Charlton players sent off.

As most people are aware it was extremely rare for a player to be sent off years ago.

The first Addick I saw sent off was Benny Fenton around 1950 and then Buck Ryan at West Ham following a skirmish with John Bond.

Willie Duff was sent off for putting Dave Hickson to sleep in a cup tie against Everton at the Valley.

Anyone know who was our first player sent off and if there are any official records of dismissals ?

I remember Harry Gregory being sent off. The best was Jim Ryan who right hooked one of Millwall's Brady brothers in a reserve game.

Remember the Willie Duff incident he just decked the guy took off his gloves and carried on walking off the pitch without bothering to wait for the ref to act.

Hales and Flanagan fighting each other at the Valley, one or both was sent off.

Also remember it well FA Cup 4th round Jan 1959 drew 2-2 lost the replay 1-4 aet. Hickson had been needling Willie all game especially at corners. Eventually Willie had had enough, waited his moment and as another corner came in late in the game, he let Hickson have it square on the jaw. No point hanging about to be told to go, so like a batsmen who knew he was out started walking back to the dressing room.

Didn't Andy Todd floor somebody at the Valley in the Prem and make the dreaded walk of shame?

Andy Todd and Graham Stuart got sent off I think, Todd was playing for Bolton. It was in the 2000 season when we went back up as Champs.

Also we had 2 players sent off at Burnley during the 1.7 defeat. Hales was one of those I think and I can remember him getting sent off for kicking a Sunderland player during a 1.2 home defeat in about 76-77. The game was on the Big Match the next day.

Had a tea break and had a quick look through Home and Away.

Got to 1929 and no sending offs and only three bookings so far.

It was a man's game then, jumpers for goalposts

So who was the first red card recipient after the return to the Valley?

Probably Killer when he came out before the Pompey game

Polly Kirsten, one of the young South Africans was sent off in a reserve match.
It caused quite a stir at the time and I don't think he played for the first team.

That list has evoked so many memories.

at first glance, it's looks like Killer Hales and Richard Rufus at 5 share the record.

Don't think any one in last ten years is any where near that.

Hales and Flanagan is the stand out. still shocked to this day.
Steve Brown on a stretcher and paper protest.
Danny Mills being provoked by ipswich fans(ex norwich)

Andy Todd who not only attacked deano but Phill Brown when he was at Bolton.
sent off for and against us, must of accumulated several Reds in his career?
  • Options
Nicky Johns stood out for me. Opened the door for Bob Bolder, who kept an Impressive clean sheet against Liverpool soon after I think.
  • Options
I thought killer traded blows with the Sunderland CB when he was sent off.And while the ref was sorting things out killer was on he way off the pitch and the ref had to call him back to send him off.

    Strangling Kermorgant.

    image

76 - Beattie arrives on the pitch
77 - Russell arrives on the pitch
    ---
84 - Russell gets red carded
85 - Beattie gets red carded

Quite obviously Yann thought the numbers needed leveling after Russell went off.

Funnily enough, two weeks later MK Dons arrived at The Valley and and had Gary MacKenzie sent off for doing similar - putting his arm around Kermorgants neck and pulling him in, looking as though he was going to headbutt him. All the while Yann confidently just looked towards the referree.. MacKenzie was sent off in the 42nd minute.

That man had a knack for rubbing people up the wrong way...

Killer never took any prisoners, his short fuse never helped his disciplinary record either. Had at least one early bath playing for the Hamsters as well.

    Hi Shirty
I notice that John Ryan is not on your lists.
I was at Upton Park when he was sent off in the fifties and not long after the 7-6 game in 57 he was sold to Newcastle.

That`s true and all in an era when red cards were rare. Things like tackling from behind and challenging the keeper were still allowed so it was actually quite difficult to get sent off.

    Hales 5 Rufus 5 : score draw.

I would think most of Killers were for fighting and Rufus' for fouls.

Killer's sendings off were probably all straight reds. Some of Rufus's would have been two yellows.
