  • Alnwick 6 Some brave saves but a bit lucky not to give away a second goal
    Wilson 5
    Morrison 6.5
Devite 6 a mixture of dozy and good
wiggins 6 Usual mixed bag. Nearly won a penalty
    Stewart 6 Typical winger
Cousins 7 Impressive. Great energy and skill.
Stephens 6.5 Classy but his mistake led to the goal
    Evina 5 Not very effective.
Kermorgant 7 Played well. Had a couple of strikes on goal.
Church 6 Missed his one on one but ran hard as always.

Sordell 7!!! Played very well in his cameo.
Green 8 Woke the team up with his skill and determination. More please Danny.
    Jackson n/a

Our crowd 10/10 sang non stop. Brilliant!
  • Alnwick 6
    Wilson 6
    Morrison 6
    Dervite 6
    Wiggins 6
    Stewart 5.5
    Cousins 6
    Stephens 6
    Evina 5.5
    Kermorgant 6
    Church 6

Sordell and Green impressed in their 20 minute spells
  • Alnwick - 6 - Could've possibly done better with the goal?
Wilson - 6 - Poor first half, but much better in the final 30.
Morrison - 6 - Did ok, few good tackles made.
Dervite - 5 - Lot of backing off of players, misplaced passes
Wiggins - 6 - Much better in the final 30, few chances where he blew it by shooting or taking it too far.
Stewart - 6 - Better on the left with Wiggins
Cousins - 7 - Played well, probably our best centre midfielder now.
Stephens - 6 - Bits of quality, but lost the ball a few times too.
Evina - 5 - Didn't link well with Wiggins, two lbs didn't work.
Yann - 6 - Played rubbish in the first 60, picked up a bit in the final 30, would've subbed him off instead of Church.
Church - 7 - Lots of running and good hold-up play. Should've won a pen, but then poor shot later.

Sordell - 7 - Quality when came on, need him on that form.
Green - 7 - Did very well when came on.
Jackson - 6 - Didn't notice him much when on.
  • Alnwick 6 couldn't do anything about the goal
    Wilson 5
Morrison 5 didn't seem to win many headers
Devite 6 seemed a bit reluctant to tackle on some occasions
    wiggins 6 improved first half
Stewart 6 improved when swapping wings
Cousins 7 made some important tackles
Stephens 6 at fault for goal but apart from that good
Evina 5 looked scared to run into open space
Kermorgant 6.5 getting back to his old self
Church 6 should have had a penalty, missed his other good chance

    Sordell n/a looked much improved
    Green n/a
    Jackson n/a

  • Alnwick - 6: didn't think he had much chance with the goal.
Wilson - 6: ok but nothing really going forward
Morrison - 6: struggled initially against their forwards but an easier second half as Reading fizzled out
Devite - 5.5: as above. A little clunky and slow at times
wiggins - 6.5: decent enough and got forward to good effect on occasions
Stewart - 5.5: squandered some very good crossing opportunities, although still carries an element of menace for the opposition
Cousins - 7: a good, sound performance. Always made himself available for the ball and made some great runs up and down the field (especially defensively)
Stephens - 5.5: an ok performance, although his concession of possession in a critical area led to their goal (although it might have helped if someone had come out to challenge Sharp)
Evina - 5: the experiment did not work (Harriott ?)
Kermorgant - 5.5: some nice touches but didn't do enough. He does not, in my view, have the pace or energy to play effectively in "the hole"
Church - 6: decent enough game but he is a poor finisher and will continue to cost us points
  • Alnwick - 6 Feel he could have done better with Sharp's goal. Spent a while hitting high balls to Stewart's head as well which was a bit counter-productive.

Wilson - 6 Grew into the game but positioning still suspect at times

Morrison - 6.5 Strong against Pogrebnyak who was playing Prem last year. Got dragged around with the gaps created by Lawrie, Stewart and Stephens mucking about but dealt with it well.

Dervite - 6 Strong but some dodgy touches

Wiggins - 7 Our best attacking threat in 2nd half. Smart enough to realise that we couldn't beat them in the air and tried to get to the byline. Wonder how good his shot would have been if the bloody ref had got out of the way.

