that show Apple devices "in decline" and then go on to state that Android is outstripping IOS. Not really a fair comparison as Android runs on multiple devices whereas IOS only runs on Apple!
  • I only have a laptop for work but I do have it set up with monitors, keyboard and a mouse so it's as good as a PC.

Away from my desk I wouldn't entertain using the laptop. I do use the phone from time to time but CL is perfect for an iPad. I don't need to wrote much, normally, and reading is so much easier on the larger screen.
  • Interesting also as Apple smart phone sales are about 20 per cent, must be a lot of iPads or older iPhones in use. Iphone 6 has boosted their share, must say its a definite improvement.

  • I assume IOS doesn't include OSX
  • I've seen these sort of stats in other fields at conferences and they don't surprise me much. The interesting one for me is that mobile seems to have peaked with tablets picking up the non-desktop traffic. In Asia where much of computing has jumped the desktop era, it would be far more heavily weighted towards mobile, I suspect.

  • I mainly use my Desktop indoors but switch to the iPad in the evenings when watching tv etc. to keep in touch with CL & Facebook.
  • I have a faithful desktop which sees a lot of Charlton Life usage.

More powerful than your namby pamby laptops and tablets
  • Desktop at work, laptop at home - rarely iPad and almost never Smartphone (BB)

I would never have had CL users as style over substance people.
  • I'm the 1% blackberry, fcuk iphone, I want a keyboard I can take my agression out on.

    Best post ever.
  • interesting

    Very

Sent from my non specific Vic 20
  • As said above. I only used to use the desktop, on very rare occasions it would be the telephone, but now it is a fair percentage on the tablet (which is a Hudl) which is often convenient.

Does my ZX81 show up on there Barts? Still going strong and I will finish Jet Set Willy if it kills me...

Oh no you won't. I remember this was the game that had a serious glitch in it which meant you couldn't finish it. Oh my happy memories of the Spectrum when I used to think the graphics were cutting edge

  • Since I signed up (08?) I think 90% of my usage has been by iPhone.

I 'graze' briefly on CL whilst doing others things and make the odd comment but couldn't image sitting down for an hour long CL session on a desktop/laptop.
  • I am almost solely on my phone now, to the point where I had no idea what the 100% support banner looked like.
  • The digital revolution is now some twenty years in and whilst there is no doubt that all our lives have been changed by it, I think it is the extent to which we allow ourselves to be dominated by it that is the key point.

It is a given that we all need a computer of some kind these days, there is no way around that. But what sort of computer? And for what purpose? Do we really need to Tweet what we had for breakfast this morning? Using a computer is now necessary to monitor our bank account or find the best price for car insurance, but so much of what we do is ephemeral and the only reason we're doing it is because it's there (such as discussing niff-naff and trivia on this site..!!). If Twitter had never existed our lives would have been none the worse for that.

I think the use of tablets and smartphones is on the rise for no other reason than the fact that they are out there to be had, and they are heavily promoted and advertised. They become the next "must have" item for people who think they will somehow be left behind if they don't have one.

In my opinion, we reached the appropriate level of computer hardware necessary to function effectively in the internet age, with the laptop. It's portable, convenient, effective and ticks all the boxes to do what we need it to do. I have one and don't intend to "upgrade" to anything else.

Just for information, I own this laptop and a mobile phone that only makes calls and texts. It cannot take photos, access email or apps and it doesn't play crazy frog when it rings. It makes calls and texts. End of.

I don't have a Facebook or Twitter account and if I lived long enough, I would be quite happy to be the last human being on planet Earth without either. I wouldn't feel in the least bit deprived.

Technology is a wonderful servant but a rotten master and I feel sorry for smartphone junkies whose lives are dominated by something that is supposed to be the former but has become for many the latter. They would probably deny that they are subservient but just try taking their phone away from them. Good luck with that.

Me? I'll just pootle on in my own archaic, dinosaur type way. I do this because I enjoy it. I look in here when I feel like it and may not come back for days. Weeks even .

When it comes to internet usage I'm still in charge of what I do. I still call the shots. And I don't need the latest appliance to do it.

I agree Loony and spend far too much time looking at my phone, although with self-control they, and tablets, are amazing devices.

You can on a tablet do pretty much anything you need to, with more portability and quicker start-up than a laptop (Specialist computer programmes aside and maybe instances where formatting is better on a tradition device).

I poo-pooed the iPad when it came out. Who would use one when we have laptops?

Now our laptop is just used for photoshop, organising photo and music libraries and the odd website that the tablet does not like. So still used, but probably a couple of times per week at most.

With a family of three children five most of my internet usage is 'on the go' so these devices are ideal if you don't abuse them!
  • I'm assuming my Amstrad is lumped in under Desktops then.

I wish you'd have told me that sooner...