Stewart - 6 Can't cross. Poor in the first half but linked up well with Wiggy in 2nd. Always has a good first touch.

Cousins - 7 Strong throughout. A couple of brilliant passes. He and Dale need to work on one plugging gaps when the other goes forward though.

Stephens - 5 One good backheel but kept getting caught on the turn and putting the defence under pressure. Overran the ball to lead to their goal.

Evina - 5 Didn't link up all that well or cover Wiggy as well as expected. Looked unfit.

Kermorgant - 5 Also looked unfit. Couldn't beat their men in the air but had a few good touches.

Church - 6 Probably should have had a pen. Ran hard.

Sordell - 7 Held the ball up, ran hard, got some attempts on goal. Excellent.
Green - 6.5 Great for ten mins, sleepy for the next ten
Jackson 6 - Used the ball better than Dale

Alnwick 6 Some dodgy decisions show why he has not cemented a place anywhere
Wilson 6.5 dealt some hospital passes from Morro & Stewart
Morrison 5.5 not good enough at this level. Mr Hoof
Devite 6.5 Given a tough time by Pogrebnyak but battled well
    Wiggins 6.5 Always an outlet
Stewart 5.5 poor crossing and rarely beat his man. Two late decent runs.
Cousins 7.5 Classy and even looks a threat on edge of box
Stephens 6.5 He & Cousins suffered from lack of movement ahead
Evina 6 Not a winger. Supported well as you'd expect
Kermorgant 7 We need to play to his feet more
Church 6 Ran around to little effect

Sordell 8 Looked like the striker we've been missing. Caused havoc.
Green 7 Benefitted from them being on the back foot
  • Alnwick 6 - needs to up distribution
Wilson 4.5 - v poor first half, better second
Morrison 6 - Solid but needs to work on distribution
Devite 6 - Battled but no stand out moments
Wiggins 6 - Crossing let him down until last 20 when he finally got to the line
    Stewart 5 - see Wilson
Cousins 6.5 - Composed but didn't shine as much as recently
Stephens 5 - Unfortunately off-day-Dale last night. What was he doing to give the ball away for the goal?
Evina 5 - Not match fit, but improved with time
Kermorgant 6 - still off his best
Church 6.5 - tried hard as usual but with little end result

Sordell 7 - Much better hold up play. Looked like he wanted it
Green 7 - Someone who could cross from the right, plus his long throws gave another outlet
Jacko 6 - Didn't quite click but solid

    Crowd
Royals - A bit more vocal than QPR, but predictable
Addicks - Similar to team; huffed and puffed first half, but outstanding second half and definitely spurred them on

Ref (when are we going to get one?)
Too far away to comment on the Church (non) penalty, but has there been a directive to stop play IMMEDIATELY we threaten the goal if a player is injured for any reason? There seems to have been a spate in recent games where the ref has stopped play for leg/ankle/hand/arse injuries that don't look serious.
  • Alnwick 7 Stood no chance with the goal.
Wilson 6 Good when going forward but still prone to being unreliable when defending.
    Morrison 7 Good performance.
Devite 7 Another good performance. Has the knack of being in the right place at the right time.
wiggins 6 Like Wilson, good at going forward but error-prone when defending.
Stewart 6 Fairly anonymous until we made the substitutions, then he suddenly came alive!
Cousins 7 Better display tonight, although still making stupid errors.
Stephens 6 As with last Saturday, some nice touches but not really making his mark on the game.
Evina 1 Absolutely useless and a complete waste of space. Didn't touch ball once in 2nd half!
Kermorgant 6 Some nice touches but seemed to be playing out of position. Again, improved after substitutions.
Church 7 effectively played up front on his own but gave a good performance.

Sordell 7 Why can't he play like this at The Valley. He was amazing!
Green 7 Made such a difference when he came on - we were a different side!
Jackson 6 May not have done too much, but he was an inspiration.

This was not a game of "2 halves" but one of "before" and "after" substitutions. Once we had got rid of the ineffective Evina (which was like playing with 10 men), we suddenly came alive. If the substitutions had been made earlier, I feel sure we would have got something out of this game.
  • Alnwick -7 done what he had to do.
    Wilson -6 poor distribution
    Morrison -6
    Devite 6- looked incredibly clumsy
wiggins 5- apart from one run late on was poor and made a lot of simple mistakes in possession.
Stewart 6- better after changing wings, just doesn't have the intestinal fortitude for the fight ahead.
Cousins 7- solid as ever, is developing into a consistent regular.
Stephens 6.5 - a lot of trying, but with so little movement ahead of him, was fighting an up hill battle.
Evina 5- lacking in football recently and this was clearly evident.
Kermorgant 5- played out of position, but just did not look interested.
Church 6- great effort as ever, but he could still be there and he wont have scored.

Sordell n/a - 8 looked surprisingly sharp, held ball up well and turned defenders. Has to start on Saturday for me.
Green n/a 7- done a wingers job, ran at full back, get to by line and cross ball. simple.
Jackson n/a 5- anonymous after coming on.

fans 10/10- fantastic, especially second half, non stop singing. Inspired the players to push on, unfortunately, it cant make them better players.
  • For those at the Maj tonight your marks out of ten please:

Alnwick - 5.5 - Solid enough from a shot stopping perspective, but his distribution was poor, maybe this was indicative our options or lack of but I lost count of the amount of times he was hooking it out towards the heads of Evina and Stewart, no great shock the ball wasnt sticking

Wilson 5.5 - Looked shaky, especially in possession, seemed to improve when Green came on and improved like the rest of the team for the last 20mins

    Morrison 6 - Steady enough

Devite 5.5 - Solid enough defensively, casual in possession, sometimes it works and looks great, sometimes it just doesn't

wiggins 6 - Sound enough defensively, with one great interception in the second half, just wished his delivery in and around the box was of a better quality, to many times hitting the first man when in good positions

Stewart 6 - As someone suggested above a wingers performance, woeful in the first half, last 25 minutes when switched the left seemed to be able to take players on both inside and outside, committed defenders and linked up with Wiggins, fell foul to the same problem though lack of end product

Cousins 6.5 - Felt for him in the first half, a couple of occasions he was getting caught out on the ball, but when you look at it, your always going to get caught out with the lack of movement and options in around. Always composed and some good defensive covering second half as we attacked

Stephens 5.5 - Back to he's patchy best, caught out far to many times, seemed slow to release the ball and force the issue. Has really improved in the last two months but wasnt at that standard last night

Evina 5.5 - Tough night for him, seemed to have the ball played at his head for the majority of his time on the pitch, was industrious if not overly effective going forward.

Kermorgant 5.5 - Seems a little disillusioned, not sure the tucking in role works, he was getting ball to feet on enough occasions and there was great releases out the wide areas coming from him, but he cut a frustrated and more strangely disinterested figure for large parts of the game, seemed to misjudge the flight of the ball, and not his imperious self.

Church 6 - Looks composed in possession, obvious work ethic, things could of gone the other way on another night, unlucky to come off

Sordell n/a 7 - Looked bright, purposeful even, which was clearly lacking up till the change, looked composed in possession and looked to get into good areas in the box.

Green n/a 7 - From the resulting throw in after all three subs came on , all three were involved in closing down and that ball and winning back possession, they looked fired up, Green offered decent delivery at times, set plays and throw ins' and generally looked a threat

Jackson n/ 7 - Seemed to get low marks from what I've read, I thought he was as key as Sordell and Green in the improved final 20, much more urgency both in possession and out of possession, put himself in the box and more than played his part.

Thought the support was superb. Since I was young was ringing out for a good 15 minutes towards the end, Reading fans generally gave up
  • Lots are marking Stephens down for getting caught in possession, but nobody showed for him, and either we want people to hoof it out of our half or we don't. If the defence would push out as soon as we get possession, the midfield would have more passing options. In a moment of rare silence last night I hollered "get out!" for one such instance; Dervite heard, and they did so the next few sorties, but then reverted to type.

Alnwick 4 poor showing on a relatively quiet night beaten at his near post for their goal and allowed their next shot to bounce off him back into the danger area
Wilson 4 not overstretched defensively but his passing and crossing are just dreadful got away with pulling Pogrebnyak's shirt for a penalty - hurry back please Chris Solly
Morrison 5 first twenty minutes reading's forwards had the freedom of the Madejski his marking at set pieces is plain lazy and he evokes memories(nightmares) of Phil Chapple as an extra forward
Devite 6 first twenty minutes reading's forwards had the freedom of the Madejski after that a quiet night
Wiggins 7 one of few to make a positive contribution despite absence of any help from Evina or Stewart
Stewart 6 still not really getting stuck in but positive on occasion
Cousins 6 ran his legs off poor b"gger effectively playing on his own in the middle against decent oppo
Stephens 1 AWOL for his far too extended appearance should have got the hook after 30 - shameful giving the ball away leading to reading's goal a return to the workshy charlatan we all know and loath
Evina 1 contributed absolutely nothing reminding us all why he rarely ever gets to play
Kermorgant 7 worked his nuts off as always hamstrung by rotten service and shackled effectively by the much taller Gorks
Church 7 industrious and had our best chances

    Sordell 0 no words necessary
Green 6 busy and we were better with him but ultimately unproductive
Jackson 6 much better than the charlatan he replaced

Chris Powell 6 the changes were earlier than we usually see but Stephens should have been pulled much earlier, worrying that 2 games in a row he's pulled Church when we need goals - is SC carrying an injury? Experiment with Evina a failure and probably should have pulled that earlier too. Progress but slow...

The Travelling Faithful 9 relentless noise and support - far more effort expended than by a few in red...
  • Alnwick 6

    wiggins 6
    Stewart 6
    Cousins 6.5
    Stephens 5
    Evina 4

    Church 6

Sordell - For once he put a decent effort in and contributed
Green - His energy revitalised the team. Deserves a start with Stewart on the left
Jackson - The starting lineup missed his experience, especially in the first half and what has he done with his scoring boots?

Fans - 10. In the last 20 minutes they nearly won it for us.

My son went who I would say knows his football. He doesn't like Sordell, but came home with a different attitude saying he must start Saturday. Personally I don't think he has been given a chance as yet and would like to see him given a go.

Green n/a - Thought he was excellent when he came on and gave a real attacking force.
Jackson n/a - Seems a yard or two behind to me.

He was superb. He had a great first touch last night and held the ball up, ran into space, played Green in often and nearly scored. I think he earned a start on Saturday but I fear he'll be like Green in that he'll make a strong cameo appearance and then revert to type when given a start. I have a lot more faith in Sordell than Green though.

Alnwick 6 - couldn't do much more with the goal, defenders backed off too much.
Wilson 5 - last few games hasn't been very good, we miss Solly.
Morrison 5.5 - first half was all over the place, not close enough to their players and when he was he got booked.
Dervite 5.5 - again backed off too much but carries us out of defence well sometimes.
Wiggins 7 - second half done well going forward and had a couple of shots but needs to work on crossing still.
Stewart 6 - looked dangerous with Wiggins but ineffective before that.
Cousins 6.5 some good tackles and a lot of running, seems like it's only him and Church that move.
Stephens 5.5 - has been quality this year but did give the ball away for the goal, he's at his best when players are on the move and options on the ball, that doesn't happen nowhere near enough.
Evina 5 - lack of match time showed, not a left winger and it showed. Why no Harriott?
Kermorgant 6 - playing in the hole just doesn't seem to work. Clearly not fully fit and body language doesn't look the best. When Yann plays well, we get results.
Church 6.5 should have been awarded the penalty and had another good chance, movement is good but needs to work on finishing.

Sordell 7 - classy touches, held it up, got in behind and was unlucky not to score. Need more of that, he's a good player.
Green 7 - was key to changing the game for us, bright and direct. Only frustration is the shot at the very end, poor effort.
Jackson 6 - helped change the game, not on the ball masses but watch him individually and he's important when attacking.

People will remember us having a go at the end, but first half we were woeful. Inept at times. Should have had a penalty which would have changed the game, but lack of movement and options on the ball is worrying and makes us so predictable and one dimensional. That must improve.

Desperately need a striker who can finish the small amount of proper chances we do create but that won't happen with this current board/owners.

Powell was bold with the changes but had to be done, looked dejected on the touch line at the end. Appreciated us fans as we were class last night.
